@@DariuszTech haha things have changed quite a bit since then. OneUI is so much nicer than TouchWiz. For the longest time I stuck with Nexus/Pixel devices most of the time because of the software experience, but these days I've grown to prefer Samsung software over Google's. Updates are slower for sure, but the software has a lot more useful features and options that I've come to appreciate. Their design language and performance of the UI have all improved a lot. For the extra samsung account, services, and stuff, i just ignore them and use google's alternatives. 😂 But this is just my personal preference though and I know not everyone will like it still. Anyway, looking forward to seeing your thoughts on it on your channel! 👍

Great review. I'm waiting for my S21 to arrive. I'm glad you talked about the software, and I'm surprised no one other reviewer has spoken about selecting which additional Samsung apps you want when setting up the phone. Nice work!
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! Hope you like your S21 as much as I do too! I've always wondered about the selection of samsung apps during setup and whether it might be region specific? Samsung phones here in Singapore have had that options for a long time now, but I still see feedback about duplicated apps (for e.g. samsung browser + chrome) from time to time from US reviewers. So it could really be region specific though, but I can't know for sure since i don't have their devices from other regions. 😂
@haarismemon
@haarismemon 4 жыл бұрын
@@axhng Thank you Alex! Here in the UK, things could be different. I haven't had to go through the initial phone setup in around 2 years so things might have changed. It could very well be region specific. Currently on my Galaxy S9, there a few Samsung apps that I am unable to uninstall or disable, which is a bit annoying. I'll have to see if the S21 I get forces me to keep more Samsung apps installed.
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
@@haarismemon Hopefully they applied these changes to more regions! There are still a handful of samsung stuff that can't be disabled on the S21, but nothing that would really affect the user experience and can mostly be ignored. These day, even Google has their own set of apps that I have to disable on their Pixel devices anyway. 😂

@@axhng ah interesting 😂 Something that no one has mentioned in their reviews is how the haptics are in the S21. iPhone's are known for their amazing haptics. And with the S9, the haptics have been terrible. How are they on the S21? Btw, does your S21 come with a preinstalled screen protector? I heard somewhere that the US versions don't come with one, and I'm a little worried they decided to do it globally. Also are you rocking your S21 with a case? If so, any recommendations? Really appreciate your quick replies, thank you!
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
@@haarismemon no problem at all! oh yeah. haha. not sure if it's the same for other reviewers, but for me at least i feel like most Android phones have pretty decent haptics these days so it normally doesn't come to mind that I should talk about it much, unless it is particularly bad. the haptics on the S21 feels pretty decent to me, though still not quite as good as the iphone 12 though. Not sure if this makes sense but the haptics on the iphone still feels a bit more immediate and clean? The units in Singapore does come with a pre-installed film protector and it's a pretty good quality one at that. It has surprisingly good oleophobic coating. But it probably doesn't offer much protection against drops though. the good thing is that the screen is flat at least, so it'll be easier and cheaper to get good quality protectors. Unlike those curved screens which normally would require some sort of LOCA glue + UV application to get a decent fitting glass protector. Case wise I don't really have any recommendation though. sorry about that. i normally go for those simple and cheap and clear thin TPU cases since they work well with phone grips like Popsocket. They are cheap enough that i can replace them more frequently too. 😂

Comparing the previous S series, I didn't really liked the way they have designed the old S10 camera,and the S20 looks boring with the only thing that is sticking out from the competition is the really nice blue colour. The S21 actually looks like a really good looking phone. I think it actually feels more unique than the past phones and I doubt that the other android phones are gonna want to follow suit with Samsung on this one this time.

indeed. this was pretty much my main concern, especially battery drain during mobile data usage. But seems like there is a noticeable improvement over the Exynos 990. This is what I got when I tried to run it from 100% to 5%. SOT might be a bit higher than usual for me because there were quite a bit of lighter usage like watching youtube, netflix, and reading in the web browsing though. but overall unless i use the camera heavily or play a ton of games, it can last me a day of use pretty easily. Thank you Alex. My S21 Ultra arrives this afternoon along with the Galaxy Buds Pro. I am in one of those regions where the trade-in values were high and with a lower list price, my out of pocket on the S21 Ultra is less than I paid on the S20 Ultra. Also a region where we never received cases in the box. Have you tried the TRN T300 with Bluetooth 5.2? In theory, there is some battery gain but in practice, it might be in the noise if it is just a few minutes more usage. Great work as usual.

Nice!! I've heard good things about the galaxy buds pro, crinacle seems to rate it quite well too. Are you planning to review those? I've used it with the T300 but didn't really test the battery life though. But I'm actually not sure if the smaller S21 has bt5.2 or not. Gsmarena specs says that the s21 ultra has 5.2, but the s21 and s21+ is just 5.0. Samsung's website doesn't really say too. 😂

@@axhng I am planning on it, but taking a little break during the lull in IEMs for the holidays. I have two of the older pairs and they are great all-around sets for phone, music, games, movies, etc. But not necessarily my favorite for music as they are not as engaging as a big V-shaped set. I did see Crinacle's review and he has liked the other Galaxy buds sets as well. Some people really loved the Samsung AKG wired buds also. I had the same impression, they are nice, but they do not grab my attention. The Pro model has changed up the drivers so I am looking forward to giving them a try. As well as take another look at the TRN T300 with 5.2.

So looking forward to see if you'll be trying those as well. Hope you have a good rest! Cheers!

Thanks! Yeah, that could be the case since here in SG we had the 8GB/128GB S20 if I recall correctly, but then with S21 it's 8GB/256GB, so we only get a 50 SGD price reduction. In US the S20 went from 12GB/256GB at 1K USD to 8GB/128GB at 800 USD and 256GB for 850 USD, which is almost a 200 SGD reduction. Maybe I'm just underestimating how much extra RAM costs for phones, but I still feel like the reduction could be higher though. 😂 Also they did remove the charger, case, earphones, USB OTG adapter, from the box too. @@axhng Samsung has a completely different business model in USA. Here they do have deep ties with the three major carriers. This translate into lower upfront cost for users if they get the carrier version and commit to two years of service. Carriers pay subsidy to Samsung. It didn't get too warm for me while playing mobile legends & COD on higher graphic settings on mobile data for 30 mins straight too. The phone did get warm quite quickly while using the camera heavily while testing it but i didn't feel like it got too warm since most phones are like that. I actually felt like the Pixel 5 actually got a bit warmer than the S21 in those situations. I saw some ppl mentioning that for the S21 Ultra but i didn't test that so no idea if it's the same. I wonder if it could be the plastic back having less thermal conductivity thus feeling less warm compared to glass. or maybe the s21 ultra's screen producing more heat since it's higher resolution. or it could be some apps not being optimised as well too. :/

Hi, great review! I'm planning on buying a new phone in a month or so and the Galaxy S21 is one of the phones I've been looking at the most. How do you see it holding up long term? I know Samsung promised 3 years of software updates, but in my experience android phones tend to get a bit laggy as time goes, unlike iPhones. Also, how is the Exynos 2100? I live in Europe so I'd be getting the Exynos variant and I've heard it's not as big of a difference as the SD 865 and Exynos 990 last year, but that the SD 888 is still faster and overall a bit better. Is the difference big enough I should consider the OnePlus 9 with SD 888 over the Exynos S21?
@axhng
@axhng 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I think it'll probably hold up decently well since the Galaxy Note8 actually still works quite well (just can't quite game as well). These days with processors getting more powerful, it's not as bad as it used to be, so unless app developers suddenly go crazy and make their apps super resource intensive, I think it'll probably be okay in the long run. Samsung's track record with updates these days are probably better than Oneplus. I haven't really had much issues with Exynos 2100 actually. It has the tendency to warm up quicker, but it's the same with SDD888 this year. Performance is better, but unless you're pushing it to its limit (like playing genshin impact at the highest graphics settings), the difference isn't really that noticeable to me. Another thing is that I noticed S21 seems to fare better than the S21 Ultra in this regard for some reason. Feels less warm. For me the difference isn't big enough that I would prioritise it over other features of the phone, and for me the S21 is probably still more polished all round compared to OnePlus' devices, especially camera performance. That said, there are rumours that the S22 might have an early launch next year, might be better to just wait a bit if you can. if not the S21 FE is probably coming out next month too, so that could be another option to look out for. :)

Thanks!!! I'm quite impressed too considering Exynos chipsets in the past haven't been that great when it comes to mobile data usage battery drain. The difference between wifi and data usage for the social media apps that I tested the phone with is quite minimal as well, and similar to what I see on other phones like the Pixel 5 for example. 👍

Great review! Would you recommend switching from a Galaxy A71 to the S21? I'd try to keep the S21 for at least a year and a half-two years, so that's something to consider too: would you say the S21 is durable enough for around two years of use? I'd appreciate it if you could answer my questions :-)

thanks! if you have the budget, i think it'll be a nice upgrade for sure. faster processor, better screen, nicer design, 120hz, better cameras, etc. I still have a Galaxy Note8 that I use as a secondary phone all the time too and it still works quite well for me, so long term use probably isn't an issue. And samsung has promised regular updates for the phone too. Even though the Note8 is still on Android 9, i still see security patches from time to time. Like earlier this month I just got the January 2021 patch. So I think samsung is really taking their promises seriously. Though since it is an Android phone, I think it will still need some maintenance from time to time like removing unused apps, etc. Or a factory reset after a major update will normally help keep it running smoothly too. But yeah, i have very little doubt the phone will be good for 1.5-2 years. Just that I would still recommend cheap rear skin to keep the plastic rear panel from wear and tear even if you are planning to use a case. Even though it doesn't crack as easily, it will pick up scratches quite easily, and even with a case, just some dirt getting in between the case and the back panel would cause abrasions to appear over time. 😂 Hope this helps!

How does exynos behave in terms of temperatures?
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
I think it performs quite well actually. As mentioned in the review, it still warms up quickly during heavy use, but then never gets too warm to the touch. compared to older smaller Samsung flagships like the S10e, Note10, it feels less warm. I actually feel like my Pixel 5 feels warmer to the touch than the S21 in the same scenario actually. Anyway, that's just how samsung phones are in my experience. even when i tested the SD855 version of the S10e, it still has that same tendency to warm up quite quickly, just that it doesn't get as warm as the Exynos version. Playing COD Mobile, mobile legends (indoors at less than 50% brightness) higher frame rate settings for 30mins, the phone felt only slightly warm to touch. When outdoors and the screen cranks up the brightness it will run warmer as well, but that's kinda normal for all phones too. The only exception is Genshin Impact which will run noticeably warmer and will have a lot of dropped frames at 60fps, but I see that happen with the iPhone 12 as well. At this point, my guess is that the game was just not optimised as well for mobile. :/

@@axhng Thanks for your answer, I was asking because I have an S20 fe version of Exynos and when browsing applications like Instagram, Facebook, KZbin and Chrome it got quite hot reaching about 40 degrees, so I want to change it for this S21
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
@@kevincr4698 no problem. I've not tried the FE so not sure how hot it will get, but for the S21, if you're using those apps outdoors with higher screen brightness, it'll get a bit warm too actually. So i'm not totally sure if it will be better with the S21. When using it indoors at lower brightness it doesn't really warm up much when when on mobile data.

@@axhng Of all the phones you test, is the s21 the one with the highest temperatures in average use? or is it normal in terms of temperatures
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
@@kevincr4698 it's not the highest temp in average use for me. In terms of Samsung flagship phones, the S10E exynos version is probably the highest. To me the S21 feels less warm compared to the note10, Note20Ultra, and I think even the iPhone 12. Maybe it's because I tested the phone quite early on and they were still optimising it, but the iPhone 12 ran a bit warm too. Not sure how it is now with software updates though. But for me I never felt like the phone got unusually warm in regular use. It still gets quite warm when using the camera outdoors at max brightness for extended periods of time, but that's kinda the same for all the phones I've tested so far. Hope this helps. :)

I think S21 is a decent buy. But if you want to go big, get the Ultra.

+1 I played with my friend's S21 Ultra and it is basically the best that samsung has to offer now. very nice set of camera and a nice step up from the already good note20 ultra in terms of camera performance. Exynos 2100 has a pretty noticeable improvement over Exynos 990 too. Just not a fan of how big it is. But for those who don't mind bigger phones, it's a pretty nice option, especially now that prices are already lower than retail in singapore. haha.

his battery lasts how long using 60 hz ?
@axhng
@axhng 4 жыл бұрын
sorry, but i didn't really try that since it's a bit wasted to spend so much money on a brand new phone and then turn off a feature as nice as the 120Hz screen. 😂 but my guess is that it might be a bit better only since the refresh rate is can adapt to whatever content is being shown. So if i'm watching a video on youtube, the screen will just run at normal 60Hz anyway. and will only kick in the 120Hz in supported apps or when scrolling through content. :)

Should i upgrade from s20fe 4g bcz s20fe has overheating issue
@axhng
@axhng 3 жыл бұрын
if you meant the Exynos version of the S20FE 4G, it will probably be an improvement, but if you're having overheating issues on it, the Exynos 2100 on S21 won't be a huge improvement imo.
