Here in Texas about 36 miles South East of the Galveston coast my brother hooked into a much large similar fish we call a King Mackerel. When he was holding it up for a photo it flopped and it's sharp teeth unzipped his lower leg from just below his knee to slightly above his ankle. With the assistance of a roll of Duck Tape and a 2.5 hour rough sea ride back to shore he was delivered to the Galveston UTMB Trauma Center to get it stitched back up.

We have king mackerel too. They’re VERY similar. One has a higher mercury content which I thiiink is the king mackerel
@cameronsharlen-robertson10682 жыл бұрын
@@ThorbjornHale Just a couple species people mix up. kingfish or king mackerel isn't a spanish. Kingfish/King Mackerel(Scomberomorus Cavalla) vs. Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus Commerson). Spanish are a wider bodied, bigger growing species. African Pompano/(or what we call a) Pennant Fish(Alectis ciliaris) vs. Diamond Trevally (Alectis Indica) BlackFin Tuna(Thunnus atlanticus) vs. Longtail/Northern BlueFin Tuna(Thunnus tonggol). Longtail are a longer/bigger species. Jack Crevalle(Caranx hippos) vs. Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis). Just an all round different fish. A really big mix up is also the "Bonito' or False Albacore (Euthynnus alletteratus) and Mack/Mackerel Tuna(Euthynnus affinis), which are basically the same apart from location and some key features

Sammy when you are using live bait is the boat in gear? How fast are you going so you don't kill the baits and they swim properly? Great show bro, as always
@smithysfishing2 жыл бұрын
Dead slow idle in gear with outboards. Aim for about 2knots. Sometimes you are in a bit of current and it is a struggle to go into it. Might have to pump the speed up but it can trash yakkas. Slimies will handle a bit more speed. The other week here at the Sunny Coast, we pulled them in, ran to the bottom of the reef and came back downsea/down current each time as it was too hard to go back into the wind and current.

You say Spanish mackerel and I say you can have at it, but your Spanish mackerel are not the same as Atlantic Spanish mackerel I see. Atlantic Spanish mackerel are extremely strong fishy tasting. I’d love to make a trip for a catch and grill for Gold Coast Spanish mackerel some year. They seem to be close to King mackerel by sight, which are wonderful on the grill.
@smithysfishing2 жыл бұрын
There is a guy in the comments with the latin names. Your Atlantic king mackerel is very close to this Indo-Pacific narrow barred mackerel. I like them to eat, lots of people do, but then I have mates who don't like them and will only eat demersal reef fish. Lots of people have different taste buds. We have a lesser mackerel, a spotted mackerel which Sammy has done some episodes on that I reckon it tastes a bit fishier, mostly as they run to colder water on small anchovy style bait, on the return journey when they come back from the cold water on oilier bait fish, they put on a lot of weight quick and have big bodies and small heads and I reckon they taste magnificent, the same as these narrow barred Spanish mackerel.
