As a kid in Southampton I remember these, particularly running between the old and new docks past the Royal Pier. I ordered one in BR green as soon as Model Rail announced them and when it eventually arrived ran it happily for a couple of years before I switched gauge to N. It now lives in happy retirement with a lot of other locos and stock that remind me of my childhood in display cases in front of my desk. As someone else mentions, it would be great to have this in N.

Baldwin Locomotive company was no stranger to exporting their locomotives to the UK and Europe. The Lynton and Barnstaple had their locomotive Lyn, Narrow gauge 10-12 locomotives and the USA tanks. During WW1 Baldwin locomotives worked narrow gauge railways behind the front lines, moving anything and everything. I've got one of these tanks and it's such a fun addition to my collection.

Great video. Received mine today. Got it in the British Railways livery. Came with all accessories, and runs like a dream. Super happy with this; especially as it's my first Bachmann locomotive. Only had Hornby until now.

For the history buffs. LMR means the Longmore Military Railway. The establishment also ran a massive 2 ft gauge railway, a lot of stock has now been preserved. For film buffs, the railway was used for the railway sections of the film " The Great ST Trinions train robbery"

One of these has been cast as “Thomas”, which is quite powerful and can handle a train of 4 to 6 American cars. The US Army Transportation Corps ran a few Ft. Eustis, Virginia during open house events and they were fun to watch in action, moving rakes of American, European and “wagons” from Turkey, Italy and Iran.

The USATC S100 had a profound impact on my childhood in a surprising way: When I was a child, I had a toy railway called the Big Big Train, made by Rovex Tri-ang in the UK. Sold internationally, several of the vehicles were reasonable albeit simplified models of British trains, in O gauge, battery operated, running on red (!) plastic tracks. Relevant here is the RV.262 which was a simplified (mainly, the valve gear was inside rather than outside) S100. I always thought it a bit of a strange choice, given that a lot of the other models were British, but I'm guessing the reason was that S100s ended up all over Europe, while at the same time the locomotive retained its distinctive American appearance, so it was a prototype which would conceptually appeal to a wide international audience. The Big Big Train eventually failed for other reasons, but I think it had a large impact on young train enthusiasts born in the 1960s.

It's a great looking model, and a good review. The original Frank S Ross on the LMR was NOT fitted with brake pipes etc, there's a picture on the web if you search. So the model should not have these if it's going to be authentic. These were designed as shunting engines to move unfitted stock around the yard so no purpose in fitting vacuum or air brakes or steam heat. That engine was scrapped in 1958, having been hardly used since new. The current engine painted as Frank S Ross in LMR livery on the Kent and East Sussex Railway was actually SR 30070 which was never at the LMR. It went from shunting at Southampton to Departmental Stock at Ashford, then for scrap but got diverted to the KESR where it laid unused for half a century until restored about 2016. It's a fine looking engine, and can storm up the steep Tenterden Bank with 5 Mk.1's and still have steam to spare, making a fine noise! Worth going to see. It has a different coal bunker (up to roof top level) and detail differences to the cab, as well as brake pipes front and rear. There are probably many other small differences because it was built by Vulcan, whereas the original Frank S Ross was built by Davenport. Here's a fun fact; the only reason we have no less than 4 of these preserved, from the original class of 15 bought by the SR, is because of a design fault. The bearing area in the axle-boxes is a bit too small, they are ok for running around a yard but if you take one on a long trip at speed, the 'boxes overheat. When BR decided to scrap the last 4 from Ashford departmental stock, they started on the trip to Woodham's at Barry but only got as far as Tonbridge before they ran hot boxes so they were dumped in the yard there. They remained forgotten there for about 6 months, and whilst there came to the attention of preservationists, and all four got bought. How lucky is that? Without that design fault, we would not have any left. I think they are fine engines, I got to work maintaining the Bluebell's one many years ago and also got to drive one of the Yugoslavian copies, they have plenty of pulling power but due to the short wheelbase (a foot shorter than an Austerity tank) they have an odd "waddling" motion at speed on straight track. Hope this helps. Marion

I've always loved the USATC S100 and S160s. They remind me of the great camaraderie between the US and the UK. When the UKs rail network was in tatters, the US sent their best locomotive manufacturers to work: to keep the railways of Britain running. A moving example of the great relationship between the US and the UK. I hope you'll be buying the S160 that Rapido is creating, Sam.

Just to correct you, the Bachmann model is indeed correct for the real engine. LMR Number 300 was scrapped in the 1960s. The image you showed was actually Kent and East Sussex Railway USA Tank Number 30070 which was a southern example that got steam heat and Vacumn brakes which in 2017 was repainted in the same paint scheme as Number 300.

Hurrah on more of those tank engines being manufactured and sold (other decal versions included), especially the fact that those are often quite hard to find and buy depending on their availability! 😃 As I've said years ago, not only the main basis of Rosie from Thomas And Friends, but also alongside the Class E2 (extended side tanks version), one of my top favorite steam locos. Oh and not to mention, almost reminded me of Puffa and the goods engine/Little Owl from Tugs due to its design, mostly by the side tanks, domes and front buffer beam.

Hi Sam, a great video as usual, I have always been interested in 0-6-0T with the outside valve gear including the USA tanks. I built an ‘O’ gauge one from a brass kit, black with British Railways in yellow on the side tanks. I also believe that the WR 1500XX was the British version of the USA S100 class. I usually acquire a OO version of my O gauge but I was not impressed with this version when it was first released. I did buy the OO Rapido 1500XX that you reviewed some time ago, my one was a great model with DCC on board.

Hi Sam. It is very probable that the front end pipes were retrofitted - quite possibly during its life in preservation - in order to enable it to haul coaching stock. Such paraphernalia would not have been needed to marshall unfitted stock at the docks etc. The lack of a running plate was copied by the GWR-designed class 15xx, with the sticking out smokebox reminiscent of the GWR class 94. VG review, Sam.

Nice tank engine you got there. I've found a cheap and good quality way to buying N Gauge items. I've bought an N Gauge analogue track controller, complete with mains plug and clip, and 4 pieces of 2nd radius double curve track from ebay, plus 4 N Gauge straight track pieces and another 4 2nd radius double curves. Add the 4 straight pieces of N Gauge track I already have, and I'll have a proper oval of operational track. Of course, I'll have to save up more money to buy an N Gauge steamy that runs well. Flying Scotsman is no good because she's static. I've wholly committed myself to this.

Great job on continuing to keep up the improved focus on detail. I agree that etched nameplates should nowadays just be a standard at this point. Also, while most locos in Britain never had white wall tyres, Flying Scotsman, all of the Coronation and West Riding Limited A4s, and some others had polished tyres that sure do look white in a lot of photos (Railway Wonders of the World have a great photo of A4 Dominion of Canada with polished steel trim)! @@1471SirFrederickBanbury With diesels they do tend to get quite dirty pretty quickly so sometimes you won’t see the white rims plus it wasn’t every 37 that had them, the bachmann 37 that I have is 37430 Cwmbran and on a couple of pictures of that you can see the white rims on it, with diesels white rims on the wheels was mainly an embellishment applied by the depot that the locomotive was allocated to and it was to show that they took pride in their locomotive fleet, for example the 47 by bachmann that I have is 47375 Tinsley Traction Depot Quality Approved which in real life was allocated to Tinsley and they were quite well known for taking pride in its locomotive fleet, some depots while they did take pride in their locomotives they didn’t put embellishments on their locomotives, if your looking for a diesel that has white rims and isn’t dirty take a look at some photos of 55002 when it was running in the 80s in it’s two tone green Another thing if your looking for some diesels with white wheel rims is look at depot open day photos, many diesels would have been tarted up for events like that.

A few points….. The model represents the loco as on the LMR in the 1950s - not the preserved version (which is in fact not the original LMR loco! The original got scrapped and the preserved one is actually a Southern Railway example repainted and renumbered / named after the scraped loco). The ‘standard’ version of the USA tank lacked any form of brakes or steam heat - as a shunting engine designed for yard work neither of these things were required and as such should not be present on a model of the ‘real’ 300 The ‘boards’ which are shown to be fitted to the smoke box area in the instruction manual are another Southern Railway modification (done following complaints that there was nowhere for shed staff to stand to shovel ash out of the smoke box due to the short wheelbase but large boiler) and were not fitted to other examples of the class.

Oh geez, I can't help but notice the lamp iron on the right front of the front buffer beam is like....bent horribly inwards. Also there's noticeable rust on the rear cab handrail on the port side, and the rear cab windows are horribly painted on the inside of the cab, where the blue paint bleeds heavily over the off-white interior. I'm surprised you didn't notice that! Other than that looks like a pretty decent model.

Definitely not worth comparing the model to SR variant 30070 when it was painted up as this loco a few years back by the KESR. Although they did a fantastic job, I don’t think they intended to authentically replicate the details of the LMR version. Definitely worth checking a period picture of the LMR loco itself to see whether it had vacuum brakes, etc

I have always been in a yes/no/I don't know position about buying her. I love this kind of engine, but you were not really enthusiastic when you made a review of this model some time ago (or maybe I'm confusing with the Rivarossi one ?). On the overall aspect, there is some let down, I agree. I am more interested by the BR black with sunshine-SR like BR name on her, so, some of your comments does not apply for my chosen version. Well...For me, the dynamic qualities will make the difference. Correct mechanism, easy to open, let down by a three pole motor and no flywheel, seems to be acceptably geared (a little too fast for my taste, but not critical), but the very slow speed is poor. Good torque by the way. And runs fine. Well, for me, it's a buy. Sole criticism for me, the price. Limited at GBP 100, that would be allright.

In defense of Bachmann in this case remember that these were produced for a specific customer (Model Rail Magazine), so the design and features may have been done to the specifications of Model Rail Magazine, as opposed to what Bachmann may have produced had they been selling them to other retailers.

I've heard it said that a 3 pole motor has more torque than a 5 pole, if true this would make it a logical choice for a shunting locomotive. - Perhaps time to do a video to prove/dis-prove this theory?

As an American, I don't really consider the S100 to be a exceptionally American design, especially when compared to the other USATC classes sent to Britain during World War Two. Like it looks more at home on European tracks than even the S160, the class with the farthest reach of any American steam locomotive design in general. Still a good video, I might have to try to pick one up in future, I do so love the S100 for its style.
