I have been repiping in the folsom California area for the past 4 years. We get almost a dozen calls a day for pinhole leaks in copper pipes. It's being blamed on the water district for putting too much chlorine in the water.

All PEX products will fail in the United States. Just give it time. In CA it is something like 90% of all water districts NOW use chloramine to treat the water. That wasn’t always the case. Ammonia in the chloramine eats hdpe products alive. PEX is hdpe on slight steroids. Polybutylene is very similar (Quest) in regards to all three still being in the polyolifine family. Only difference between PEX a and b is how the tubing is cured. If you want the best piping material in terms of durability against chloramine (not cost) it goes in this order: cpvc, copper, stainless steel, PEX b, PEX a, hdpe, polybutylene. Cpvc being the best overall material in terms of cost vs. durability. Educate yourselves. Your major home builders do not care about you. They care about the bottom line and they have national deals with these PEX manufacturers and specific contract language in regards to warranty with the manufacturers that protect them and their national PEX partners.

I have been watching your newer videos where it’s mentioned that you don’t use PEX A from upenor. This video mentions you used it since 1995. Has there been lots of new issues within the 4 months to change what you have been using for so long?

Good question as I saw that other video also on KZbin and I’m wondering the same thing. Any type of plastic changes with time by either gassing off or reacting chemically with chlorine. So repiping should be considered a maintenance chore just like painting exteriors that have been previously painted.

I’ve been plumbing service and doing change outs for 21 years. I’ve never installed a bigger pipe than the meter. So if I got 3/4 meter. Guess what size is perfect ? Then once you get through the 200’ of pipe to furthest fixture. There’s exactly equal amount of water going through meter as exiting the last fitting. Exactly. No more no less. Water doesn’t compress. We run on pumps here. Not gravity. Gravity system does function different. But if you want a gallon out. Guess what exactly has to go back in the source? That’s right a gallon. No more no less. Friction loss is for high rise buildings. Not 2 story houses. There’s nothing to figure. City gives 135psi. You can’t fuck it up with 3/4 trunks and 1/2 branches. Stop wasting customer money by wasting time doing the math.

Look up the Colorado class action lawsuit against Uponor, they don't mention chloramine but they are definitely having some sort of failure that is caused by their manufacturing process.

@@Trahloc Just because they are sued doesn't mean they are guilty. I just looked up the lawsuit. It has to do with exterior defects, not interior defects caused by anything in the water. This video sounds like scare tactics a shady unethical contractor might use to get you to change all of the plumbing. "According to the complaint, Uponor, in order to get the blue and red coating to stick to the outside of the PEX tubing, runs the product through a furnace/flame treatment that aids in the application of coatings and adhesives. This heat treatment, however, destroys the tubing’s antioxidant stabilizers, which are crucial for the piping to achieve flexibility, maintain ductility and protect against embrittlement, the lawsuit says. "
