It’s amusing how most KZbinrs fixate on the shape of this watch. Circle in square case, circle in cushion-shaped case, weird, bla bla bla . Yet, if you look at regular, real watches, there’s a plethora of different case shapes housing circular dials. Take Audemars Piguet, for instance - their iconic Royal Oak is breathtaking. It’s octagonal, yet still captivating. And then there are brands like Bvlgari, Patek Philippe, etc. There are thousands of cool-looking watches with non-round cases and circular dials. Just some food for thought!

I guess it’s just me. My only exposure to watches is through fitness watches. I was never really into mechanical stuff. So my basis of opinion is from the perspective of someone very familiar with Garmin, COROS, Polar, Suunto, etc… even the Apple Watch is a bit of a stretch for me. But yeah, just an opinion. I’m sure it’s an awesome watch and I’m excited to try it when mine arrives!

Dave the ring case has a battery in it and lasts for 1.5 chargings, so approximately 10 extra days. As for the new watch line up the new 3nm processor is a big.LITTLE type so it will be both frugal and powerful. The new optical BioActive sensor, if it indeed does work well, looks to bring some quite impressive features as it packs 13 leds, including yellow, blue, violet, and ultra-violet, in addition to an increased number of red, green and infrared leds previously used. Design wise the Ultra is a supersized rehash of the 2017 Gear Sport watch, minus the physical turning bezel that the Sport sported. Apart from nicer materials than the now alu bodied Watch 7, the Ultra doesn't really bring that much: the same size battery as the 2022 Pro 5 utilizes, which is about 40% larger than the regular 7's, and a static 10 ATM water resistance rating. Note that Samsung on their web page specifically say it's NOT FOR DIVING. So this is far worse than the AW Ultra in this respect. Finally neither the 7 nor the Ultra have a physical turning bezel, or a rotating button, which means in colder climates, like on that 9000 meter mountain, the gloves have to come off.

@@ChaseTheSummit if it shows accurate GPS and pace, it might be able to replace my Garmin. The Garmin will be superior for sport tracking and there's no way Samsung will catch up that much. In the past every time I have tried Samsung watches I either return them or sell them. Hopefully I get similar feelings for it like when I loved the Apple watch Ultra. I would just use Apple watch Ultra if it wasn't for liking Android more.

There’s so much to talk about in this video about this watch and we just sort of gloss over how big of an impact something like this watch and the ring working together can make on the wearables industry. To just say this watch is ugly, then to say that anything over 1k nits is just overkill, then the processing power is overkill? Idk, I think Garmin will have its hands full trying to keep market share in this environment if it doesn’t do something about its products and its pricing especially, and that’s probably the biggest takeaway of all.

Having a watch and ring work together has already been done by Amazfit. Check out the Amazfit Helio ring and Zepp ecosystem. It's literally the same thing. It's a cool feature though and I'm glad Samsung adopted it. I approach these devices from a sport/fitness perspective where 3000 nits and fast CPU's are in fact overkill. I think most of us would prefer 5+ days of battery life rather than a blindingly bright display when 1000 nits is more than adequate!

Kinda strange that they're using the power saving modes as their "battery spec" when most folks likely won't use it like that. We'll have to wait and see how the battery holds up but I suspect it will be near identical to the Apple Watch Ultra in most situations. 2-3 days of typical use, 15-17 hours in GPS with full accuracy, 5ish days in power save mode. We'll see!

Someone needed to make an ultra for android users and I'm glad samsung did it without pricing it higher than the apple ultra. this watch won't be the reason anyone switches over to android but now that it's present it's absence will also not be a reason android users switch over. I think they made a huge miss with not having the circular bezel not physically rotate. I know they save that for the classic series but if it's ultra i think it deserves to have all the bells and whistles.

I quite like the look of it. Reminds me of a Panerai, not that I own one of those. I’m an Apple user, so I’m never buying one, but hats off to Samsung for doing something interesting. And the price seems more reasonable too, so putting some pressure on that is also good. The ring is cool. No surprise Samsung beat Apple to doing it. What a shock. Of course if Apple did a ring I’d consider it 😂. If garmin did a ring I’d almost definitely buy it, then I wouldn’t have to wear a massive watch in bed. Come on garmin. Catch up.

I ordered the grey one. I think you are correct that it isn't the most attractive design. However, I don't plan on using it as a dress watch. It is a fitness watch and therefore I only care about accuracy, functionality, and ruggedness. How it looks is not my top priority.

The brightness is due to sapphire glass being diffuse. It requires a higher brightness to overcome it. Gorilla glass doesn't suffer from this.

Not completely accurate. The Garmin Epix , Suunto Race, and several other AMOLED watches feature a sapphire lens and only have 1000 nit displays that are easily viewable in bright conditions 🤷‍♂️

@@ChaseTheSummitYou need to see them side by side. It is very accurate. Apple doesn’t use a pure sapphire lens, so that doesn’t count. Samsungs first entry into sapphire was the ultra a few years ago. It only had 1000 nits and couldn’t be seen out doors. With sapphires being diffuse, colors are also not as punchy. It has a lot to due with reflections. Gorilla glass is less shiny than sapphire and better at blocking reflections.

I wouldn't say the design is ugly, different from the usual smartwatch perhaps. The design reminds me of panarai watches and there are people who like that type of watch. This watch would perhaps appeal to a large number of people imo. I would disagree that smartwatches need not be fast. It would irritate me if the smartwatch i am using is laggy, same as the handphone i use. We have grown so used to fast and responsive systems and i think it will be hard to go back to slower and laggy products.

I don’t like the ultra at all . I still have mi Garmin forerunner 965, but i also have 2 galaxy watch 6 44mm. I une the first one for a full 24h tracking. In the morning, i’put it on charge, take the second one and do the same. So I have 365 days a years of battery life 😂. I will probably do the same with the 7.

Be interesting how this is. Do be careful if you don't use it mich after the first review though. Arun/mrwhosetheboss has a video about how all the Samsung devices have huge battery issues if they stop getting used. Like, disconcertingly many devices with swollen batteries, when no other brand, android or otherwise, has such a consistent problem. Fwiw, that's enough for me to not want the devices. Great to see rings getting more widespread, without subscription no ness, though!

Did you know that Samsung used the name Ultra and used the titanium in there Galaxy Watch 5 Ultra, and this was before the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra 1? This means that Apple copied Samsung first.

Not at all, in fact my daily watch is typically a Garmin, or COROS device. I like apple products though. I also have a Galaxy Watch Ultra on pre-order. Hopefully I like it more in person!

Totally subjective obviously, as a guy entrenched in the Apple system, and contemplating switching, I kind of feel like the Apple watch's square design is on the feminine side. I actually prefer this shape, to me it's more masculine. I would completely understand a women saying they don't care for the design, compared to Apple. To each their own, I'm just glad to see Samsung offering Apple some competition in the ultra market, that's a win for consumers.

i totally thought it was but masculine and to a degree Samsung probably assumes the same since they only have a M/L band size but i saw a girl review the white on white and I could see a lot of ladies who don't mind big bling want to sport it for the looks. the chrome circular bezel makes it shine a bit

Coming from the Apple watch Ultra and then the Galaxy 6 Classic, the Galaxy Ultra is the perfect mix. Pics and Vids dont do it justice. I've had the gray titanium for two days and the "squircle" definitely grows on you. I'm more impressed with the responsiveness and battey life. Navigating through the UI is almost as smooth as Apple and can easily go 2-3 days on heavy use.

To me, the Samsung Watch Ultra looks like a copied Apple Watch Ultra where the copier got the sheet stuck. I have also ordered it for testing and am excited to see how it performs.

The Watch 7 looks nice. The Ultra, on the other hand, is ugly. All Apple Watches are ugly too, absolutely hate that bulky square/rectangle look.

I concur that this watch is quite unattractive. My preference leans away from square watches, and my fondness for Galaxy watches stems from their round shape, which resembles a traditional watch rather than a miniature tablet on the wrist.
