The Valkyries were actually quite repulsive. They weren't the beautiful maidens that rewarded warriors who fell in battle with a place in Odin's hall. The word Valkyrie means "chooser of the slain" meaning they chose who died on the battlefield and how as Odin dictated it to them. They were originally frightening half swan hags that rode wolves and carried troths with them full of their bloody quilts they'd throw over people to cause their deaths. One Valkyrie was punished by Odin for saving a man she took a liking to rather than murdering him.
