@@frankreynolds9930 yea tho, just got curious what the measurement count of that config would be 128.2 mm x 159.2 mm (sc: Samsung's Official webpage for the device) Horizontal x Hinge wise (Thickness not counted here) Currently Samsung delivers the ZFold 2 with these dimensions: 2X 64.1 mm x 159.2 mm sides (Unfolded, then if split equally) If we apply the proposal of the other way around fold: 2X 79.6 mm x 128.2 mm sides (Unfolded, then if split equally) Though when folded the current ZFold 2 has a 68 mm span horizontally and that messed my brain up lol I thought "hey isn't it supposed to be 64.1 mm" before realizing the immovable hinge, so yeah 79.6 mm compared to what's now 64.1 mm, noticeable difference

i beg to differ. A couple of years ago Samsung was already working on the technology, and while it feels like a big jump from what was 5 years ago (iPhone 7 time? Not a year away from the X), nobody would actually think “no way that’s 5 years into the future”, something valid in the case of more abstract concepts like flying cars, time machines, teleportation thingies, mcd’s ice cream machines that don’t break, etc. The rate of development is, of course, only accelerating, but that’s been the case for most of modern history, so I think by this time most people have gotten used to that the next 5 years will feature far more development than the last 5.

Your suggested aspect ratio would work perfectly on the inside. However, the outside screen would be considered too wide for a one-handed device as many have complained about the Surface Duo. There might also be issues with fitting the phone in most pockets.

I had the Fold2 since launch day. One of the things I like the most, is the narrowness, when folded, because you can put it in the pocket way easier than a Note 10+ for example (my previous phone). But I agree, that the front screen would be better with the other aspect ratio. maybe except when using the phone one handed.

I’m definitely going through S-Pen with drawls, but that’s the ONLY thing I miss. I’ve had a Note since the Note 1, so this was a big change going to the Z Fold 2, but I can wholeheartedly say I’m in LOVE LOVE LOVE with my Z Fold 2. I know 100% that I can not go back to a standard cellphone 📱. I work in a phone store and a part of my soul is now just so sad 😞 touching these basic cellphones 😂 Now as for folding the phone 📱 the other way I don’t agree but you would need wider pockets. I actually like the narrow build, it makes one handed use a lot easily plus I never feel like I’m going to drop it because my hand can go around it easier.

NGL, but if they made it the width of a 21:9, 20:9, 19:9, or 18:9 (17:9 is edging on too wide and 16:9 is too far) phone, you get: -bigger battery -more comfortable holding -wider screen -better flex mode typing -better multitasking -could also make phone halves thinner, by a little, to improve pocketability. Hope they make the ZFold3 wider.

I think he meant the phone should be wider (and maybe less tall), similar to Surface Duo. When you open it, you would be in "landscape mode". The crease would still be horizontal.

I agree that the two displays are a but awkward, but changing the orientation of the hinge as you mentioned will make the phone wide and thick, which defeats the purpose of this foldable phone in particular they csn just redesign it with a better aspect ratio on both sides, still it won't be perfect,but it can't be without the help of app devs

Your argument makes complete sense, like even for tablets in general most of the time you just use them in landscape and that’s just because as screen size increases the use case moves away from one-hand, thumb-input, phone uses to landscape desktop-like uses. I’m on a 12.9 ipad pro as my main computer and if I had to fold it in half, I would fold it horizontally by the vertical center on landscape mode, not the other way around like, what use does that thin aspect ratio has??

You are forgetting one big thing in Haweii fold the display is outside so dropping it means an almost certain breaking of the a very very expensive glass also foldable glass or polymer will always be softer and thus will be prone to scratches as we can not put a screenguard.

Spen never with the type of foldable screen they making spen will put permanent mark on the screen when u scribble as there is some thin soft plastic sheet which the call as auto healing membrane but it is not. Unless they make something like glass tough and foldable spen is not possible

What you said makes sense but I think it was not done because of pocketability. The phone is already extremely thick, I think the last thing Samsung wants is for the phone to be thick AND wide. For the outer screen, for someone who’s used the Sony Xperia 1 for a year, I think 21:9 looks fine really and have no issues. For the inner screen, you can just rotate it and use it like that.

I think a sliding screen phone (as in you have a single screen that can expand by pulling on it) are a better form factor because you don't need extra screens or strange aspect ratios. You can use it just like a normal phone then you can stretch it out and use it just like a normal tablet. The sliding mechanism would be even more annoying to design than a though so I get why we're not seeing them yet.

I"ve been using the Fold 2 for almost 5 months now as my daily driver. It is a good phone. I use the outer screen more than the unfolded screen. I totally agree with you about the aspect ratio and it would be better with two landscape screens vs two portrait screens. The only other negative issue, IMO is the phone is a bit thick and chunky. I would like to see it slimmed down more and lose some weight in the next version.

One of my absolute favorite things about this formfaktor is something ridiculously spesific to me and probably very few other people..... This device is one of the probably best smartphones for retro gaming. In the landscape folded out position, the screen is super close to 4:3 making retro games look absolutely great, it has a massive screen compared to any handhelds for this use case, and get one of those controllers that stretch out to fit tablets and you would have the ultimate retro gaming handheld in your pocket at all times

I think the best hinge arrangement would be a trifold. It would be a regular aspect ratio for a phone when closed, and when fully opened, it would be a large regular aspect ratio tablet. It's a win-win. The only drawback is thickness, but I think there could be a way to work around that.

I've been saying this from the start. Use the A4 paper aspect ratio, because its aspect ratio is consistent when folded over. Just a tad wider in phone mode, and just about right in tablet mode.

On top of landscape, here's an even crazier idea: When folded, have the screens facing out. Explanation: 1. Resources can be diverted from going to the back camera to the selfie camera. Could have a really good ~16MP main ultrawide and a ~120MP used together to compensating for each other's lackings; for distance; and just the 120MP for telephoto. Only need 2 cameras. If they're different, you can do everything inbetween (assuming your machine learning software is good enough). 2. When taking a picture of someone, they can see themselves in the phone. 3. No need for a 2nd display, making the phone *much* **MUCH** cheaper and thinner. 4. When closed, the curve of the screen is much less extreme, potentially making the display easier/cheaper to produce. You'd have a phone that's, instead of £1800, about £1200 (or instead of ~$1000, about $400, in 'Murican), and it would have a better camera!

I've said from the start that it folds on the wrong axis. If Sammy aren't careful another manufacturer will beat them to it. Even their 2012 futuristic folding phone advert had it fold on landscape.

You have a very good point. It seems way better if they fold the other way around. But something that comes to my mind is, how wide would they end up being when closed, making it a problem to fit on most pockets?
