Hi Sam! great to see a P38 being brought back to life. I am doing a simmilar thing. Last summer I found a P38 with 110k original miles (180km). It had sat for 12 years in a shed before I got it. So far you have done all of the things that had to be done on mine. So I`ll just give you my opinion on the overheating. If the air bleed does not work, I`m afraid that youl have to do a head gasket change. I did everything but that as I dreaded the job. Changed the waterpump (has brittle wings and they tend to go), put on a new thermostat, change the radiator etc. It did not overheat when maintaining city speeds or idling, but once I got on a motorway for a couple of hours it overheated (once the gasket was pulled off, it had about 2/3 of a milimetre rip in one of the cilindre chanels). Everyone I knew who had worked on these cars told me to do the head gasket and I should have listened. Would have been cheaper and faster. Aperantly the gaskets on these engines are made of an asbestos composite and they go within 10 years, especially if the car has sat. Once the gasket was done, all is fine. With the overheating that is of course :D So as it most likely will have to be done anyways, I recomend to do it asap as the heads on these engins can warp pretty easilly and mine had to be polished/sanded down to level. Sorry for spelling mistakes, not a native speaker

Hi Sam, just wanted to say I enjoy and look forward to your videos, doubt I will ever get a Range Rover but you never know. It's just good to see normal maintenance jobs on normal cars. I am just restoring a 85 Corvette and did a cooling system drain, flush and refill yesterday with new hoses, these are also notoriously difficult to bleed the air out as the radiator is below the top of the engine.

Hi Sam enjoying your series on the P38 has helped me with some of the jobs I've had to do on mine. As you have said the battery has to have a good belt to spin the BMW engine over so I have brought a small sola panel and connected it direct to my battery still in place on the car and that helps to keep it topped up when not in use 👍

Always park the drivers side of the car higher than the passenger side, this helps bleed the old girl. One mod you can do is change the radiator bleed pipe that goes back to the tank. The later models had a more level pipe that went straight to the tank. For the battery get a Hankook mf31-1000. It wakes the while car up😎

I think there should be as many ways to fix each owner as there are p38s. Even dealers have their own way of fixing things. I think it is the p38's way to waste many liters of coolant. Unfortunately, I think you have a future of fixing leaks from your heater core. That is also how you try to enjoy p38.

Did you mix antifreeze with De mineralized water as tap water can be very acidic that's what causes pin holes in steel Brass alloy copper I've seen it so many times idiots putting tap water in cooling systems even just to top up with a little bit is a Big no no . Buy pre mix then what you have left you can top up with that , ps if you need to flush do it with de mineralized water about 18 ltrs should do it

Good one Sam, always been nervous about coolant systems, but looks quite simple really..think I need to add a topdon to the tool kit. Which bottle jack do you use for the L322? Got a service to do on L322 next week, seems I've only done 5k in the last 12 months! Will probably just keep to a simple oil and filter change this year. Up in Suffolk camping this weekend, filled the boot to the top!! Best long distance machine, cooled seats are great during a heatwave!

Hi Sam, always enjoy following your projects. I was wondering if you know of a battery starter/booster such as you used for 24 volt starting. I would like to get one for my Diesel LandCruiser.
@SamsMotors
@SamsMotors 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers! That's a good question actually - the only one I know of is made by Noco, but it's a super heavy duty one designed for starting HGVs, so it's really expensive. A quick Google search shows there are a few other models out there but they all seem to be very heavy duty compared with most 12v ones. I didn't realise some Land Cruisers used 24V starting. I've seen a few with twin battery setups but even those are still 12V.

@@SamsMotors Thanks for your reply Sam. I have had four diesel LandCruisers and they all have 24 volt starting after which all the electrics run on 12 volts. I'm not too sure but I think it maybe something to do with the high compression of the 4.2 motor they use. Keep up the good work Sam

Hi Sam, just a quick question regarding radiators in general. So I’ve had a new radiator fitted and coolant topped up to recommend level. Have noticed that after allowing to cool after a long run the level is dropping around 1mm each time I’ve had car up to temperature so after 2 weeks since new radiator was fitted I find the level has dropped by 20mm from recommended level?? No sign of any leaks , any suggestions please

Isn't the point of the lock on filler funnel to keep it fitted until up to temp so thermostat opens and it then tops up the revealed empty areas - you removed it to early here?

Yeah you can do - I prefer to put the cap back on and allow the system to build the normal pressure, then top up if necessary when the stat opens. I used this to get a head of pressure above the tank to help the initial bleeding.
