It's not the 45W charger that's the problem, it's the phone itself. It's the phone that determines how much mAmps it's drawing. You could see through the whole charging that the phone wasn't drawing a stable mA throughout that it did on the 25W charger. This is done by Samsung to reduce battery temps, since they don't want another LiPo catastrophe on their hands.
@paigow6610 ай бұрын
Exactly! His testing needs improvement. You could clearly see the 45w charger dips under 15w a lot while the 25w charger was more stable, allowing it to catch up at around 65% battery. My 45w charger charges my s24 0-25% at 45w, 25-65% at 34w, 65-80% 22w, 80-90% 15w, 90-95w at 8w and the last 5% at 3w. This is the reason the slower charger can catch up after the battery is at 80% I charge my phone from 15-80% in 30 mins. That's what the super faster charger is for, a quick 30 min boost. 1hr charge for that last 20% is not worth.

@@paigow66what improvement? Do you want him to root the devices and get rid of the logic gate keeping the battery from overheating? The test is perfect!
@HansSchulze7 ай бұрын
@Vordigon1 if you blow cool air on the phone, it will not thermally throttle the charging to what seems to be 35C limit. You might have to remove cases which limit heat dissipation to get best charge. You would hope that PD would vary the charging voltage so that the phone doesn't have to DC-DC convert the voltage to what the pack needs and therefore save heat in the charging circuits. Note also that EVs charge fastest when they are close to empty, and slow down to 1/3 towards the end, even with liquid cooling.

@@vladpaloukotis Because the phone is only drawing that much power. Just because a power supply/adapter can supply up to 45 watts doesn’t mean that’s how much the load is. The charger is in the phone, not the power supply. The charging and power management circuitry will determine how much power it can send into the battery and how much it needs to run the phone (say, if you’re using the phone and charging the battery at the same time), and it will only draw that much power from the power supply. They're playing safe just like apple with higher wattage charging. Pumping more amps into a battery reduces battery life faster in the long term. Only use fast charging if you really have to.
@Jtwizzle10 ай бұрын
@MZRTMusic254 may be the case to an extent. Though that's playing really safe when competitors are 2-3x faster charging. Some even claim it won't effect longevity anymore than normal at those very fast charges
@MZRTMusic25410 ай бұрын
@Jtwizzle I'm yet to find evidence or research disproving that fast charging doesn't degrade battery life. I doubt the phone companies themselves would do it because they wouldn't make as much money advertising fast charging if it kills their batteries faster. The split battery method over higher charge input is a better choice. The tradeoff, though, is space, and that means you lose features. My sister used fast charging all the time for her Huawei phone. After 1½ years, the battery life reduced noticeably. That's fast degradation for a 5000mah battery. Normally, it would take 2 years, and even so, the degradation wouldn't be that noticeable. Even so I can't be 100% sure because there's too many factors to consider. I hope there's a breakthrough for batteries because that's what's holding back Mobile devices right now. Or at least that's what I think
@Jtwizzle10 ай бұрын
@MZRTMusic254 Yeah, to many factors. 1.5 years if used heavily, could be near 2 charge cycles a day. That could be a ~15% capacity loss right there. Keeping it at 100% for long periods and discharging it very low often are also not good. They generally claim that after 600-800 cycles, the battery will have 80% capacity left. I usually start to notice a drop in battery life after around a year, averaging 1 cycle a day. Definitely do need a breakthrough battery tech, hopefully soon !

I would recommend getting the FNB58 or Power-Z for measuring power consumption. The one you used is decent but not very accurate, at least according to the reviews I've read. Also, my phone supports 25w Max, but it rarely goes that high even when I'm charging from 0%. (I think Samsung likes to play it safe with charging speeds as well as Apple, unlike other brands. Faster charging speeds come at the cost of battery life too) It usually plays at 19-20W up until 60-70%, then it drops to 15-18w. At 90%, it ranges between 7-11w. At 95%, it drops to 5w. This is when I'm using a peltier cooler to keep the phone temperature at 30-33°C. Without the cooler, the wattage drops quicker at about 40-50% because the battery, CPU area, and the charging port area heat up significantly fast. CPU temperature gets to 40°C sometimes

Maintaining temp at 40C at 98w is excellent. My S24U reaches 40-41 at 25 watts itself. It sucks to charge it like this in 2024.
@Zyanide0910 ай бұрын
Wanted to see why my S24 Ultra charged so slowly, and at under 10% battery it charges at 40 watt and dips to 6 watt at 90% something. With a 10w charger it takes 6+ hours to charge, 24w its 2½-3 hours. But with a 45w with fast charge/dp it takes slightly over an hour.
@nich-ko6si10 ай бұрын
That 45w charger seemed to be overheating the device or its overheating itself. It kept going down to 15 watts. If it was consistent it would reach the 70s in 30 mins

I don't think you're taking into account. The adaptive chip in the individual charger is measuring the heat resistance in the cord. And throttling how many Watts it's actually charging. That could be different depending on the manufacturer
@LoverOfTech10 ай бұрын
What ever the reasons, 45w is still not worth it🥱

Cannot measure heat in the cord, but maybe just the connector temperature. I don't see that sensor exposed anywhere. For sure the battery temperature is a limiting factor.

Great video , This phones has been locked to their designated cables. I have Huawei p30 pro with 65w cable and charger , to my greatest surprise it's slower on my note 20 ultra compared to 25 Watts charger that comes with the phone. So the problem isn't the charger but the cable. If you have higher Watts charger you also need cables that your phone is compatible with.
@youzongliu10 ай бұрын
Cable can be designated? I thought they just handle different wattages, how can they be phone specific. I have a 100W cable, 45w & 25w charger feels about the same to me too

Thanks! 45w barely makes sense when just getting some quick boost. But maybe if you tried starting at 20% it would matter if you just need a boost? Dunno what heat limit they have set. 40c internal?

Same story as 5 years ago with the Note 10+ (which I currently replace by an S24U): Almost no difference in charging time when doing a complete charge (I think the diifference was 10 minutes). High Wattage can only be used if it is almost empty. But what I found astonishing were other things: 1. The Note 10+ never came even close to 45W. It maxed out at 35W and struggled to go above 30W. From the video I see that the S24U can go above 40W so this looks good to me 2. Even 25W could only be had with a special charger that can speak PPS. The 45/35W needed an even more rare PD PPS Power supply that can deliver above 3A (4A to be more precise - most Do PPS only below 3A, even if they have PD Profiles with 5A) and this also needs an active cable with an E-Marker Chip. If you use a "normal" PD Charger with fixed Profiles you are limited to 15W. I suspect this is the same with the S24U. So in reality the iphone often charges faster than the Samsung, because it can reach its 20W with any standard PD Charger or PC Port. 3. Fast charging only works with the screen off, so you cannot use it while fast charging. That can be a problem in car use. I wonder if that is the same for S24U. In reality the phone charges fast enough even with 25W - but the above limitations really are annoying (a suitable PPS Charger is hard to come by, for powerbanks it is very hard). EDIT: I have found a charging graph on the very good (though in german language) site: techtest.org/wie-schnell-laedt-das-samsung-galaxy-s24-ultra-und-welche-ladestandards-werden-unterstuetzt/ Here you can see that 45W are only reached for the first 5 minutes. Another 15 minutes at or above 30W and everything below the 23rd minute of charging are below 25W. I suspect that this is not related to the charging time per se but battery State of charge. So most of the time above 25W are never reached. EDIT No 2: Apparently Samsung got it right this time - Even with a standard PD Charger without PPS you can reach charging speeds of almost 25W (23W actually). So for the S24U you do not really need a fancy and rare PPS Charger anymore - that is a good thing and the most important Aspect IMHO. And I the other culprit is also gone now: You can happily charge fast with the screen on! My shiny new S24U currently charges with 32 Watts while the screen is on and using apps like e.g. gmail

I have an S24U and the cable has to be the right cable for it to work or it does the same thing to mine. I use an anker 240w cable now and it does not do what happend in the test. I also tried that plug that tests for wattage, it was crashing it. It would go to 35w and then skip a beat and go back to 0w then back to 25w and then get stuck at 15w. So you have to use battery guru to see charging speed.

The charging rate is influenced by the ambient temperature. Additionally, after reaching 50% charge, the charging rate decreases to approximately 12 watts on average. So , the 45 watt charger is useful when your battery is low , from 0 to 40%

You have not mentioned the USB C rating. You should choose a cable that has 5AMPS/20V rating to really check charging speed. Even a 5amps/10V rating would do nicely. In short, your cable is choked if using lower rated one - 45 watt charger is reads 4 amps while the 25w charger reads 5 amp cable. Another issue is that the phone could be restricting the current/voltage input so it is pointless to use 45watt charger as it can only accept a limited wattage. By the way, generally Samsung ultra limits charging to about 27w from 55 ot 60%, above that it charges at only 19w.
@mirecxx2210 ай бұрын
Why are you using USB Power Meter Testers for fast charging? In fast charging, it's important that the charger and USB cable are properly matched, as there's a small chip in the USB cable facilitating communication about specifications. Using a USB tester might interfere with this process.
@LoverOfTech10 ай бұрын
Of course I am using it to get the wattage reading in real time. If I don't then there will be people complaining and then when I do there is still people complaining 🤗
@mirecxx2210 ай бұрын
@@LoverOfTech I see, but in that case, it's better to use a power meter (in wall socket), even though it won't be entirely accurate, but it will give some estimate. ...or you should have used both variations (with and without the USB tester) during the testing.

I was looking at the power reader on the 45w charger, and at the beginning, it was only showing 41watts briefly for like the first 5-7 minutes, but soon after, it kept fluctuating a lot to well below 20w, and wasn't giving you a consistent charge. Wondering if it might be the device, cable, or charger. 30 minutes into the test, it was bouncing between 14-30watts and levelled off at 28-30watts and then just 20watts 45 minutes into the test and just 5watts when it was around an hour. I just used the same 45 watt charger, and used the same power meter device. My 25000mah power bank just charged from 20%-99% at a continuous 42watts and didn't drop until 99% in contrast
