The sticker is there because the Irish railways were rebranded (new logos) several times over the years. The CIE logo was the earliest for this model, the livery was updated to IR and finally IE before these locos were phased out. Murphy's models are saving on printing costs for the packaging by adding the relevant sticker to the package, that corresponds with the model livery in the box. 🙂

I manage a model shop in Ireland and I have to show every customer how to get the loco in and out of that packaging. So as to reduce the number of returns, where the customer most likely broke it when the took it out. But you're not wrong about how nice a runner they are. I highly recommend you try Irish Model Railways A-Class, if you can.

That's a very good idea... and I certainly don't blame you! Doesn't make any sense does it... this foam method A. does a bad job of protecting models B. is a nightmare to unpack and C. must cost much more to make than the simple vaccu-form clamshells that *every other manufacturer* sees fit to use... it sure is a strange one! Thanks for the tip on the A-class - will have to look into that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Irish crews didn't like the visibility when run hood/bonnet forward, especially on long-distance runs. Same goes for the BR Class 20. I don't think running those classes cab foward was half-arsing it, more like the crews were dealing with a difference in operating philosophies (Irish/UK vs North American).

@@sharkymcsharknose2979 Exactly right especially when these 121s were very similar to Single-cab American switcher locos. The biggest difference of course being that these were as you know for mainline use rather than shunting duties. If these 121s weren't in pairs; they would sometimes be turned round on a turntable. Running in pairs nose to nose with the cabs facing out did at least eliminate the need to be turned round.

This is a GM EMD GL8 which is a series of general purpose locomotives built between 1960 and 1965 for export with railroads with severe restrictions on loading gauge and height being its target market, its was capable of fitting B-B or A-1-A flexicoil trucks that could accept axels with gauges between 1000 and 1676mm, being powered by a EMD 8-567C V8 roots blown diesel engine. GL8 stands for: G = General purpose L = Light weight 8 = Powered by EMD 567C V8 diesel

Another issue with relying on a website, even if good information and videos existed, is websites and pages/content are likely to disappear sooner or later! The advantage of good instructions on paper in the box is generally they stay there and most people keep the boxes or at put paperwork in a folder, meaning even in 30+ years when the website and/or content is long dead, the paper version usually still exists. I hate when companies rely on websites for product information/instructions!

I'd get keen on US locos here soon. We're setting the new "Standards" for the rest of the world...unfortunately. see-through grills are only the start (thank Athearn), the Roller bearings on locomotives is relatively new (Scaletrains). Soon your budget engines will have brass parts, and be on par with what are now the main-stream locomotives. It's already that way here in the US, I can buy a locomotive new, with DCC & sound, and have brass parts, see-through grills, rotating bearings, and a full interior. Some manufactures are even modeling parts of the engine in the proper areas. Let's hope not though. The NMRA (our NEM) is hearing from alot of budget model railroaders, and the manufactures aint to happy about the news they're receiving. Most of them have to open budget series with locos under $100 without DCC or sound, and bare bones detail. The only detail allowed is road specific plow & lights, that's it.

I have been watching your loco reviews for 3 years and noticed a trend. I feel like every time you review a diesel loco there is a good chance the crawl would be flawless while steamers it's hit or miss. Definitely the best performer of 2021 and a unique loco. At 21:59 all our freight cars have those. It is a nice feature and is called the "journal box" in US railroad language. It is nice to see new model manufacturers too other that Dapol, Hornby or Bachmann. I would love to see their passenger cars too. And you can have a complete Irish train. I don't know about passenger trains since in the US our railroads are used for freight and a set of cars is usually referred to as a set, string or block. See you soon Sam and I'll be waiting for the next review.
@carbon12552 жыл бұрын
It absolutely has nothing to do with the fact there is more room in a lot of the diesels, and they don't have the drive mechanism interfering, honest. But it is no guarantee at all. a manufacturer could easily use that to put lower quality motors in. Plus, diesel runners have to have something going for them as they are less mechanically interesting.

If you do ever get one, I really want you to do the history section not just for class, but the engine. Why? It partially sank MV Arctic Star in 1981, after it’s train of boxcars derailed, and dragged the engine backwards, crashing into the ship’s hull, which flooded rapidly. Arctic Star was also formerly a Royal Navy Troop Transport (as HMS Royal Scotsman) and the HQ of Scientology (as MV Apollo)! The ship was later raised, and scrapped.

Great to see you doing other brands Sam. Hopefully German model stuff as well one day. Must say that I’ve never heard of this brand. For what I seem to perceive is to handle these like Roco… extremely careful because of all the high detailing. Roco is a professional train model’s brand so buyers know how to unpack them by default. The price is a steal for such a loco, from my perspective. Roco prices are at least double that, but then you won't be seeing wonky handrails and such, and packaging is indeed accordingly. This still is a great piece of kit for the money I dare say. I do agree about instructions though, but I don’t know if this is to be, or is, a settled brand targetting towards Irish professionals modellers.

I've always been a fan of the EMD SW series switchers (or really any end-cab switcher), so this Irish Class 121 looks just great to me. In the US some railroads run SWs in pairs with the cabs on the outer ends for visibility, especially when they are in "transfer service" between yards. That said, the crawl is excellent as is the running and near silence whilst running. It must be fitted with a 5 pole motor, surely. Am sure the flywheels help no end too. Its weight ensures it is a good puller. Best, Pete.

Thanks a lot Pete - yes overall this gets a pass from me! I think some suitable coaches are in the works, pretty sure I read something about that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I must commend how you produced this review of the CIÉ (B)121 class loco. The designation on the label S/Train is an abbreviation for Supertrain, the livery worn by this loco introduced with the Supertrain mark 2d carriages circa 1973. (The later Irish Rail white stripe livery is colloquially referred to as Tippex livery). I reckon that you were quite comprehensive in reviewing this loco. One issue though which would be worth considering is the ease of converting this loco to 21mm gauge, Irish gauge in 4mm scale. The Irish Railway Models A class can be readily converted to 21mm gauge by pushing out the wheels on their axles.

What a nice loco, some matching coaches would definitely go well with it. The locomotive's base in the EMD SW-series is very apparent, it literally looks almost exactly like the ones they're based on, just with a shorter cab and and no walkways in front of the cab or behind the hood. Also, in terms of "see through" value on locomotive hoods IRL, at least some GE Dash-8s seem to be that way underneath the flared radiators and the EMD "tunnel motors" (built for the Southern Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande Western railroads), as well as the latter's GP15-1/GP15T locomotives, which all had lowered air intakes (designed for the tunnel motors) to prevent them from pulling in as much exhaust in tunnels. Also, now you just need to get an EMD SW-series switcher to go with it, lol.

Sure - would be awesome to get some proper coaches! Yeah it sure does look very EMD! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Fantastic looking model, I was blown away by the rotating axle boxes. It was nice to see what an Irish train looks like. Do you know if they were modified for running cab forward in real life? Normally on American diesels with that type of design, they would run with the cab in the back.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
I agree - I wasn't aware of that feature, and it's very impressive! Yeah I think cab would go at the back... but it's interchangeable of course! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

The gauge was the same as the UK railway network as the majority of rolling stock and steam locomotives were imported from the UK mainland. When it came to diesel's of this era Ireland required a similar powered diesel to trains found in the UK but due to being a smaller country they had to have more compact sized locomotives and these American switcher locomotives were suitable in size and power for their needs.

The locomotive had a large gap inside so that the air can circulate. The model is absolutely prototypical in that respect.

Could for future reviews, a few tests be added? 1. Reversing thru 2nd radius points (with reverse curve, i.e. right then left, or vice versa) 2. Traversing 1st radius; irrespective of if the box says it possible or not

Handrails probably dislodged by heavy mits I'd say, took me 10 seconds to find the MM Packaging instructions with a google. Also instructions on the MM site giving DCC installation instructions re the top panel if you care to check. Why in Earth would you unscrew the body to install the decoder when there is a panel in the roof. plastic vs Metal buffers list you the Benefits there, Once weathered you wont know anyhow.

Agreed, the high and mighty attitude gets tiresome at times. Complaining about lack of info on the label when it clearly says CIE Supertrain. Or Complaining about the large CIE sticker on the box. Needless waffle, and yes, why on earth would you unscrew the body??
