I'm 33 and growing up I had to keep being gay from my peers growing up. I turned 18 in 2007 as Prop 8 was escalating. I came out to very few people at 17 but as Bi so I only felt half as bad or half as judged. This is in Utah. A friend and co-worker and classmate of my older sister helped me finally see myself. I gave up religion and fought Prop 8 with him in those days. Now my 15 year old straight nephew has several queer friends and a trans girl in his circle. I never experienced that in my school years and am very proud of him and his friends who get to live their best lives.

And even worse gave them away without them knowing who their real parents were or put them in a horrible place for undesirables like they did in Germany in WW 2. If they took them while they were still small the way their warped mind works is that the kids will forget where they came from and that Dave and his husband were their parents. Because they actually did that to many kids, put them with a barren German family even though they had their own biological parents that they had forgotten because they were taken so young. It was the most gut wrenching thing to witness and when the kids became adults and found they were lied to, it screwed them all up. They were sad and depressed and resentful people, understandably. I just think that the genuine disconnect between Dave Rubin’s associations with conservatives and his own conflicting personal lifestyle is downright sad to witness. I mean, Dave is rich so he can probably go home to his mansion with his husband without a care in the world, but it’s a lonely and isolating place when all your friends are literal social conservatives that are either explicitly celebrating the end of same-sex marriage or using the “state’s rights” federalism argument to weasel out from outright condemning Dave. I know the right thinks having these self hating spokesmen like Rubin, Owens, Blair helps their white cis audience feel like their positions are not straight up hateful.. but watching ACB vote to strip her own bodily autonomy away, Blair defend blocking trans healthcare, Rubin threaten his babies before they are even born may be an eye opener for people in each community that can see what they look like to the world, maybe people will start to consider their own best interests when voting. Meeting parents at the beginning of the schoolyear was something I went through many times as a teacher. I remember meeting the parents of one delightful student. She was having a great year so far. First I met her mother, then her “other mother” introduced herself. I didn’t act stunned and my friendly nature was unchanged. I never had a problem with them, nor their daughter. Another time the parents told me privately that their daughter regards herself as a boy. I told them it wouldn’t be a problem as I try to treat all the girls as if they were boys. That means lots of things. Never expect less of them especially in math. I don’t go over the top when a girl calls out a comment or squirms like a boy. I’ll commend a student for taking an academic risk or trying something without explicit permission. Teachers don’t try to teach genders differently and often aren’t conscious of it when they do. When girls act like girls in the classroom, what does that really mean? They’ve been acculturated to be quiet, orderly, deferential. Coming through my third grade class for gifted gave these girls a year off from those expectations. When I run into parents of former students, parents tell me fondly that their kids remember that year fondly. Our wooden top factory was a great example of a hands on, dynamic setting. I’d use the roar of my sander and pretend not to hear an Asian girl’s question. Louder and louder she would get, like Eratosthenes roaring the surf with a mouth full of pebbles. Suddenly I’d cut the power and she’d be screaming her question as the rest of the class fell silent because Lili is yelling in the classroom and they’ve never seen or heard that. “You don’t have to yell I’d say. And we would all have a good laugh, especially Lili.

There's two factors working hand in hand to make this happen. First, Rubin is not smart. Second, and more importantly, fundamentalists don't think of themselves as hateful. They believe in an eldritch entity who will torture you the crime of birth (original sin), but that's just reason for them to try and SAVE you. Now, let's not mince words, a lot of that love is fake when you scratch it. But because Rubin isn't that smart, it's easy for him to fall for the lovey dovey act. Furthermore, since he hangs out with Jordan Peterson so much and isn't seen with his husband that much, it is easy for fundies to fantasize about Rubin getting "saved". Finding out that he was planning to have a kid was the ultimate reality check for them. They.... didn't handle it well.

So, I’m gonna be the person that says, maybe Dave is having a change of heart after years of looking into this, understanding data, and acknowledging the undeniable benefits of a nuclear family. I’ll use fitness health as an example: You can live a good amount of time as an obese person, and you can live a good amount of time as a fit person. It's worth noting that a non-zero portion of his audience are fascists or fascy adjacent, and they view gay people as degenerate and damaging to the fabric of their preferred society. Sometimes they appeal to a supposed religious reason, sometimes they don't. He is useful to them so they tolerate it so long as he is okay with homophobia and doesn't flaunt that identity except when it helps them.
