my last time watching someone do body work on youtube was the restorations Harry's Garage did on both a Jaguar XJ12 Coupe and a Lancia Fulvia Zagato, and the body work on those cars was magical. Both of those shops had guys that were artists, no other way to put it. Their work was the best that could be done and it was a great time to watch it. This was atrocious cancer but god damn man, you pulled it off. That fiberglass filler and the replacement panels did work but you still got the car looking damn good considering how rough it was and how much you replaced. All with no clue what you were doing or even a slightly healthy understanding of how much was involved in stuff like this. Bodywork scares the hell out of me personally so huge props. And props to whoever does your video production, camera work and editing is slick

Amazing work. I'm surprised your wire-welder was able to span those gaps. Mine usually burns-thru on a butt-weld, so I lap the metal, but just have the cheap Harbor Freight non-gas flux-wire welded. My two W123's have no rust since lived life in CA, though some crash damage. I did have to weld new metal at the same rear wheel arches in my 1965 Dodge Dart, due to rust-thru at an accident repair. It appears they put the Bondo right on bare metal, as most shops do, which allowed corrosion. I use self-etching primer before Bondo, but various opinions. A dated repair since had drill holes for a puller, rather than the welded studs used today. What fiberglass filler did you use? It appears to allow a long working time compared to Bondo Glass which allows

@y4nnickschmitt3 жыл бұрын
I really hope you get lucky with this. Love your attitude and work ethic. BUT I would never put filler on bare metal. Always get some sort of primer on first. Seal up the metal from the air and moisture. Filling on bare metal or even rusty material usually bites you. ✌Cheers.
@williamgrissom90222 жыл бұрын
I too spray the bare metal with self-etching primer before filler, but most shops don't. Notice that he uses weld-thru primer before welding, which helps on inaccessible areas (should still try to paint later). You can buy at welding shops or any high-zinc spray like Rustoleum's Galvanized Metal spray paint.

Well Sam you are definitely fighting cancer on that car. I just started watching this video and stopped to jump into the comments. Yes, you know now you bit off more than you can chew ……. But fair play to you for giving it a shot. If I had gotten to see what you are up to before you got to this stage I would have strongly suggested to you to do the following: Either ask for help from a professional welder here on your channel or put an add on something like Craigslist for a welder for a day. There are welders out there who are often willing to work on a day rate. There is no shame in reaching out for some help on a project like this. If you got someone with welding experience they could either do the welding for you or at least help you and teach you a few tricks on what to do. This is by no means meant to be critical of what you are doing……. Just hate to see you suffering through this part. When I saw you talking in a previous video about cutting out a section of the rear quarter I was wondering how you were going to accurately cut the new section. Then I saw you using the old panel as a template but that was not easy to do either. In any case I am going to jump back in and continue to watch the rest of this video and hope you make it to completion without losing your mind.

Not the best repair in the world but hey... Decent enough for a first try. Try to improve in the future, weld it all they way around and try to use as less as filler possible (which you will acheve by perfecting those welds). No hate! Respect the hard work done here, after all body repair ain't easy.
