Aaron Woods The Red-White belt has a ceremonial status in Judo. It denotes a senior teacher position. It is considered good manners not to ask a red white belt to randori or uchi komi. Taking Tori's role with a black belt is likewise odd. If both used their red-white belts this would be less odd. Edit: Corrected the belt colour of Tori.

hmm.. is it just done on the colour belt they are wearing? Because sampson is an 8th dan meaning he may be higher than uke.

Aaron Woods 6th-8th dan in Judo can wear either red-white or black belts. When using the black belt, they are treated with the same respect any other high level belt. When they use the red-white belt there is in addition a certain level of ”immunity” assumed. That is why the belt choises in this video look odd to me.

yeah, it would just be because they filmed one of Sampson's Junior lessons and uke was probably just like "Your dojo, your lesson, do what you gotta do." Or maybe he was showing respect to a higher grade (If sampson is the higher grade.) It also seems like a bit of a technicality, and one that would likely be dropped if both Judokas are familiar with each other's skill level.
