I mean, back in the day this happened with the PS2 consoles, the vertical stand was sold as a separate, optional accessory for the console, although most people didn't care about it and heating issues were nowhere as serious as they are now. Sony imo is kind of worse than Apple in some ways. Like making the playstation vision unusable on its own, and can only connect to playstation branded headphones and earphones. Apple accessories are often unecessarily expensive, but at least they let you use them how you want once you buy it.

But the fact is - you don’t want to stand it upright: it’ll die after a couple of years if you do; lay it sideways (which is what the stand is for that Sam holds throughout the video) so it won’t die 👍 Edit - I’ve realised I should have said it could die if you do and not “it’ll die if you do” - I’ve just re-read and seen how what I had said gets in the way of what I was trying to say: I don’t think for a second that if you stand it up for 2 years it will then die; the way I’ve written it my original post suggests I do think that. I’m meaning to say that there is a chance it could die and, as I’ve paid so much for it, I want it to last as long as possible; to maximise the chances of it lasting as long as possible I’m standing it up so that the possibility of the liquid metal running down the system is negated entirely so I don’t even have to think about it anymore. Had I not known about the issue at all I would have stood it up and, possibly, one day it could have broken due to something that I could have prevented, had I known about the problem. OR Nothing would have happened and I’d have been none the wiser. I’m really happy to hear that people have stood them up for their entire usage and never had an issue, that’s brilliant - similarly people who got xbox’s that didn’t get the ring of death; good for them - all I’m trying to say is that there is a risk and to negate the risk entirely, lay it down. 🙏🙌☀️

@@mitsuhh yeah, so after about 2 years of standing upright (and potentially everyday use?) the thermal paste on the CPU has been heated up so much that it starts to drip out from the CPU and, if stood vertically, drips down the hardware of the machine, short circuiting the console. However, if led on its side, the thermal paste just pools on itself and doesn’t go anywhere. Not a massively common issue buuuut… if you want your machine to last as long as possible, lay it on its side with the stand that comes with it. It’s a shame: I prefer it stood up; but there’s been enough reports for it to be a problem that can be avoided by it being on its side 🤷‍♂️🙃 the more you know and all that 🙏✌️
