In my opinion, Vaporwave transformed from a genre into a super-genre where every type, from classic to Future Funk and VHS Pop, to the new Barber Beats genre are covered under the umbrella of Vaporwave. Good to see that it's still going.

This was super informative for me. I actually discovered vaporwave in 2020 shortly after the pandemic began and knew nothing about it, I just liked how it sounded. I loved how it was stimulating and relaxing at the same time; it was the perfect background music for drawing and doing homework. Honestly I didn't even realize a lot of it was made from samples at first 😅 It's been so cool discovering more of it and its subgenres through your channel, and now learning more about its history and where it's headed. Thanks!

Thanks a million, mate. It seems the pandemic was a gateway for a lot of new fans, a bright spot in a pretty gnarly moment in history. Funny enough, I first listened to vaporwave in 2016 while doing art-small world! Thanks for watching! 🩵

Absolutely loved this video. Just wanted to say, there's been original composition Vaporwave from the early days (and even proto-vapor). Fatima Al Qadiri's "genre specific xperience" and James Ferraro's "Farside Virtual". Later people like Vektroid, Golden Living Room, Skeleton Lipstick, and a few others did original compositions too. There was an ironic-hipster joke that it's "slowed down 80s tunes" around 2014 onwards, but I think that joke got taken hyper literally, and for some people it's meant that Vaporwave is a synonym for slowed & reverbed (and memes). To my eyes and ears, it's always been way broader than that. It's an interesting rabbit hole. For me it's an online appropriation art movement, that has some eerie parallels to The Situationist, Ad Busters/ Culture Jamming, some Feminist /LGBT punk, and even to Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, Jeff Knoons (not a fan of Koons but the similarities are undeniable) visual arts people. But it's references are much more modern and unlike what came before, the online component makes it different, and it seems a lot more audiovisual than most music genres. Major musical influences I pick up on are Wendy Carlos, John Oswald, Negativland, DJ Screw, Boards of Canada, and Burial (more for the UK crowd). Really glad a channel like this exists, and happy travels! 😁

Thank you for reminding me of James Ferraro-I totally forgot about Farside Virtual. (D'oh!) I'll have to make up for it in a follow-up video in the future. He was a big influence in the "virtual utopian" branch of Vaporwave. I never heard of Fatima Al Qadiri, so I'll have to check that out for sure. It seems the origins of vapor stretch back pretty far! Good catch on the Andy EWarhol, post-modern roots, vaporwave feels like the sonic/musical equivalent, or at least it was in the beginning. Also, yeah, not a huge Jeff Koons fan over here, either 😄 Happy travels to you, fellow voyager!

I love your channels and this is an excellent video. I agree with your points about vocal tracks but I think we should separate vocal vaporwave from non-vocal because I personally will always prefer vaporwave with no vocals or very little vocals that are distorted. It’s just personal taste. I prefer the mysterious sound. ❤

Hey, this is c r y s t a l 日本. I'm actually trying to change up my sound, so maybe my next album will be all originals. I can't sing with shit, though, so I'll have to hire someone for that.
