I actually really love the idea of the Doctor's mother being an old timey time traveling human, and the Doctor's father being this Doctor type time traveler. I like the idea that there's no deep meaning to the Doctor's love of traveling, it's just something he picked up from his dad. I think that's lovely. And it stops the Doctor from being this godly figure, which a lot of people complain about, don't they? And just makes him... a bloke, who travels the world, like his dad before him. I feel like this whole idea that the Doctor is important, or his origins need to be shrouded in mystery just comes from real world hype people have around the show. This is the hero I grew up watching as a little kid, he can't be a nobody, he has to be somebody important!

Also I have an idea for the Doctor’s origin: Leela has a kid, the kid gets lost in time, regenerates into a girl, gets found by Tecteun, yadda yadda yadda, becomes the Other, blah blah blah, thrown into the Loom, unraveled, then millions of years later is reloomed as a Gallifreyian enfant. So the Doctor is full Time Lord, but also.. sorta half-human at the same time..? Oh yeah, and when it comes to the worst of television.. Britain has soap operas, yes. But America has reality TV, which is trillions of times worse.

There is one exception to the "soap operas are garbage" rule though, and that's Dark Shadows. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Dark Shadows is the most Doctor Who like show I've ever seen. It started in black and white in the 60s before changing to color, has a couple weird spinoff movies and a failed 90s reboot, features time travel and a changing cast of characters, has a loose and self-contradictory canon, and it's received a continuation in the form of Big Finish audio dramas. Plus, Barnabas has similarities to the Doctor, Angelique to the Master, and Quentin is basically Jack Harkness. Also, thanks to the Big Finish audios, they've both been established as part of the same universe thanks to the White Rabbit Pub in London, Vlahos' Dorian Gray, and various other minor things appearing in both ranges.

Since you already put Unnatural History on the screen, I'm still a big fan of the way that book simulaneously confirms *all* the Doctor's origins, ranging from 'the Doctor was a human who invented time travel' over 'the Doctor is half human (their father even appears in the novel, or at least it's strongly hinted that Professor Joyce is Ulysses. Maybe because his name got wiped from the timeline...?) to 'the Doctor is the other and all of Lungbarrow is correct' (Kate Orman even said that she thinks Unnatural History stengthens Lungbarrow, not contradicts it). Speaking of Unnatural History, did remember that Sam came up with the Hybrid myth on the spot by stealing from Babylon 5 in Unnatural History and since that books premise is that all possible origins about the Doctor are real, that one might as well be, too? The Doctor certainly seems to think so. ‘Undoubtedly. That doesn’t tell me about his pedigree.’ He lowered his face to the rack, his eyes fixed on her from beside her head. ‘Tell me something useful,’ [the unnaturalist] murmured insistently. ‘How can I classify him?’ ‘Well he’s a hybrid, you know that. A Gallifreyan not born of Gallifreyan, the one who unites the two races and brings good old human niceness into their alien society. Aliens need that, y’know.’ ‘A human hybrid.’ [Sam] saw the contempt in his curling lip. ‘Pseudoscientific nonsense. There’s no evidence,’ he repeated. ‘He’s allowed to be different. He’s got a prophecy and everything.’ ‘Is he?’ ‘Yeah,’ she said, her eyes wide. ‘He’s cosmic, man. And he’s got a wise old spirit who guides him -’ She regretted that last bit before it even made it out of her mouth, but the unnaturalist was already lost in thought. ‘Hybridisation could explain certain biodata irregularities. . . Not that I’m saying it’s possible, you understand. But half-human on which side?’ ‘His mother’s,’ she guessed. ‘But there’s more to him than that.’ His face was closing in, and she couldn’t twist away: the pins kept her locked there as he stared. ‘What is he on his father’s side?’ ‘A Time Lord, of course.’ ‘Is that all?’ ‘I suppose. . . ’ ‘No. Not good enough,’ he said hotly. She had a sudden image of him taking a bite out of her cheek. ‘There’s still room for ambiguity. I don’t care which answer it is, but I need to know. . . ’ ‘No,’ said the Doctor. ‘The story ends here.’ ... ‘I said, where did you learn all that?’ She jumped. ‘All what?’ ‘About the prophecy. What you told him in there.’ ‘Oh, that. Babylon 5.’ He looked blank. ‘I pinched it from an episode I saw a while back.’ ‘Oh.’ For a moment he looked relieved. ‘Never mind, then.’ ‘Wait a minute -’

14:38 its meeeeeee Anyway So I couldn't find _that_ much wack content; I now have a new respect for this video series. However I have got a few things: 1) In _The Fires of Vulcan,_ Seven and Mel travelled to Pompeii just as Vesuvius is going to erupt. So... the Doctor was there twice?? The first time he went there he was seriously depressed about it, no wonder he didn't have too much fun the next time: probably remembering all that shit. 2) So it turns out more than one person has _survived_ falling through the Time Vortex? According to the Third Doctor comic _The Heralds of Destruction,_ Ramón Salamander survived being ripped out of the TARDIS and getting sucked into the time vortex. After being banged about a lot, he ended up at UNIT HQ, where he pulled a reverse Uno card and disguised himself as the Second Doctor. Weird comic. There's also the Ood assassin named Brian (fuckin christ) who was about to board Eight's TARDIS when the Daleks snatched it away, sucking him into the time vortex as well where he was banged about for a while before Ten's TARDIS "gave him a little nudge" so he'd arrive in the Dark Times. _Time Lord Victorious_ is fucking weird... So to recap: Ramón Salamander? Human who survived the full blast of the time vortex. The CyberKing? Immensely huge and powerful robot that _broke up_ in the time vortex despite presumably having some defences (i know it was on its last legs but even so). Brian? Ood who survived the full blast of the time vortex. Captain Jack? Immortal human who couldn't survive the time vortex even by grabbing onto the TARDIS and following it all the way to the end of the universe. TL;DR: The CyberKing and Captain Jack are BABIES. WEAK BABIES. 3) Anything about Iris Wildthyme, I tried but I just don't understand this person, why is her TARDIS _smaller_ on the inside ARGH Anyway, I need to get back to following the listening order of the audio stories that someone published and which is incredibly useful. It's time to get to the 20th century BBC dramas! Yeah this is taking a while. And don't worry, if I can find that Emmerdale book, I'll read it and look for what the hell the Doctor is doing in there. Shouldn't be too bad, right? [traumatic memories of home and away haunt me in my nightmares]

I wouldn't say the Timeless Children doesn't lend "creative" avenues to new stories: Division, New Dimension to explore, Tecteun's message. Problem is just telling me I should be excited about them kinda does the opposite when there's nothing to show in the meantime. As for the half human thing, I just don't like the remotest suggestion that the reason that the Doctor is as kind as they are compared to other timelords is the human in them.

I think it depends on which of the many goals it was trying to achieve . a story about the Doctor breaking all his rules: Nope Waters of Mars has that beat . A story about confronting the Doctor over his patriarchal tendencies and how male narratives treat female characters: then yes, it very much succeeds . Lore arc subversion in favour of intimate character piece: IMO mixed . Companion departure story: okay except Ashildr shouldn't have been the companion and the episode should have better established that there would be no time fallout from Clara still being alive

@Najawin I think it COMPLETELY fails at being a story about the Doctor breaking his own rules, the episode barely addresses it outside of a few lines. Like to be fair, the sheer amount of stuff its dealing with (I even left out tying up Rassilon mostly because that's not so much a goal of the story and more something it had to deal with or people wouldn't shut up) it is impressive it wasn't an incoherent mess. But tbh I don't think how much time it has was the issue, I think it's more how well these ideas synthesize. Varying degrees of success there. The tying of the lore arc subversion to the subject matter of the character piece- pretty good. A story about confronting the Doctor about things he usually does and a story that confronts him for breaking all his rules don't quite mix.

Ntm every time Hell Bent starts to impress me I remember the Doctor shot someone for no reason and it contains the line "Clara Who". My personal headcanon is that The Doctor doesn't *have* any single origin. Lemme put it another way. Remember the Curse of Fenric? Amazing story, obviously. In it, the Doctor changes the timeline in 1943, making it so that humanity will never transform into the Haemovores, as they were originally fated to. But what about every adventure that took place after 1943? The timeline has been altered, and the Doctor has already been past 1943 before it was. In effect, every story that takes place before Fenric in the Doctor's timeline but after 1943 in the universal time is impossible, because they take place in a timeline that doesn't exist. The Doctor who made the change obviously keeps existing, but there's also a new Doctor - The one who visited the altered timeline. Tl;dr - Every time the timeline is changed, every version of the Doctor that exists after the moment the timeline was changed becomes impossible, which leads to the creation of a new Doctor who visited the new, changed timeline instead of the original one. In other words, the Doctor exists in a state of, to use a scientific term, Extreme Time Fuckery (EFT). Because of this EFT, they have not only several contradictory but equally true origins, but also several contradictory but equally true selves. What I'm saying is that I have an excuse to do literally whatever I want with the Doctor Who timeline and the fans who care about shit like "Canon" won't be able to complain, because they are silly babies who don't understand time travel. But what do I know? I'm just a brilliant genius enby who should be made the new Showrunner, because I'll also give The Doctor a Galifreyan Cat which has nine regenerations, and then center a metaplot around that cat, because Gallifrey created both cats and regenerations.

Sssssh you're encroaching on my final episode But yes, lovely comment. Glad there's others who see the series as I do. I recommend Gallifrey Noir, a short story in The Twelve Angels Weeping book for more of this idea of yours explored.

I'd rather have the Doctor be halfhuman than have timeless child remain the canon origin.
