Continuing with the theme of painting mountains, in this video I will show you how to paint this mountain landscape painting which I created in my studio.
This tutorial takes you through 5 Steps towards creating a mountain painting that includes:
1. Composition
2. Blocking in the painting
3. Building up the detail
4. Refining the painting
5. Final details
This mountain landscape is inspired by Mt Talbot and Mt Crosscut which is located in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.
This artwork was painted using oils but you could also paint this in acrylics too.

I also do sketches but also helps me with values. I then do small painting. When happy I do the main painting. I had a customer that thought she had a right to my sketches and small painting since it was her vacation pictures. Who owns my sketches? Great video as always.

Hey, glad the video helped. Yeah, getting your tones and values right can be difficult which is why I think it’s a good idea to paint your darks in first. It then makes establishing the highlights in afterwards much easier.

Thanks Michelle, Andrew helped and mentored me with my art work a few years ago so at the time I painted this I was definitely using a similar palette to Andrew as these colours are great for landscapes. Lately I have been simplifying and using a more limited palette especially as I spend a lot of time plein air painting and using fewer colours is easier and gives you a better understanding of colour theory. You actually don't need to use many colours in painting and you can create amazing beautiful landscapes with just a few colours.
