After replacing my desktop computer for 2 weeks I'm ready to give my verdict on the Samsung Dex (Station).
I'll show you how to run almost any program in FULL screen on the Dex.

Yes basically you just have to set you device to print from you phone and that carries over in Dex. For example with me I have the following: I loaded Google Cloud Print (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.cloudprint&hl=en), HP Print service (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hp.android.printservice&hl=en) and Print Hand (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamixsoftware.printhand&hl=en) - because I am a belt & suspenders kinda guy (lol) - with these loaded I can printer to any printer I come across so clound, wifi direct, bluetooth, etc.. After they are loaded and working you just do a file print like normal.

I got a DeX this week and found even with Max and being in developer mode, a full screen window will work, but having regular sized windows frequently doesn’t. The screen will be black or tries to load for ages. The best work around I’ve found in the past few days, whilst scrubbing through a film you’ll see it trying to show frames. If you click on the double arrows in the lower right to zoom in, you’ll see the film showing slightly outside the window. Adjust the window to the dimensions of the film, be it a 16x9 shape or a square one for older films ( Star Trek etc ) and you’ll be able to watch Netflix in a window instead of being restricted to full screen.

With the Oreo update more programs are running in full screen (like Defense Zone 3 HD) , you may want to pick up a Steel Series - Joystick controller - amzn.to/2fjbZKJ this make playing games a lot easier. Let me know how it works out!

I got DEX and I love it! $150 bucks to replace my $700 laptop was a great investment. This still needs little things to be fixed but so far its all good. I actually don't want the windows to maximize. I would love to see that the apps still have the same window size as in my phone. Why would I want my bank of america app to take more real state on my large screen? When I can have 4 apps open at the same time and look at information across my screen? Its not like the app is going to give me more options when I enlarge it. If I want more options I will just go to the website right? like in a real desktop. As for other apps like netflix, yes, that would have to have the option to maximize. So I either want the phone screen size or the large screen. Also, I didn't like the fact that my small spinning external drive didn't work. The USB from the DEX station didn't have enough power to make it run, and that's ok I guess, They use the same power cable to power the phone so I don't expect this to get any better. As for the people who have external drives that plug in to the power, you will not have that problem. As for me, I am just buying a 256gb micro SSD memory stick and I am going to try to install google drive and share my files across platforms. I am a heavy user of my computer using apps like photoshop and autocad. So I am still using a desktop for this. I might give the remote desktop thing a try. I usually don't like this since it has a lag but I will try it anyway...

There is a way to output sound through the hdmi. I'm going to plug it into my TV which is connected to a speaker system, boom, awesome sound on a very smart TV.

Plus, when connected to a computer monitor via HDMI, sound will be coming from either the monitor that has the built in speakers, or monitor that's connected to an external speaker through the aux port. Otherwise, wirelessly through the Bluetooth is always an option.

They make hdmi audio extractors that will pass through the video and split out the audio to 3.5mm or other formats. I use one to watch tv on my monitors.

Why not put it in mirror mode so it will go fullscreen.. if you exit then put it back to dex mode..

A complete desktop uses an average of 200 Watt hours (Wh). This is the sum of the average consumption per hour of the computer itself (171 W), the internet modem (10 W), the printer (5 W) and the loudspeakers (20 W). Assuming that a computer is on for eight hours a day, the annual consumption comes to 600 kWh. Unless you need to do heavy video editing or playing video games, Dex makes the perfect low power companion to a full pc setup.

Finally a very useful review of what it Dex can and cannot do, with work arounds. Now my question is with the Note 8 coming out which I will not be purchasing yet do you think the Dex system price will be reduced in the near future. I did hear they may be giving away a DEX station with purchases of the Note 8.

To open kinemaster without paying for app all you have to do is screen mirror the phone then open app it even works on some apps that dont let you open it up to max

Awesome video! They are now 55 dollars now on amazon. I bought one just to test to see if there was a performance difference between the official dex pad and 3rd party usb c hub which I already had. And what do you know there is a performance difference with the dex pad outperforming my 3rd party hub. I'm keeping the dex pad for sure

The third party hubs vary greatly depending upon their quality I do have a video where I tested a couple of third-party Cubs but as you point out you can get the official hub for the same price so at this point just go with the brand name

I use the Google Desktop Remote solution and it works great on my Note8, I do not have Dex (yet)..so I was wondering if you have tried the google product for remote access. I am able to use Dex with Dex Max and MicroSoft RP Client to access my desktop with full function except for audio. For some reason I am unable to get sound through bluetooth or a usb headset. I am using Logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse with the dongle plugged into the Dex. I can't help but feel like this is some sort of connection setting I have messed up as running internet straight from Dex not using RP Client I can get the sound. Any suggestions on what is wrong or how to solve my problem.

+James Ritchie I use the Sabrent USB Audio adapter and it supports audio in & out I use it all the time now when recording videos in Dex. What happens when you get a phone call while using Dex? If you pull it out of the dock to answer the call, what happens to this desktop environment? Does it close? Does it remain running in the background?

Great question! When you get a call it pops up on your screen answers in speakphone and it works great considering the mic is at the bottom of the phone in the dock. Yes you can be pretty brutal with Dex there is no shutdown proceedure....just grab and go and yes everything is just as you left it when you return it to the dock.

Imagine connecting this to your TV! It can pretty much replace Chromecast. I can game emulators from Samsung Dex and use Team Viewer to remote control on my computer. Hey can you game on team viewer? Like play a simple strategy game, like XCOM 2?

Liked your option for using an old computer and utilize team viewer for remoting into your computer, but... I tried to do it and the app won't open within Dex now. I have downloaded it a couple times and won't open either straight or even tried to use it in the Dex Max just in case I missed you doing that, but it won't work within that app either... are you still able to use it on yours? or did you find another option that works instead of a virtual system, as I really don't want a paid service for how little I need the desktop environment

i connected it to my tv wich is 1080 p and the quality colors are not great, my mom has a 4k tv and it looks good on hers but 1080p and 720p tvs quality of the videos was not great so i just lost 100 dollars.. i thought this was usefull since i use my tv as computer.

You can check on ebay and amazon you should be able to get a hdmi monitor for $50 or $60. Most times Best Buy has open box monitors that the practically give away rather than ship back to the company....

Yes it does suck. It would be better if it's a laptop dock for portability. Connecting the lapdock to the TV via HDMI will also give you the DeX experience. Other than that it's really great.

I agree i would like a laptop dock. I've seen the mock ups of what the next version of the Dex pad might look like. If it's true I think it's a step backwards

V. Sriram Sundar selfish statement..... think about those who are unable to afford a decent laptop to. I Literally spent $206 between the dex. , a keyboard and WORD and sandisk 256gb external hard drive.

some company already tried the phone/latop thing and it was a flop... I would never want that. Chromebooks are pretty cheap AND those that travel would probably prefer to just bring the phone and a doc with them and work remotely. Citrix and Horizon work very well through this. I have a cheap version of the DEX doc ($30) that works great but not quite as nice and I like the chromebook like experience and I have my phone along for the ride. If there is a way to get dual monitors working through this, I would use this more often... but I have multiple PC's with multi-monitor set ups and miss that too much when I use this. All and all I really love where the technology is going with all of this and as more and more things are moving into the cloud... VDI is where it will eventually be and devices like these will be where companies need to go. Cheaper and more secure then Windows PC's on everyone's desktop.
