Superb! Very honest, in fact more open and honest than most developers would normally be. I agree that the dog artwork and adjustments have def improved the look and feel of the game. As someone who is not an artist and probably needs to hire a character designer myself could you possibly give an order of cost to indicate how much getting a basic character with animations might cost? Being quite poor I don't want to be ripped off; I also don't want to insult the artists with too low an offer whilst having higher expectations! Good luck.
@samyam7 ай бұрын
Well usually the artist will give you a rate. I've seen from $20-$40 per animation being normal. Sometimes if you buy a lot of animations it can be lower cost per animation. So a few hundred dollars depending on how many animations you need and it's detail.

This video is so relatable! I've only been seriously attempting game dev for about a month now but the spaghetti code, hacky solutions, and not being able to please everyone are already sounding pretty familiar. I also think it's really sweet that the game is dedicated to your dog - I have a senior dog of my own and I don't know exactly how long he has left, but I'll almost certainly dedicate my first game to him for being my best buddy.

Great video. Shows you can make a game just by... well making a game. I know a lot of people who get stuck in tutorial hell thinking they need to know every function of a game engine or how to model/rig/animate/code perfectly. Problem with that approach is following tutorials is often not as rewarding and more of a chore. Best way to be a game dev is to actually make a game and just learn as you go.

Been a game developer for 7 years and never released a paid game? Come back to me at 25 years... I - I really should try and release something commercially ಠ_ಠ Edit: Funny enough, I'm really enjoying the low ceiling requirements for publishing a Playdate game (like, expectations aren't huge; games are meant to be short experiences). Takes a lot of the stress out of it. Might end up publishing on that platform first.

I looked at the steam page. It kind of reminds me of one of those old flash games I used to play like 20 years ago in my web browser. That's what the artwork makes me think of. I wish listed it. I also am a game developer. It's not my job but more my hobby. Anyways I do most of my work in Unity. I've been working in Unity for 6 years but even before that I've been learning/working on games. I started around 2001 with QBASIC and just made text based games. Later I learned the draw function and made animations but didn't make a game doing it that way. I never actually started with a real game engine until 2018 but in the mid 2000's I did do some stuff with RPG maker. In 2021 I briefly worked for Procedural Worlds and in 2022 I released a game asset called Urban Architect. I also have never made a paid game.

Nice! Hopefully you can release a paid game one day (if that's your dream). Thank you for the wishlist!

I think your game looks fun, and also that fixing the colours would make a huge impact on aesthetics. The lava level in the trailer works a lot better than the grassy/forest level since the colours don't clash there. Making the forest hazards a more neutral colour might work; maybe adding some animation to them in order to indicate that they're hazards instead of the red - like making them shake slightly in place

Since i saw the updated art on steam, it actually became one of my most anticipated games this year (i mean don't release it anywhere near the Elden Ring DLC but still). I'm positively drawn in by the Fancy Pants nostalgia mixed with nightmarish Mario Maker-esque obstacles, not to mention the very real lack of decent canine-based platformers on the market.

I feel like abstract backgrounds works better (like jelly world) than current sprites that lacks style or artistic direction, but the dog has a lot of cool animations (the ones sliding are particularly great). It might just need a few tweaks to feel really juicy. One example is how the running animation doesn't match the movement speed. Keep up the good work!
