The reaction formation makes me think of how brilliant Dave Chapelle's caricature of white Supremacy was in a skit when he played a "Blind White Supremacist" The character was a Black man who was blind and raised to be racist. It was hilarious because he was clearly so overtly racist that actual White Supremacists went along with him and allowed him to do speeches and join their organizations even though they could see that he was a Black man. It is such a classic example of what you're talking about. I have always felt that extreme hatred was inverted love.

I agree. Hatred is simply just fear.

@@kikifisselstein7322 Fear comes in many forms and so does hatred. I happen to despise racism. It doesn't mean that I fear people who aren't the same skin color or background as I am. If anything, I have always strived to be inclusive.

Heh, there's a preacher in our city who does nothing but scream about sodomy, for hours every weekday. No way someone can be that obsessed about anti-homosexuality and sodomy and not have a telling search history. "Why do you have so much gay porn on your phone?" "Oh, it was just for research."

Is the hatred some women show against dominant, masculine men a reaction formation against desiring such a partner in a culture that frames male dominance as toxic?
@meowmsmacadamia70262 жыл бұрын
Women don't like to be tred apon by men in the midst of climbing the highachy. She wants a man who is already strong and doesn't need to contest her to prove it. A masculine man helps a woman up a fight of stairs and doesn't trip her on the way up to get there first. These women your thinking of have probably been belittled by men in the past. So the defences go up.

I wonder about the inverse. So many women (& men) seem to like talking up “alpha” man archetype lately. Maybe it is a reaction formation to the sense that what has long been passed off as an integral part of “masculine strength” may actually be a weakest link.

Hating racism does not mean you are a racist. If your experience with black or drunk people is really bad you may start to hate them - It is only when this hate is over the top, when it is coming from somewhere unknown then this might be it. Some people really got wrong idea here. If you hate what you hear you need to watch MORE videos, because once you have enough knowledge where Sam is coming from it makes sense. Insulting other party only feeds your own need to make yourself feel good. It is not helping anybody.

This seems to explain how the White male culture itself in the US of restricted self-expression & sexuality could foster such an extreme response. It doesn’t take much to step out of borders of acceptable masculinity.

Very interesting Sam. I have a question, if a narcissist is slighted by a joke say on sexuality and many years later is still very triggered by it or the thought of it, is that Reaction Formation at work?

This makes me think that Narcissism is partly a living reaction formation. One feels invisible, weak, stupid and needy; pretend to hate weakness, neediness, stupidity and makes other people feel invisible to convince first oneself one lacks those traits and then also make sure everyone else knows it’s despicable traits to have. Another way of describing relegating the true self to the shadows I guess. Similar to these people; which I assume have quite hight narcissistic traits as a group.

The reaction formation to being gay seems to often take the form of a trans identity nowadays in young people. That makes them straight. Unfortunately this can be a subject of intense regret later if hormones & surgeries were involved. Those stories are now beginning to be told.

Its suppose to be about sexual orientation. But since deciding queer isnt a slur, now anyone who feels a little different can say they are part of the lgbt+. Me? Lgb drop the t. Sexual orientation is what matters. Trans is a separate entity, Using gay folks as a sheild. Same way they do with intersex folk.
