In this video, I will show you how to paint a dramatic seascape and all the ingredients you need to create such a painting. I show you how to paint a dramatic breaking wave, white water in the foreground, rocks, spills and sea spray. I show you how you can paint light in a seascape in a way that creates a sense of tension (in a good way) and mystery.
This tutorial takes you through 5 Steps towards creating a mountain painting that includes:
1. Composition
2. Blocking in the painting
3. Building up the detail
4. Refining the painting
5. Final details
This artwork was painted using oils but you could also paint this in acrylics too.
If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy/use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

Watch less and paint more. Good art is the outcome of some talent + a huge amount of dedication. Which means you have to paint every day as long as you can. Watching 10,000 videos will just teach you a few basics. Art is spend time doing it, not watching others do it

Jackie Garroutte yes, I do. As far as I’m concerned, the problem when I started was to learn about value. I painted dozens of paintings in scales of greys. To use colours is the easiest part. It just takes time experimenting. Another thing that will help the inexperienced painter is to use a very limited palette. The more colours, the trickiest to not have muddy colours as the result of mixing.

Absolutely beautiful seascape! You are the best teacher I have seen. I am a retired elementary school teacher and one of the most important lessons I was taught by my professors was,” Never assume your students already know something. Don’t skip steps.” You seem to have mastered this concept. You include information that many seem to skip. Thanks so very much for using your wonderful gift and sharing so generously. You also have a gift for teaching. God bless you, always.

I've been using watercolour for around 40 years and am now going into oil, as I should have too many years ago. Finally I've discovered somebody who not only speaks English but efficiently conveys everything you need to know or look further into. Also, your painting is in a style that I like and is not too far away from my approach and choice of subject. I forgot to buy lamp black in the shop yesterday so was pleased you don't use it. I tend toward ultramarine and b. umber, not much call for black in my world. So I will be watching everything you put up and, if it's no bother, may ask for snippets of advice from time to time. Many many thanks.
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob, I'm glad you like my videos. With regards to black I never used pre made black as it deadens the colours. It's better I think to mix your own black using something like ultramarine blue and burnt umber, also as I use these colours throughout my paintings anyway, they colours are more harmonious and cohesive as the painting contains common colours. Feel free to email if you would like any advice with your paintings: art@samuelearp.com

Hi Sam, Fantastic Seascape. I am looking to get my first oil paints and will be using Windsor and Newton Alkyds but they don't have Yellow oxide or cobalt teal, what alternatives would be a close match or what colours would i need to mix them. Many thanks.
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can use yellow ochre instead of yellow oxide they are pretty similar in colour, or alternatively you can make your own with cadmium yellow, cadmium red, ultramarine blue and titanium white. You'll need to mix it as a neutral brown / grey first then start adding titanium white and reintroducing yellow and red until you get your mixture right. With regards to cobalt teal, it's not an essential colour and I haven't been using it as much lately, but you can make something similar with ultramarine blue, phthalo green and titanium white. I've been simplifying my palette lately but here is a list of colours which I'd recommend you buy which you can pretty much paint any landscape and seascape with, these colours should be easily available: Titanium white Burnt sienna Yellow ochre (or yellow oxide) Cadmium yellow Cadmium red Alizarin crimson (or perylene crimson) Ultramarine blue Phthalo green Thats pretty much all you'd need, cadmium orange can be useful on your palette for efficiency but you can mix orange with yellow and red. I hope this helps :)

Just came upon this in the nick of time. I'm doing a master study of Frederick Judd Waugh and this helped a great deal. Thanks very much for a great video. Take care.

Great video Samuel! Did you use any medium after the sketching phase?
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 5 жыл бұрын
I seem to remember when my sketches were complete I got straight into the painting, but normally I do a colour study of if possible a plein air study first especially if I’m doing a larger painting 😊

Thank you very much for your answer Samuel! But it's not exactly what I was asking... English is not my first language so it's probably my fault. I wanted to know if after the sketching phase you use colour straight from the tube or you add some medium like oil, turpentine, liquin or stuff like that.

This seascape is beautiful! It looks very challenging and a bit overwhelming. I may try it on a small canvas, and definitely take my time. I paint in acrylics and sometimes oils. I appreciate that you break each mixture of colours down. It's helping me a lot. Thank you!
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Isabela, yeah try painting it on a smaller canvas, the advantage you have using acrylics is that they don't take long to dry, so if you make a mistake you can just paint over it.

Thanks Cristy, yeah I love painting seascapes too, you can create some really dramatic and beautiful paintings. I love sharing what I know and like you I'm still learning to paint, people have helped me with my painting so I help other artists with their painting. Stay tuned for the next video which I am editing at the moment :)

Awesome painting and demo! And thanks for the detailed information about mixing colours. Can it be painted with acrylics, and what if we don't have all the colours and brushes?
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 4 жыл бұрын
Yes of course, absolutely. All my painting tutorials are suitable for oils and acrylics. You can create a lot of paintings that communicate depth even with a limited palette. Check out my KZbin video on mixing colour and using a limited palette 🙂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZy4mnmQjsqIrKM

Can I apply this technique for Acrylic seascape painting...?
@SamuelEarpArtist
@SamuelEarpArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Subham, yes you can apply this painting lesson to acrylics as the principles of colour mixing and tone is the same. You just need to be mindful that acrylics dry much quicker than oils.
@carolhalpin197

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing. Different picture but now I can move forward with more ease using your common sense palette. Acrylics are a bugger for sure but it is totally possible Subham mondal. I just moved and my acrylics are more accessible.
