All the locos huffed and puffed. But try as they might, they could not pull the massive chair of the giant, Samuel. "Come on Thomas" they cried "Come and help". So Thomas hooked up to the front of the train and pulled with all his might. Huff Puff said the locos and gradually the giant began to move. "Yay for Thomas" they cried "You saved the day." "And we now return to our regular programming..."

I love the mad scientist aspect to this. It's hilarious, but you also touch on a lot of real world physics here. There's adhesion, rolling resistance, tractive effort, drawbar pull. Also a cause of motor burnouts; the locos vulnerable here were those that didn't wheelspin. To me that's a design fault. A model loco's adhesion should not exceed it's pulling power. Basically they make these locos too heavy nowadays. I've never attempted something like this (sadly I'm just not quite crazy enough!) but I do get my trains hauling quite heavy payloads of stuff around the garden. It's real railfreight in OO Gauge, great fun!
@SamsTrains

We did an experiment like this at school as part of Nuffield Science. We used an O gauge clockwork engine and a board resting on micro-beads. How railways work is they keep the friction to a minimum. In the experiment you have done, the friction produced by your own weight on the trolley wheels is very great in relation to the OO gauge locos which is why you needed so many of them. Microbeads have now been banned in the UK, so your only option is to make a hovercraft!

There was a Hornby Dublo demo where a single Ringfield powered diesel pulled about 16 kilos, 2 pulled 28 and 3 pulled 50 (figures converted from old money ), all on a specially built trolley presumably with much lower rolling resistance (loads were various sized human beings), reported in Model Railway News March 1961 !!!

I REALLY enjoyed this little trip that you took. As a 1/8th scale 'live steamer', I could easily relate to what you were up. The shame of it all it seems to me, is, that you don't have a bit longer track, for one. And, if you could put you trolley on the rails in some way, that would really cut back on the pulling resistance. Thanks for your interesting videos Sam.

Just and FYI, I collect used HO scale engines, rebuild them and get them running like new again and through experience I've learned that there is little chance you would burn or damage a motor, the wheels would slip before such a thing would happen. Ps. I did several videos on my collection a few years ago and was about 105 engines, I need to do an update video as I've collected quite a bit more but if your interested just check out the train playlist on my channel.

True, but it depends on the quality of the motors... many motors used in certain modern locos are very poor quality; definitely not recommended to let them struggle like this! That sounds great, I'll look! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

This sounds like a perfect example of weird Imperial units. Weighing yourself in the number of model trains it takes to pull you. "Oh, me? Yeah, I've been exercising. Down to 32 engines!" "Are those Hornby or Dapol?" "Bachmann, you fool, I'm American." "Pfft, maybe 32 in O gauge." "Hey!"

Hornby Dublo did similar when they had 3 Hornby Dublo Ringfield powered Deltic locomotives back in 1960 hauling a small child named Glenna Ferdinando who weighed 8 stone on a trolley. Sam Good for you in trying to copy this type of demo very entertaining. How many Dublo Deltics would you need to pull you?

I think the problem with the initial measurement (2:22) is that the pulling force is actually about 2x the tension on the string (it's a pulley system), so the reading on the meter must be doubled (2x6=12N to start). From your measurements, 20 locos yields a total of 8.5N pulling power; in the successful run you used 30 locos, so that'll be around 12.75N, which is close to the required 12N.

Your wacky experiments are super entertaining, and they're getting more involved by the video! You actually did some serious measurements and calculations in this one! Gotta feel bad for those poor engines who got replaced though... Then again, gotta feel bad for the ones pulling *_The TROLLey!_* Hilarious, creative, and gripping video Sam, well done!

Excellent fun. Now do it with a BRUTE - British Rail Universal Trolley Equipment. A sort of wire cage on castors. Actually you are not the first. In 1960 a SINGLE Hornby Dublo 'Co-Co' locomotive - motorized on ONE bogie - pulled a 3-stone boy and trolley along an 18ft track. God knows what the amperage required was, but that original Ringfield motor was certainly up for it. The 'Co-Co' was a sort of cut-down model of the Class 55 Deltics, same outline but reduced in length, with a die-cast body weighing 1 lb 6 oz.

Hi Sam you need to do this experiment again. This time have the passenger trolley running on steel bars for rails using large ball races as wheels and you will find that it needs far fewer OO scale engines to do. The soft wheels on that truck on wood have too much friction. I would try this out myself but I think I've eaten too many pies. LOL

@@SamsTrains It was in the 1962 catalogue. Can't put an image of it here but this is the text - Amazing Hornby-Dublo Ring Field Motor Test ONE standard Co-Co diesel locomotive hauled a 3-STONE boy. TWO standard Co-Co diesel locomotives hauled a 4-STONE boy. THREE standard Co-Co diesel locomotives hauled a young lady of 8 STONE. The fantastic power of the new Hornby-Dublo Ring Field Motor was demonstrated at a Press Show in London. An 18 ft. length of track had been prepared having angle iron rails on either side upon which was mounted a seven pound trolley. Before a group of astounded Journalists, standard Co-Co diesel locomotives fitted with the Ring Field Motor easily carried out the feats itemized. Comment on completion of this test: 'We would not have believed it possible' We reproduce the photograph taken at the Press Show illustrating the little boy -whose weight was exactly 3 stone -being hauled along the Ring Field Motor test track by one Co-Co Diesel-Electric locomotive.

@@SamsTrains Can you aquire a couple of lengths of angle iron, fit steel wheels to the trolley and repeat the test, steel on steel has much less rolling resistance than rubber wheels on wood, hope you do this as the results will be most interesting.

Can't remember who did it but two decades ago or so in Germany, a model railway manufacturer got to the guiness book by pulling 2 peoples with the help of HO scale locomotives. And they were not riding a TROLLey... but a *real* tanker wagon! It was hundreds of locomotives, arranged in a similar setup than yours, parallel railways laid between the tracks of the real scale railway.

Hi mate, great video. Just to you know, when you were testing to amount of newtons to move you on the trolley you were essentially using a pulley system as you had the string going out then coming back, this mean the amount of force required would be double what you measured.
