I think Hornby, along with their various brands; Corgi, Airfix and Scalextric, are already in trouble. Just over a year ago they appointed none other than Lyndon Davies, the owner of Oxford Diecast/Rail, as their CEO, most likely as his company has been going from strength to strength whereas Hornby Hobbies has been in decline for some time. This most likely being a desperate attempt to get the company back in the game. As far as I know however the two companies are still completely independent of each other.

@@mitchellhogg4627 Yeah the reason why I think hornby is trash is because I bought a frame for a Gresley teak and it arrived in an envelope smashed and broken. Then when I ordered another one one of the tool boxes fell off in the box. To me that screams JUNK!

Hi Sam, thank you for your response to my comment. One point I failed to mention was that I had placed an order for an Oxford N7 and cancelled it months later in favour of a different machine. Following your glowing report on the N7, I feel I now need to reinstate the order super quick to ensure I get delivery of the locomotive. I thank you for your excellent work that enables a decision on what to, and what not to buy.

Excellent video as always. Keep up the good work.

WOW!!!! There is not one thing I do not like about this engine!!!! You got a REAL good deal on that engine, and I can't find anything wrong with it either. I LOVE the elegant gray paint livery, the crisp details, the pipe work, the red connecting rods, the painted boiler and cab details, the fact that the 2 rear trailing wheel flaw from the Adam's Radial 4-4-2 Tank engine has been fixed on this engine, the smooth running, and it's powerful!!! MY God, I'm blown away, and this is just the first engine for 2019 which is not good because this engine is gonna be VERY tough to beat!!!! You're gonna need to find one heck of an engine to beat this. I can't stop admiring this beautiful little engine. I'll most definitely get one when I can. An incredible way to start with this year's reviews, Sam. The N7 class was a fantastic model, its something to celebrate how good it is. They really put effort on the quality with many parts of the body being metal, making it very heavy. Its also a very good performer, 8 coaches isn't easy for many locos, and doesn't sees to struggle. The attention of detail is great too, the Worl War II White livery is very attrative looking, and its amazing they managed to make a good detailed cab, despite not being very visible one. And obviously, the value is suprisingly good, being a model that could be more expensive. This proves that Oxford really takes care for their costumers, being able to sell their models for a great price, wich is very afortable for many people. Its a great model to start, similar to the P class from last year and its ranking will be very difficult to pass, but time will tell. Anyways, hope you're having a nice day, and I'll see you in the next video.

It amazes me how great of a loco this is for such a reasonable price. As an LNER (GE) man I’ve been very excited about this product. Seeing the initial video and now this review of the loco it is going to be welcomed with open arms by LNER (GE) modelers. So you know Sam, The loco is very accurate to the prototype as a belpaire fireboxed version of the N7 some modelers have been a bit suspicious about the chimney, dome, blower pipe (which was fitted to a certain series of the N7) and the fitting of vacuum pipes to a GER loco (which tended to run on air only) But if I am honest for £87 pounds that’s simply amazing and the LNER & BR versions will also be very very nice

That’s seriously impressive. I’ve an LNER one on pre-order and I’m looking forward to it even more now. I’ve seen a video elsewhere of one hauling 16 coaches on the level having started on a 3rd radius curve. There does look to be a visible join on the boiler, where the motor cradle is part of the lower boiler. I think it shows up more due to the livery, I expect it’s less obvious in black. That Westinghouse cylinder looks like a nice moulding mind. I like the new transition by the way.

@henrybn14ar5 жыл бұрын
The Great Eastern section of the LNER had air brakes. If I recall, the entire class was intact until the electrification to Chingford and Enfield was complete, around 1960, which took away their livelihood. The GER had considered electrification in 1903 and built a freak locomotive called the Decapod to test the steam alternative. In the end, it settled for keeping steam until the LNER completed the Shenfield electrification in 1949. The small driving wheels gave them sparky acceleration.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry, thanks very much for the information on this! I'd love to see a photo of the freak Dacapod!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Received my early BR version this week. Straight out of the box it performed faultlessly on the club layout, getting many positive comments from other members. My only gripes are: the lack of internal valve gear as you also remarked, the cheapskate application of the smokebox number direct to the smokebox door and a complaint that applies to all enclosed cab models, make the cab roof removable please. Fitting crew, weathering and simply admiring the wonderful detail now commonplace in 4mm scale cabs would all be so much simpler. These locos are the first ones I was familiar with as a child living in North London. When they were facing withdrawal in the early 60's, the crews used to invite us schoolboys to travel in the cab from Enfield Town ("Just keep your heads down as we pass the loco depot office, boys") and even operate the reversing wheel and regulator on occasions!
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Really glad to hear that - they're wonderful aren't they?! Yes that was one of my criticisms too - but just fine for the price! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains I spent this afternoon weathering my N7, it looks much better now but haven't managed to squeeze a crew into the cab yet. As a result of minutely scrutinising this loco I found another issue that I'll need to work on; i.e. the front coupling sticks out far too much. A Bachmann LBSC E4 tank I was weathering as well has its front coupling way shorter.

I still need to get one of these - They're gorgeous things and the only reason I haven't yet is the fact that, currently, I'm making use of several decent offers on SR Locos (which, given about 90% of my stock is Stock is Southern and the rest is LT is sort of logical). Once I've got myself an E4 I'll be getting an N7 (LNER Black to match my modelling period). As for haulage, eight wouldn't be a big deal for a real one of these (I think they were utilised on trains formed from pairs of Quint-Art sets, that is five-car sets that were articulated, and certainly on pairs of Quad-Art sets, which would be eight total) so it's good that the model matches the prototype in that regard. If I had a better reason to get one (I.E. If I didn't model almost exclusively Southern prototypes) I'd already have one. As it stands I'm planning a London-area layout to justify one! Amazing in all areas - Just want Oxford to do a few ex-LBSCR and ex-SECR locos and they'll have my money. What mystifies me about Oxford vs. Hornby is the fact that they share C.E.Os and clearly collaborate (Hornby's 1:76 scale road vehicles are generally made by Oxford, not Corgi and Oxford's. Buildings have been incorporated into Hornby's range) so how on earth can such a difference in price and quality be justified?

Great review for the new year!! Just wanted to ask, when the engines are running, is it safe to touch the track
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! Yes it's absolutely safe - you can't get a harmful shock from 12v. If your fingers are wet, you might feel a tingle if you touch both tracks at the same time - but it's certainly safe (and fun!) Thanks for watching - Sam :)

This engine has a real soft spot with me. This is the FIRST ready to run Great Eastern Railway Liveried engine!! After nearly 100 Years of Railway modelling! Insane! However I really REALLY hope they make a model of K85 No.1001, the only one Produed in the beautiful GER Royal blue. That would be another first for Railway Modelling.

Nice loco :D . I've had a footplate ride on the surviving example (No. 69621). It was my 18th birthday event... most people have a party or a dance, but I got a tour of the Llangollen Railway workshops, and a ride on one of the locos :P . So, I have a bit of a soft spot for this class!

This locomotive reminds me of Ryan who is from Thomas The Tank Engine which he appeared in Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure. I also never noticed the wheel arrangement on this train when its a 0-6-2 meaning this train has 0 front wheels 6 driving wheels and 2 small rear wheels.

Good Evening Sam, good to see you back reviewing model locomotives again. I must say, the Oxford Rail N7 Tank Engine is a superb model, quite cheap, runs flawlessly and really strong, for a 0-6-2 Tank Engine. I believe I could see 4 0-6-2 Tank Engines in the sidings & the odd one out is the Adams Radial Tank 4-4-2 on the turntable. Don't forget to review each of your model steam locomotives you got from the Warley Model Railway Exhibition at The NEC in Birmingham back in November 2018 including the Bachmann NRM GNR C1 Atlantic No.251. Superb review my friend. As usual, I give your review a 10/10 & 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Kind regards Jordan Shingler 😉

Mmmmmm, I've seen the price of the new Bachmann SECR C Class a while ago, very stupid, at least I have one, I've brought it when I was at Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham during their Open Day in July 2014 and I paided £96.00 for it, a much better price. Who knows, when the Bachmann C Class in SECR Green livery is released, one of the retailers might lower the price, so you can get it.

Hey Jordan, thanks very much for that mate - I'm so impressed with these N7s! Absolutely - I definitely won't forget my warley stuff! Yep - it's just crazy - I paid £90 for my SR lined black one!! Hi Sam Very interesting point you make on Oxford Rail. The Janus diesel they released are selling for £80 new in shops and if you wait around can be picked up for £50 (but shhh that's part of my review coming out early next month) and though they may not cover all detail differences (the Janus had lots of modifications through there careers to suit different industries) they offer a good representation of the prototype in a variety of liveries, the tooling having second production run with even more liveries back to back so there is more opportunities to pick up the models. Something they have done with the Dean Goods too. The coaches are apparently very competitive detail with a lot lower price tag too. With regards to an N7 I may be finding an excuse to sneak one into my NCB fleet... Liking the new intro and 'cut scenes' too Cheers Oliver

@@SamsTrainsonly trouble now Sam is having read up on them working what was called the "jazz" services I am now on a mission to find out what coaching stock that was, can't find it online so will have to ask around my local model rail club as there are one or two very knowledgeable sorts who might have an idea, they were likely short four wheeled coaches but I need to find out the actual type and whether models or very similar are available.

I watched someone else's video about this model earlier today and the only thing they found wrong with it, was a little bit of paint detail missing on the left whistle apart from that it's a great model it has a very unique livery. If I had a train layout of my own I would get this N7 plus that LBSC E4 you reviewed before.

@@SamsTrains I'm a fan of all different classes of steam engines from the small 0-4-0 Peckett to the large 2-10-0 9F plus I'm a fan of all different classes of Diesels. I watched your Hornby and Bachmann 2019 live chat videos and there are some nice models coming out. I liked the class 66 models in their new liveries my local model shop has the Hornby one's priced at £67 while the Bachmann one's are priced at £120 to £130. Apparently on someone else's KZbin video the newly painted Hornby class 66 models are ex LIMA models which were old class 59 models from years ago when i was little back in the 1980s they've just got remolded detail and repainted as class 66 their not bad models to be honest the price isn't bad ever.

11:43 but i do like that you can see the back side of the wheel! So (possibly) the best modeled you reviewed in a year was your first review again, eh? I might actually get myself one of these or a Hornby Peckett. On eBay I found the Peckett for $110 and the N7 was $132! But both are cheaper than the RRP for Bachmann Trains' 2-6-2 tender loco for $145 (which has basic detail and is a 20+ year old tooling)
