San Diego: Good Samaritans Help Save Life in a Dramatic Rescue 04172020 (UPDATED INFO)

LOCATION: India St.& Chalmers St.
CITY: San Diego
DETAILS:
An older male was riding a bicycle northbound on India St when a female driver ran him over in the intersection. We do not know yet, who was at fault.
The victim ended up stuck under the car and was dragged a short way.
Good Samaritans from the GP Motorcycles business on India St. responded immediately with a heavy lift jack and raised the vehicle a few inches. This resulted in getting some of the weight of the car off of the victim and allowed him oxygen to breathe, but the male was still trapped.
The firefighters are crediting this action to helping in the saving of the victims’ life. The Good Samaritan with the Lift Jack can be seen speaking with a female officer in the video.
Firefighters along with their Heavy Rescue team were able to pull the victim out from under the car in approx 15-20 minutes from when the incident began. The victim was rushed to UCSD Hospital with major injuries. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police.
The SDFD personnel wants to recognize these Good Samaritans for their actions, but they do not any public recognition.

Synopsis:
A 74-year-old male was riding his bicycle southbound on 3600 India St along the east sidewalk. A 38-year-old female was stopped at the intersection of Chalmers St, preparing to turn right onto India St. The male on the bicycle rode off the sidewalk, directly in front of the female in her SUV vehicle. The female began a right turn onto India St. striking the male on the bicycle and dragging him into the center of the street. The male on the bicycle sustained multiple fractures to his pelvis, ribs and left arm. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Traffic Division responded to the scene and will be handling the investigation.

It's really sad that there are so many people (that are just gawkers) that just group around a scene like this, apparently to watch a person pass away, then have the audacity to utter, these words, "dude, what do I do dude?" Yet in this situation here, there wasn't any of that crap! People (nearby) using "Common Sense" witnessed this situation unfold, (STEPPED UP)ran with a jack in hand, saving this older gent's life by lifting up car enough to help this guy breathe! Hope he has a Speedy Recovery! Thanks for sharing this amazing story!

To be honest if I was a leader of a country, I would ban bicycles off the road. Reason being is theres legit nothing between you and another vehicle, plus you're going a lower which will slow down traffic and other vehicles have to give you distance when overtaking you (Which I perfectly understand.) I would refer have them safe than seriously injured or worse dead.

You are right in saying if bike going straight it has right of way over vehicle turning right. I always look and wait. We do however have bikes here that routinely run red lights, ride against traffic, don't stop for stop signs and ride on sidewalks. I've even had them yell at me walking on sidewalk to get out of the way. My response is not polite.

Praises go out to all who helped the elderly gentleman during his time of need. I do have a little bit of reservation regarding the owner of the motorcycle business. He could have been more appreciative towards his employees who took it upon themselves to come to the immediate aid of the victim! No disrespect. Just an observation.

The description says he had "non life-threatening injuries." How was that not life-threatening? He had a pelvic fracture which in almost all cases is life-threatening since the sharp, broken edges can pierce the delicate blood vessels in the abdomen and cause the patient to bleed internally to death. Hope he's ok now.

Typically unless imediate life saving measures need to take place such as CPR, crews like to do a proper spinal imobalization and extraction. They do this to prevent further injury.

When lifting a patient, the person (rescuer) at the HEAD of the patient is the one who is to issue the commands to "Prepare to lift..." LIFT. In this case it was the dude at the feet...weird.

i dont think its hard to figure out whos at fault. if she was going slow around the turn and he came up fast he wouldve tumbled over the car. if he was going slow and she was going slow they wouldve just bumped into eachother. if he was going at a medium speed but she was going faster hes get sucked under. well, he got sucked under, so obviously..
