Hi Sam, please don't get this confused with the Lima 92. Both Lima and Hornby released the 92 at the same time and when Hornby bought Lima their 92 was not re released, the Hornby version prevailed. The Lima version had a detail pack including brake pipes Horns and roof details. Also you had a choice of tension lock or a buffer beam skirt in the kit. It didn't have lights but it has 2 better pantographs. If you wish to do a video comparing the 2. I would be happy to loan you my Lima 92 for you to review and compare just get in touch with me.

Very interesting. I didn't know there were two separate models. I have one of each, and the Lima body is nicer but the Hornby underframe is more correct, though lacking sand pipes which are actually on the Lima model. As I write this, the Accurascale model is out, but there are reports of motor failures and unreliability, so what does one do? A re-wheeled and re-motored Lima seems a good choice to me.

Very nice models had a few in my time ended up selling my L class and definitely big regrets there only issue is shipping on top of auscisions updated prices the t class is around $334aud the shipping would be quite expensive from here to England. Powerline and austrains are other good mentions along with Southern rail models.

Really looking forward to a comparison video between this and the Accurascale Class 92 - also I'd really like to see you compare the new tooled Hornby HAA MGR coal hoppers with the newly released Accurascale ones - they are priced very similarly with the Hornby ones being the slightly more expensive so really interested to see how they stack up next to each other!! Thanks Sam 👍🏻

A review I jumped on as soon as I saw it. The 92 is definitely my favourite electric and potentially my favourite loco full stop. Watching this brought home just how much the 00 world needs the Accurascale version, there is no way this loco should be represented in 00 by this toy! £100 was dubious until I saw the insides / mechanism, then it is awful! Back in 1995 when Lima did their normal trick of getting the model out almost before the real thing, it’s fine. Now it’s a car boot find with a slightly updated livery! That might sound harsh but I do love the real thing and all three of my N gauge versions are special. Great review as always though.
@SamsTrains

Oh awesome! And yes the Accurascale one is badly needed. 1995 was a different story - I'm sure this would've been awesome then... but now, you'd expect better unless you're a beginner or a kid ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

lol - IIRC Len Vass in Railway Modeller would try and create a model of a new locomotive as soon as people knew what it would look like. At the time I loved his class 60 he built out of plasticard. (slightly off topic)

It’s worth mentioning that Accurascale are tooling up for a Class 92. In fact 92023 Ravell is available to preorder at Rails of Sheffield for £189. Whilst I appreciate that’s double the price of this Hornby release of Limas old tooling; it’s probably twice the locomotive too. If you can’t justify the Accurascale; buy the old Lima or Hornby re-release second hand. But to fork out £92 for this - poor value for money. I feel Hornby is guilty of ripping off the customer with less than premium money to spend with this locomotive. Thank you once again Sam, for spending the money so I don’t have to!!

I have a number of these and a couple of Accurascale 92s on order. The "Limby" 92's are simple, robust and easy to repair if necessary. I bet the Accuascale locos will have a lot of fragile detail but will overall be of a higher decorative quality. If they have a good mechanism they will be great but the cost difference is simply huge. So a "Limby" 92 may be a good choice for those on a budget and/or for those who like to work on improving their locos. I agree its a Railroad model at heart though the directional lights take it a step above.
@Damocles178

Ah yes I remember Hornbys overhead pick up system. As time went on I think they moved away from that since there isn't really anything that can pick up overhead these days. I'm pretty sure earlier versions of this Class 92 in the main range (as well as a few other electric locos) would have had Metal Pantographs when that system was more popular, though the trainset versions only had plastic pantographs if I remember right. However it's still shocking they write that when they don't pay any mind to that system now when nothing they have in recent memory is designed for it. It does look surprisingly decent after all this time. Would be interesting to see what it looks like versus the Accurascale Class 92. I imagine the Accurascale Class 92 would be superior overall but still impressive. Though one old Hornby model that really does surprise me after all this time is their original HST 125 models . The newer HSTs are better in performance and looks but surprisingly the original HST still holds out rather well in looks; especially if someone opted to add more detail.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point - you hardly see that any more do you? Cool idea actually, pity that's not much of an option these days! It is shocking... I mean it's a piece of paper... how difficult would it have been to just write a set of instructions for this loco?! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains I'm actually genuinely curious if Hornbys old 92 could get power overhead. Can't remember if it did or not. Hornby's old Class 90 definitely could get power overhead at one time. I think that was also true for the old 86 and the class 91 (Intercity 225); in the latter's case at least in the early days, doubt any re-releases of the old model in newer liveries would. Of course overtime Hornby has been known to modify tooling and features. Having looked at a recent video; one distinctive feature of this old system was a switch on top of the locos to change power modes.

Hi Sam, what an odd model! I recall seeing these around Clapham Jn in the 90s. Usually sneaking along under my train on a freight. As to your odd one out, has to be either the class 66 or the 73 which is of course diesel or electric :)

I think that with the soon arrival of Accurascale's super detail class 92, the only way that Hornby can make this profitable is to try and compete with them or relegate it to the railroad range. I dont think that Hornby sould compete as it is clear that Accurascale have put alot of effort into there new model and it would be cruel to take that away from them. P.S. Great an useful vid :)

Yes, I can see what Hornby are up to... another Hattons Genesis situation yet again. "Let's pump out a pile of rubbish before the other manufacturer issues their state of thr art super detailed unit so we can profit on the moment." For £65 I think it's really good vslue for what it is. For £100 I also think it's ok TBH. Not amazing but certainly not a rip off either. I'd be happy with it at either price. Actually makes a change to see a new Hornby loco at an affordable price point that's acceptable. It looked to improve the crawl a bit too, give it more use maybe more. Add some weathering and could be a lot more convincing. Certainly passes the 2FT rule IMO. Good vid.

@andrewdking
@andrewdking 2 жыл бұрын
Do not Scale is correct. I'm an engineering draughtsman by trade. The drawing image is to a scale on the box (i.e a true representation), we just don't know what scale. Because the image is small, it's not considered good engineering practice to place a rule across a feature, then using the few outline dimensions present as a scaling factor, work out the accurate size of said undimensioned feature. The method is ok though for a good estimate of actual size.

I picked up one of these about a year and a half ago for about mid 70 odd pounds. I do remember being pretty happy with it then, despite the age of the tooling and even getting it out for the first time in quite a spell, while watching this review, still pretty happy with it (even though I was surprised by how light it is). It's not an amazing model by any stretch, but for less than £80 it's decent. I do have one of the Accurascale 92s on pre order, so it'll be interesting to see what differences there are between them. @Sam’sTrains After watching many videos on model locomotive reviews and tons of research, I think, as a hobbyist, what-if paint schemes should be present in Hornby model locomotive products. The picture on the box is probably the prototype and hope for the future. I agree with you about the traction tires, but it's no Lima and although Lima did issue one, so did Hornby which wasn't as good and was $100 even back then, so the same price for the same exact model. Hornby is the UK's version of the US company Lionel and although I know both produced quality products in the past, neither one is a good purchase anymore because both have lost sight of their stated goal of delivering the best quality for the least money.

@@SamsTrains I think that's because most of us can see that Gladstone is actually pretty good. I think it would be a more fair comparison if you gave Gladstone a lower value for money, counting the time spent as a cost rather than a benefit, but even without the leg up from that, Gladstone really is on par with the low end of professional models, and any professional models that can even be fairly compared to someone's third (or was it fourth?) attempt at a homemade model are shamefully bad unless they are incredibly cheap.

It's not ex-lima, it's Hornby's own model updated. Because both Lima and Hornby made the 92s (they also both announced the 90s, but lima's never appeared). I have the margate 3-pole ringfield 92 in triple grey on my layout, it runs ok but of course it is noisy and the pickups are relatively poor and there are no tail lights and the light bleed from the forward lights acts as a cab light too. I don't think the lima ones had lights at all, but I could be wrong (the lima 67s had them, after all) because I don't have one yet (I'd love an EWS one). I've got accurascale's 92010 on order, although none of the mk5 packs to go with it (one pack of mk5as was enough for my wallet). That instruction booklet is a mess. 92s are dual voltage 25kV AC overhead and 750V DC 3rd rail, but not diesel electric, and most certainly not a Bo-Bo class 90 as per the diagrams inside the booklet. Not surprised about its performance at all. We shouldn't have to say "at least it isn't more expensive than it is".

He got it for £60 odd which is more reasonable but its both underwhelming and not really a fit in the railroad category, which was the point. I agree on the colour, it doesn't seem right, not only is it not gloss but they've used some kind of speckle or bad spray job so it isn't smooth enough to gloss off. As a miniature painter I really struggle to see how you guys can accept pre painted locos- and wished some came bare (if they do, let me know!) - or preferably disassembled too. 90% the fun for me is assembly and painting, a few transfers and you could sell the same loco and the end user could chose whichever decals they wanted. So in my situation I can buy a terribly modelled train, and paint it but with the poor detailing, OR I can get a very expensive one where everything is done for me to a reasonable standard, often with features hard to put in by hand, like thin long straight lines etc that would be a shame to destroy. If they sold me a kit box with the detail of the expensive at the price of the cheap, I'd be right in there. magnetise, put in full lighting, fully decorated, weathered, lovely.

Does the fact that the bogus bogie has conducting strips fitted to each of the 6 wheels mean that the installation of a motor would be possible?

You mentioned about dcc running may differ. I have an idea, as an improvement and since you have the tech there as an additional segment add a decoder and test. It would be nice to see a comparison. Any thoughts on making a more permanent layout thats not on carpet?

I have the Hornby class 33. Which is a modernized Lima engine like the class92. It looks like it has the same motor which is truly dreadful. No slow running and when you slow it down it just comes to a grinding immediate stop. Sometimes so sharply that it derails the motor bogie. The original Lima version that I also have I hate to say runs far better than the newer Hornby version.

This is definitely less of a model and more of a toy, but the price is more inline with what it is, which is a refreshing change for a Hornby release. Not a bargain, but about average price for what it is :). A shame Hornby did not include proper operating pantographs with this model, but I guess it couldn't be too good :) The gauging seems normal for Hornby Railroad, at least the earlier ones I have dealt with. Hornby seems to slightly undergauge them at the 14 to 14.2mm......... Thanks for another great review

If this model had no lights it would be a carbon copy of Hornby's class 66,a railroad loco in a railways box. Not bad for the price you paid. I purchased a Lima class 92 sometime ago and enjoyed fitting the roof parts which came in a large pack of extras. The pantographs are much more realistic and are made of metal.

Good and fair review, I agree a sloppy end product with clearly incorrect evaluation of its place in their product lines, incorrect packaging ( Hornby Railways Box), cover images, incorrect instructions etc, and definitely should be in Railroad range. However, any suggested comparison with the upcoming Accurascale model is like comparing chalk and cheese, on expected release the DCC ready version will be £189.99, only those with pre-orders will get the 'early bird' pre-Jan 2022 price. So on the current RRP that makes it almost 3 times what you paid and nearly double what Hornby's RRP for what is a Railroad (a basic model), and aside from the 'wrong' product category Hornby aren't trying to hide the fact it's an old model because as you pointed out its on the box. I am not a Hornby apologist, their price rises in comparison to others seems indefensible, but your great review of the recent 'upgrade' to the A1, even though not perfect, proves they are still capable of producing good models albeit not a new tooling. By the by, Auscision are great models, their HO scale models are sublime and prices competitive, their new 2022 release of a CLR Class diesel loco with DCC Loksound fitted, on pre-order, is $395 (GBP225). ...Drew
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Drew, yeah i agree. Yes of course the Accurascale 92 will be a completely different beast - but £189.99 is the price... they're still available to pre-order for that right now, and I've seen nothing to suggest they're increasing the price... so we're only talking around +£80-£90 on the Hornby... which I think sounds well worth it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I'm fairly sure the reason it isn't a Railroad model is because all the Railroad models have a Railways range counterpart whereas the 92 (and also the 66) don't. Still, it would suit the Railroad range much better.

Hey Sam, another example of a railways model that should be railroad. I think the issue with some of these is that when the system was introduced these were still considered ok. I think this loco is fair for £80. If I was a younger modeller I’d be happy with this and there is probably still a market for it. My primary grip with this loco is the shade of blue. It’s not far from BR blue. If you look at the real thing (or accurascale) you’ll realise how appalling Hornby’s attempt is. Not that anyone will but you simply can’t run this with accurascale mark 5’s. Suffice to say I am very much looking forward to my accurascale 92 in sleeper teal with its motorised pantographs. The instructions look like they were made for the old class 90.

Following your review I bought a fairly recent but secondhand Class 92 on Ebay for £30 plus postage. The main issue is that its slow speed running (up to about half speed) is rather poor in one direction. It seems to hesitate once every revolution of something (probably not the motor but I am not sure). I am half-tempted to try to look at the gear wheels but that would involve trying not to break the vertical, sprung plastic V clip ( I assume one just squeezes it together but so far I have not succedded) and then going against your advice to open up partially the motor. Perhaps I will just enjoy its running at a 50% cruising speed?

Hey Sam so I’ve noticed in your more recent videos you often criticize paint. As I’m sure you know applying things like varnish and or certain types of clear coat can effect the glossyness of the paint greatly. With that as a manufacturer I’d be asking what would you rather a code matching paint job or an adjusted color for the improved finish?
