I just lugged my 70+lb 20 year old HP color laser onto the bench a few weeks ago. Had to fix a sticking solenoid (dampening pad turned to goo)....and of course its the one buried in the middle of the printer. Skillful application of cellophane tape fixed the problem. Surprisingly, replacement toner and service parts and still available for this thing. Can't go wrong with HP in that respect.

I am a Laser Printer and Copier Tech 44 years in the business and 32 as an independent w / my own company, Compressed air and printers/copiers bad idea, but it did provide me with plenty of work when a customer decided to go after a printer with a can of compressed air. The toner powder goes all over inside the printer and into every sensor ... and every mirror and lens in the system .... and into the feed system (jamming). It is best to use a Vacuum and a brush, you can use compressed air to clean out optics and sensors, but only after vacuuming out the loose toner !!

I worked for xerox in 1979, mid volume copiers theses type were coming out later, i know the developer goes bad, the drum was supposed to look clear, if it was hazy, we used either an alcohol or a solvent. The corotrons had to be cleaned and we restrung them.but these were huge machines.. the optics cleaned. The machines i worked on did 12000 a month. Low volume was 3000 and high was 100,000 a month. On your type, you could have jr techs because they swapped the drum module. Lasers just came out in1980.

Hey 12volt, I'm an aspiring mechanical engineer currently in college, and I can't believe your expertise and diagnostic skills. Your vids have helped me not only learn an incredible amount about electronics and how they work, but I also learn a lot about the design of complex electronics/machines and how engineers go about making them + what's good, what's bad, etc. I know most of the equipment you work on on this channel is "outdated" nowadays, but good design is a concept that carries over regardless of the age or type of machine in my opinion. I wish a majority of electronics/equipment these days were still designed to be serviced, I would have gone that route for sure. I've been curious, were there any certain machines or periods of time when you worked in the service field where stuff just had ridiculously high failure rates? Times when new equipment broke down non-stop? That kind of stuff to me is always interesting to learn about, especially since stuff was so different back then. Thank you for making all these videos!

That's an easy one. Old vcrs and camcorders. Throughout the 80s and 90s they were junk. They didn't get good till the late 90s and 2000s when they were light as a feather and yet people still think the old boat anchors are better. They're not. Why people are stull farting around with these old formats never ceases to amaze me when the new stuff is superior in every way. People want me to fix this old stuff so I do.

@12voltvids That’s a great question, whatever the reason is, I think it's why my dad keeps hunting for a sansui 8080. He insists that all new receivers are garbage, and I mean the 8080 is great from what I gather, but I don't know if it's worth eBay prices, especially with the selection of new equipment out today. I think he just wants to see "Sansui" and a wood grain finish whenever he goes to listen to music😁

@@jgilmour9123 i have a sansui 9090 and its ok. Nothing to write home over though. Its got power but its not clean power. Transistors of the day were just not that good. Distortion wise its pretty high compared to modern gear. People over pay for these all the time. I got mine for free on the mid 80s. Was brought in for repair and the owner wouldn't pay the 200 repair bill so I kept it. Now fools are paying 2 grand for these old beasts. If someone offered me something I couldn't resist I might just let mine go. I don't need the money so it would have to be something I would be a fool to refuse.

@@12voltvids Oh wow, even the 9090 isn't safe!! I heard countless things about it being the "holy grail" of receivers. I saw one at a pawn shop for 3 grand! It was gone the next time I went too, about a month later. I'll have to break the news to my pops that neither the 8080 or 9090 is a good choice for the money. Thank you for your responses!

@@jgilmour9123 they are all overrated. None of the receivers and amplifiers from the 70s were particularly clean. Pick up a technics suv9 if you want a kick ass amplifier. Wow that's lasted really well :-D Maybe the optics need a clean. Toner gets everywhere. i don't know much about lazer printers, i did have a ancient machine that had a high voltage bare wire near the drum. I did understand roughly how it worked, but i have forgotten it over the years.

I have an HP LaserJet 1200 black and white from 2001 75 K on the original fuser and it still works great. It's so old it has Parallel and USB connections I use an external print server so that it can be used on a network. The spinning mirror motor in the laser module started squealing a few years ago a few drops of SAE 20 on the shaft fixed it and it's been good ever since. Replaced the transfer roller and the paper pickup roller a few years ago. OEM cartridges are dirt cheap like 25 - 30 bucks shipped on E-bay. Sure it's only 600 DPI but for what I use it for printing text documents, shipping labels, datasheets, and schematics I see no reason to upgrade. No way any modern printer would last anywhere near as long or be as inexpensive to maintain.

If I were you I would have bought a separate, cheap laser printer for mono prints, like schematics, etc. It's not worth wearing out a color laser with mono prints. If duplex printing was a necessity, that's another story, because duplex printers are not cheap even if mono, and they are pretty bulky. But I guess duplex prints are rarely needed, so you could print those on this, and print schematics on the mono printer. BTW the page count on this is really low for its 18 years. I saved two 20+ years old HP mono Laserjet 4200s from being tossed out, IIRC one of them has like 300.000 page count, and works flawlessly after a pickup roller replacement. It was used in an office from ~2000-2021, turned on 24/7. The LAN card bay died in it, so it can only be used though parallel port. It's not the fault of the LAN card, because it doesn't work with an other, known good card either. It might just be a fuse, at one point, I'll try to repair it, but the other one works, so I'll probably keep this just as a parts donor.

the reason you don't want to use compressed air is that the toner is like fine sand and gets in sensors and the paper feed path causing jams. sometimes the toner will even drift into the laser imaging unit which is full of mirrors and lenses.

Not sure what you're replying to ?? as a Printer & Copier Tech of 44 years, I've pretty much seen it all ... from toner added from 4 feet away to the wrong type of toner added, machines in floods, customers repairing things with hammers, Rats chewing through wiring, and Customers seeing me use compressed air (at a minimum ) to clean out sensors, to self repairs that actually worked ... A Laser printer either uses a row of LED's to image the drum or a spinning mirror and laser directed thru mirrors and lenses to image the drum, the laser type is usually sealed to prevent dust intrusion, but after 18 years ... dust and toner does make it in !! this causes light copies, but empty cartridges can do that too !! and after 18 years the source of parts is pretty dried up ... those that are available on Ebay are old stock and usually have started to fail because they are old !! I have had to make due because I am an independent Tech. I have made things work that shouldn't have. 12VoltVids would attest to the fact that some printers are better than others just as Some VCRS and DVD players were of better quality. The old HP black and white printers did run forever and only needed Toner cartridges, feed wheels and the occasional Fuser. Brothers printers were another Hardy breed, I have a 19 year old Brother laser printer that still runs and because it is Brother ... the toner is cheap. I have 2 of the newest HP Color Laser Printers and have them running Generic toner with a swapped chip (quality is as good as OEM. Many people don't know that the toner HP, Xerox, and other use is produced by another company entirely ... in fact HP is and has been made by Canon for years and years, Xerox hasn't made anything for over 20 years, they used SHARP, TOSHIBA, and SAMSUNG - They even sell toner for HP under their name that was made by someone else. It's been a very interestin business and will continue to be !!

I take it back, precision roller has discontinued almost all of the parts, Ebay may be your best bet ... this one is really old, came out in 2005. Tee newer printers are 4 times faster and use use 4 small drum / toner combos that use a flat image belt making them much faster and more reliable. The newest machines though are using "Smart Chips that lock you to the OEM toner ... but there is a way around that !!

Can you advise on a very old Samsung CLP-500 that has not been used in years. It was a good printer but I think it needs new toner cartridges because it has been idle in storage. I can't get the current cartridges to line up properly and am not sure if that is the design or if there is a problem. I don't want to buy new cartridges until I know more because they are EXTREMELY expensive. Can you advise me please?

Third party toners are available as well, but that's also $200 for the full set, and it's often a gamble, if it's not a well-known 3rd party brand it might be of horrible quality. But probably the transfer belt needs to be changed as well, and that's just not worth it. The drum and transfer belt should be OK at this page count, but they might be deteriorated just from their age. @@12voltvids
