Bobby Fischer was renowned for his opening preparation and made numerous contributions to chess opening theory. He was one of the foremost experts on the Ruy Lopez. The Ruy Lopez remains the most commonly used amongst the open games in master play. Due to the difficulty for Black in achieving equality, a common nickname for the opening is "The Spanish Torture".

Bobby Fischer was the very last lone "World Beater". After Bobby every World Champion has had massive computer and staffing resources. Bobby did all the original thinking and development of openings like the Sicilian Naijdorf singlehandedly. Brilliance beyond belief!

Yes -- actually useful analysis. Most of us mere mortals who watch this kind of thing are A-B-C level players. Many big chess channels are either lazy (Agad) or rushed (Gotham) with game review.

Spassky was old here. (first game) I still say Fischer should have played Botvinnik in Iceland and defended his world title against Karpov if he even beat Botvinnik. We have know way of knowing whether Fischer is really the 3rd best player behind Carlsen and Kasparov because he didn't play Karpov. As genius as he was at chess...we don't know where to put him in the rankings.

I forget what game. But I took a lesson an it was based on one of his games. And it really broke down the sort of wall my mind had on the game. Elo went up about 20% just on studying one of his games. He has the most amazing forced mate in history. Its a shame he went nuts.
