The white 2021 Toyota Supra was his dream car. He saved his money, working two jobs for well over a year, and even took out a loan from his credit union. He spent months trying to find one and finally spotted an ad online for a used one for $57,000 at a used car dealership in El Cajon.
That dream was soon dashed.

A local used car dealer that sells nicer high end cars wouldn’t let me test drive a car until I sat down and negotiated a purchase price BEFORE I drove it. I pulled up in a BMW and was looking at a $55k used car. I couldn’t believe that is their policy. I said why do I want to negotiate a price on a car I’m not even sure I would want to buy unless I enjoyed the driving experience. The owner even called me after I left a negative review. Places are nuts

Yep, I have a 23 Supra with a catless downpipe and it also has a CEL. Someone should reach out to this guy and have him do a code scan through his OBD port - if it's something like P0420 then the only thing he needs to worry about is passing emissions since it looks like he's in CA. At 1:55 I spotted an AMS engine cover, Blitz strut bar, carbon radiator plate, dress up bolts, and custom caps so it's likely the previous owner swapped out the downpipe since it's one of the first bolt ons you can do for immediate power.

Always take it to a mechanic of your choosing before and look at their ob2 for codes (buy an ob2 reader) … make sure it shifts good, look under the radiator/oil cap to see if there is sludge; steer the steering wheel all the way to the right and left and hold it for a few seconds to see if it makes a whine noise; listen to the engine to see if it sounds weird or not… look at the exhaust smoke, if it’s super white or blue and billowing out … if anything is wrong or they don’t let you take it to a mechanic you immediately WALK, no haggling, WALK, on to the next car…. Also, make sure it has a clean car fax and that the odometer miles on the car match with the cars interior/exterior “beauty”… be safe. This is the best advice on buying a new car you’ll probably get.

Some advise to all the young people and first time buyers. Don't go alone to used car dealerships. Research and take someone that has purchased a car before at a dealership. Even the big dealerships try to sell you the cars no one wants and or they'll over charge the buyers. Take a veteran and don't sign until you get a good deal.

I’m a car guy, and from the looks of it, the engine bay has some mods. The “emissions issue” that they are talking about is probably just a simple cat delete, and aftermarket exhaust system, which causes a benign check engine light. Doesn’t do any harm drivability or car health wise, it’s just a bit modified is all.

Agreed. I have a Supra and I can guarantee it's 100% because of a catless downpipe. Nothing is wrong with the engine, it's just the car saying it's detecting off nominal reading on the downpipe's O2 sensor, since it has no Cat. I've been running catless for over 10,000 miles with a CEL and the car has 0 problems.

I'm retired from a 30 year career in the car business. I worked for three quality dealers, and the rule was always that the customer had to drive the car first before signing paperwork - it didn't matter if the car was an exotic or a classic or a cash car. I did meet customers with previous bad car buying stories, and I always wondered why they went ahead and bought cars from people who were not treating them right. The problem with sellers like this is they often obfuscate their business behind shells and hard to trace ownership - they know they will likely get sued at some time. Best wishes Hector, I hope your attorney can get the dealer to unwind the transaction - I wish that California was more strict in their dealer licensing. The people who did this to Hector probably have a history of such deals, but somehow manage to keep their dealer license.

When a used car sales dude prohibits a prospective customer from test-driving the car, that should've immediately raised red flags and sounded alarm bells. It's abundantly clear that he didn't want to risk the "Check Engine" light coming on during the test-drive (with Hector driving) and risk losing the sale. Nothing says "grease ball used car salesman" louder than this scenario!

He's a DACA student. He's not even a citizen. Is he legal to drive? Would the dealer's insurance cover them in an accident? Oh wait, California gives licenses to anyone that breaks in.

The shady used dealership seller was doing that ECU trick, cleared all the codes, maybe pulled a pin out and whatever else, where u can’t drive over like 40 mph, and other things or else it’ll trigger the CEL

I went with my friend last year to see a Subaru Wagon for sale. My friend was eager to buy such a car. Subarus are slightly different for me. So we go and first thing the older gentleman said was “mind if I drive” We said sure. So he took us for a ride and said he has a shop and is a mechanic. Then we get back to the house I drop on the floor and look under the car. I wasn’t even buying the car my friend was. But I said “no we don’t want it thank you” when we got back to the car I told my friend about the huge oil mess under the car. The car had been altered.
