I've done this in the past with identical VCRs - each had separate, different problems (including physical damage to casing and boards). 3 Panasonic Hi-Fi stereo 6-head LP VCRs came my way once - all the same model (I believe they were NV-HD620 Mk2 with G-Code made in Japan around 1998 - nice little silver coloured units) - I made one complete working VCR out of the 3 - it not only looked good, but performed perfectly. I got to keep the 2 buggered machines and the 1 good one I rebuilt went back to the guy who brought the 3 to me (for a small fee). I've also done it with a couple of old colour TV sets - years ago - the workshop I was with at the time called it "reconditioning" - not just replacing a picture tube or a board - but right down to cosmetics - replacing front panels, switches, back covers, etc. Thanks for sharing this video. It's a good idea to salvage any undamaged parts from the donor machines and use for later if you need them for similar projects.

I wish Id come accross your page earlier- Im a 'experimenter' and ill fix most things, but you go the extra mile and show some great tips as how it should be done and some of the less-orthodox DIY tricks- which amatures like me thrive on with limited test equipment and no proffessional knowledge- just years of fixing stuff that broke in the house/car etc. Brilliant! I loved the surface-mounted chip repalcemnt!

Less orthodox tricks? No these are tricks of the trade that every professional tech learns after years in the business. When you run a busy shop you look for ways to save time, as saving time means more units out the door, and more unit off the bench and out the door means more money in your pocket. In my prime, I was bring in about 175,000 a year in repair revenue to the shop, and a sizable portion of that was going in my pocket. Back in the 80's and 90's where the average wage was perhaps 30K a year we were making 75-80K a year. Those were the good old days, when VCRs were popular, and video stores ruled home entertainment. An average day for me was 10 VCRs. Out of those 10 5 would be cleaning only, 30.00 (15 in my pocket) the other 5 would have some mechanical or electrical problem, 60 - 85.00. (30-40 in my pocket) 3 TVs @ 100.00 (50 for me). So an average day, About 375 before taxes every day. Some days were slower so lets say 350 a day. About 7000 a month, 84,000 a year. That was my average for probably 15 of the 20 years I was in the repair business.

Genius - Fantastic job. The VCRs before was in this Chinese repair store and I only pulled out chassis and check belt on only one VCR. It wasn't there in all of three VCRs how I found from this video. I couldn't find any, buy the new one. I got one VCR for free from my friend which was probably fell with broken board. The Chinese repair shop stole pulleys and other missing parts from all VCRs. I apologize 12voltvids and everybody who put any 23 comments under this video. I knew ahead the 2 VCRs was junk, but I only brought for parts. I am sorry to everybody who will watch this video

Exactly. I had an old Panasonic AGW1 but it is pretty much toast. Won't do anything, capacitors leaking everywhere. If I was still getting lots of PAL tapes to convert I would probably try to fix it, but the truth is I might see 1 or 2 PAL tapes a year, and my old Hitachi multi system machine still plays OK, and my stand alone PAL-NTSC converter does a super job, so I just do it that way. Don't get many conversions now. In the 80's and 90's I had a half dozen tapes a day to transfer. Lots of home videos for people to share with family across the pond. Did transfers to pal and from pal. Now days though there is nothing. Nobody uses tape anymore, even DVD is on the way out.

Video tapes of the vhs kind were never a good way to keep recordings, but by the time i bought a vcr there was no other system. Betamax was better but not the common system. Vhs was very common, and crap, home movies and holidays were recorded on vhs, and marrages often made it to super vhs. Dvds are not dead yet, trying to protect newer forms of storage from pirates would be a pain, so shops sell dvds. Even though i stopped watching tv years ago (utter crap), i keep the old jvc hr3320 piano key video, or gut buster as i know it :-D

@plesio2830
@plesio2830 6 жыл бұрын
12voltvids didn't play any SECAM video, he played PAL video. The SECAM video wasn't only in French it was in all Eastern Europe, but French SECAM is different than Easten Europe. French SECAM has nobody else only France and maybe French former colonies. Color noise it comes probably from digital converter in VCR, because the converter is not perfect you know South Korea in this time was not very good compare today is much better.
@12voltvids

That tape was PAL. It may well have originated in SECAM, and was converted to PAL. There were 6 different flavours of video, based on 4 systems. NTSC PAL, PAL M, PAL N, MESCAN and SECAM. The 3 flavors of PAL is because Brazil and Argentina use different versions. Most PAL uses a 4.43 color carrier frequency, and operates in a 625 / 50 field world. One of them ( thing i t was pal M uses a 3.58 carrier for color, and the other PAL N was a 525 / 60 version with a 4.43 color carrier) Then there are the 2 SECAM formats. The french were all on their own, and the ONLY VCR that I know of that did the french SECAM was the Panasonic AGW1. The other secam was called MESECAM, which stod for Middle East SECAM, which all the other SEcAM countries used. This machine will output a SECAM signal, but not one compatable with french TVs. I actually have a multi system TV, I should haul out just for fun. I bought it many moons ago, and it was probably 800.00 for a little 14" set. I had it because I needed to verify quality checks when I was making tapes in PAL or SECAM/MESECAM. This little JVC TV will receive / decode PAL, SECAM, NTSC and NTSC 4.43 which is essentially an NTSC tape playing on a modified PAL recorder. That broken deck, the one with the missing parts on the transport, I am quite sure I can get that to work as a systems converter so I can demonstrate and play with the multi sysstem TV on a future video.

Very skillful video. Thanks. Mine does play PAL well (showing onto my USB capture which can capture both PAL and NTSC and has no need for conversion) but when I play other type of PAL or NTSC on SV-5000W it shows black and white and very bad (only part of screen showing some bad picture and rest is really bad). What could be the problem? Ground contacts helped with minor snow but not any more. All transistors look not popped but I have to still voltmeter them. Thanks

These units seem to hold up to punishment in the main, and they still fetch a tidy sum on eBay. I managed to get hold of one in a batch of broken stuff (mostly DVD players but I got a HDD/DVD recorder and a fairly new LG Blu-Ray) from a pawn shop for £5 for about 8 pieces of kit. There's a 1000uF cap which seems to always fail on these in the power supply which was causing it to fail to boot up, and the mode switch needed a clean but that was it. Must get round to selling it on. I don't think the guy in the store realised what he had.

Yep station240 - Sometime those smaller bags even go inside other bigger bags, stored inside machines. That helps pre-sort a BIG pile of parts when reassembling the unit, maybe several months later... They help contain that greasy gizmo nicely, just watch out for static discharge damage with sensitive electronics.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to take heat for this one... Because we are smart enough to figure out which plug goes in which socket. BTW that is called a SCART connector. It passes audio and video, and some types pass S video or RGB.. It makes plugging a VCR into a TV simple, but also can limit the way things are connected.

Does the head drum runs slower with a pal tape?
@plesio2830
@plesio2830 6 жыл бұрын
no only speed of tape is different
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
Yes head drum runs slower in PAL and SECAM. NTSC runs 1800 RPM, and PAL is 1500 RPM It is based on the frame rate. Head rotates 1 revolution for each frame (2 fields) 30 frames x 60 seconds is 1800 RPM. PAL and SCAM is a 25 frame system, so 25 frames x 60 seconds = 1500 RPM. This is why VHS quality on PAL and SECAM is lower than NTSC. Only about 200 lines resolution as opposed to 240 for NTSC because the drum speed is slower and thus the writing speed lower. Lower writing seed means less information to tape.

PAL vs. NTSC PAL usually has 576 visible lines compared with 480 lines with NTSC, meaning that PAL has a 20% higher resolution, in fact it even has a higher resolution than Enhanced Definition standard (854x480).[citation needed] Most TV output for PAL and NTSC use interlaced frames meaning that even lines update on one field and odd lines update on the next field. Interlacing frames gives a smoother motion with half the frame rate. NTSC is used with a frame rate of 60i or 30p whereas PAL generally uses 50i or 25p; both use a high enough frame rate to give the illusion of fluid motion. This is due to the fact that NTSC is generally used in countries with a utility frequency of 60 Hz and PAL in countries with 50 Hz, although there are many exceptions.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
You are confusing scanning lines with horizontal resolution. Horizontal resolution determines how much detail a picture will contain and it is based on 1 scanning line. PAL has 576 active scanning lines in a piicture where as NTSC has 480 scanning lines. Remember horizontal detail is based on a single line. Scanning lines is the vertical resolution. Yes PAl has higher vertical resolution, but at a slower frame rate, 50 fields vs 60. In a field rate, which you have to consider as we are talking interlaced video, there are 288 lines in a PAL field vs 240 lines in a vertical field. 2 fields make a frame, but because movement takes place between fields, we look at a single field as the resolution for analog video. At 1500 rpm, the head to tape speed limits the horizontal resolution on PAL/SECAM to less that 200 lines. Typically between 190 and 200 depending on tape quality. So 200 lines horizontal resolution 288 lines vertical resolution. NTSC because of the higher drum speed is about 240 lines horizontal resolution on a 240 line field. Therefore an NTSC VHS tape will look better than a PAL VHS tape. Open broadcast is totally different. The NTSC system was limited to about 4.2MHz bandwidth which would deliver about 360 lines of horizontal resolution over a broadcast transmitter because of the audio carrier at 4.5MHz. PAL in many countries used a 6.5MHz audio carrier so the horizontal resolution was closer to 500 lines. NTSC analog satellite also used a 6.2/6.8MHz audio carrier, and the horizontal resolution on those signals was around 500 lines as well. Enter digital video. The Spec for digital video on the NTSC system is 720x480 pixels. EDTV for NTSC is even higher, 852x480 pixels. All the first generation plasma and LCD screens were based on the EDTV platform, including those sold in europe. So they were downscaling the 576 received lines to 480 because the panels were fixed count, so you couldn't just squeeze in more lines. PAL digital video specificion was 720x576 but many consumer cameras did not record as such. Most recorded 720x480, and just scaled the analog video output to the PAL equivalent on output. Recently I bought a used camera off craigslist. The guy didn't tell me it was a European camera and I only figured it out when I went to edit, and my editor complained because the file was written in 25 frame mode. When I put the camera in HD it was 1920x1080 50i when I put it down to SD it was 720 x 480 50i. There was no way to use this camera in conjunction with my 60i 30p cameras. It had settings for 50i 25p only. So I kept the spare battery, and sold it for the same price I paid to some other unsuspecting fool that probably won't know any different until he wants to edit his video and burn the contents to a DVD. Then he will figure out that the frame rate is different and most domestic DVD players will reject the resulting disk because it will be identified as a pal source, even though PAL and NTSC don't exist in the digital domain.

Ah yes. That was the joke. 50.00 per hour, 75, if you watch, 100 if you help. We had a sign that hung in the shop I used to work in that said that. It is bad enough figuring out what blew up, but when you have to figure out what someone else fu**ed up in addition to what blew up... I cut the scene, but on one of these units, magic smoke flew out of one of them when I plugged it in. Perhaps a future video. I'll call it when the fit hits the shan. How does that sound. On 1 of the 3 units the one that has a crack in the board, I guess after moving it one of the traces shorted, as it did power up, and then one of the caps in the power supply let go with a big cloud of smoke and my comment was, that's not good. I pulled the board and noticed a crack across it. How it worked for a couple of minutes is beyond me.

yep i know all about i did alot of service calls to replace stk ic's in rear projection tv's when i lived in ontario atleast 15 years ago now had one set guy tried to replace stk himself, damaged the traces, shorted out b+ to the ic with solder blob and killed the voltage for that, so i repaired the damage and whole time guy was looking over my should i said a few words under my breath after i left that day, and guy got a big bill

I had one goof watch me fix his big screen tv. When he questioned the charges and asked for a break down of the charges I got cute. Part cost 42.55. Service call charge 40.00. Labour to replace part 20.00. Knowing which part to replace 100.00. He wasn't impressed.
