Love how perfectly this watch is finished! The brushing and the razor sharp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces are stunning! I'm also a fan of accurate end link fitment and this watch doesn't disappoint in this respect. I agree that the hex logo actually looks better printed. The only potential downside I see here is the matt black dial. I looks grey in some lighting conditions and I'd actually prefer a glossy and deep black dial. And I actually prefer smaller clasps on this of vintage style watch.

Man, the matte dial is controversial for sure. A lot are asking why matte. Lol. I actually like it. Glossy can get really reflective in certain lighting. But I do miss that deepness of glossy

Im also torn about the logo. Im actually on the printed out 'San Martin' instead of the hex logo all together. I'm actually gonna say the Willard homage that SM had with the applied 'San Martin' was the best dial logo they had. Overall though, I think this is a killer watch. I may need to upgrade my 36mm Alpha....

Fantastic and very thorough review. I was looking into this watch but was worried about straps getting damaged like its been reported with version 1. Thank you for showing it on different straps, it looks like there are no problems with that on this version. Now I’m really tempted to get this one.

Great watch and excellent review with great macro video. Agree with all your points. Have owned this watch with PT for about a year now and it is my go to daily. Gains 3-5 seconds/day. Wearing experience is on par with my watches costing in the $Ks.

Great review! You're absolutely right about the SM logo on the dial. I have a SM BB58 homage watch, and at certain angles, when the hands are close to the logo, it creates a major distraction. You had a great idea to infill the logo with black. And, one other SM oversight that I've experienced with both my SM watches (SN004 and SN006); even with the 4 hole clasp, it does not cover the distance of a full link, meaning that getting an exact fit on wrist is very hit or miss. I'd like to see SM offer a half-link on the bracelet; that would make this watch almost perfect, IMHO.

Getting the PT5000 from a maker like San Martin makes a lot of sense. SM has good QC and a reputation to protect. Another Chinese brand has a similar homage with the same movement for about $110US, that I would question.

Just got mine in thanks to your review. Highly disappointed on how hard it is to use the crown with the PT5000 movement. Fingers hurt trying to grab the small crown and wind or adjust the time. Movement is just so tight to wind or even screw down.

....... owning a number of San Martin watches which are great, I must say when it comes to a 36mm Explorer homage I would recommend the Armida A6 with its ETA 2836 movement as a worthy rival to this ......... I love the way the Armida does away with that faux Rolex case back and adds its unique extra long seconds counter balance ........ just the humble opinion of a watch addict ........

@@EscapeWheel .... double the price ? ..... the Ali Express link you have shows the San Martin at $436 discounted price with a SW200 movement , the discounted price ( they have several 15% off sales a year ) of the Armida is $464 with an ETA 2836 movement and since the Armida comes with both a metal bracelet and an excellent rubber strap I would say the price could be considered the same ......... As to the Smiths , there is a problem with availability and customer service and then the many complaints about its metal bracelet ........

But if you consider the details of the dial and crystal its almost closer to a 14270 explorer than a 1016 the shape of the 369 is the only thing that is similar to the 1016 This company does not mfg its own parts. Those parts are bought from a bulk watch parts mfg with special branding applied and then assembled under their name.

I think that's any brand out of China. AFAIK parts come from the lugyou factory, then finished and assembled in their own shop as shown on their KZbin page. It's quite an operation they have there.

It's best to measure yourself. This review was of an older model with 20mm lugs, they updated the case to use 19mm lug widths...but then I heard they went back to 20mm? Maybe?

Steve, what tool do you use to get the bracelet off? My spring bar tool is too big for bracelets like this one and I can't get the bracelet off.

Just a normal tool, nothing fancy. Sometimes I have to turn the tool sideways (perpendicular to how it should work) if the notch isn't big enough. It's enough to grab the springbar with one of the fork ends of the tool.

I bought a San Martin watch sn-021 recently and the experience has been rather poor. Just wanna share the story so people know what to expect from San martin in this situation. The watch is finished pretty nice for the price. The lines are crisp and sharp. But the pt5000 movement was broken out of the box, would not hack, stop running randomly (3 times in less than 1 min), and the minute and second hands have bright white lume and the rest have patina lume. Their customer service rep was frustrating to talk to, implied that I didn't know how to operate the watch at first and made me jump through hoops to prove the watch was broken. Even then they only agreed to send a replacement movement. Meaning i'd have to pay to get it fixed locally. (costs 100 canadian dollar at watch repair shops) I wasn't happy with the offer so I started dispute, and after sending even more videos to prove the watch is broken, they agreed to let me ship back for warranty repair. I liked the watch still and was ok with that. But I told them that they need to fix the hands too because the mismatch really ruins the dial. They told me there's nothing they can do and all their watches are like that. (What the fuck?????) I ordered dial customization they told me there's no return. I intended to keep and reviews were good. So i didn't think much of it. But when you ship me a broken watch with a dial that looks different from your product pics, that changes things. Since they refused to fix the hands I wanted a refund. I even told them that they can keep the 60 dollars I paid for dial customization to be fair. They agreed to refund me after days of arguing and now they chanegd their mind again and only want to refund me half. Still disputing this but I want to share the story so you know what to expect from san martin when shit goes wrong.

Be careful with the SN021. Version 1 has a thicker bezel, flat crystal, and flat, printed dial. This model in the review is Version 2bwith applied (3D) scale. Best bet is to order from my link from Ali. The watch will be on sale starting the 28th of this month.

Not 100% sure, but that's kind of the standard setup on most watches. Tube screws into the case, then crown onto the tube.

Cheapest one I can find that does screw in is Marathon Diver 36mm, but I'm not into Divers too heavy...if you really have the watch there like you claim you do. It would take you 5 seconds to see if its screwed in..? Also none of your links dont work. Cant find the watch on Ali-Express. Just takes you to Ali Express, no watch there.

@@EscapeWheel Typical, no reposne from you on if the crown tube is screwed into the case. You can see by looking, but I doubt you have the watch or know what to look for, lol. By reviewing this watch and others, we assume you have basic knowledge of quality watch construction, yet you talk about fashion like where all whamen at a make-up shop and offer little substance into even basic build quality of the watch...no doubt obviously just after money.

There is no doubt that this is a gorgeous watch, but it is still a Chinese watch. Other Chinese brands are half the price and, although the quality may not quite be up to the standards of San Martin, I can't help but think that SM are over priced- IMHO.

San Martin is the only Chinese brand that doesn't leave me wanting more in terms of fit and finish. Easily up there quality wise with the microbrands and entry swiss pieces. Sure a Pagani is 1/3 the price, but IMO, it's 1/3 the watch

You seem to have blocked me from replying to you for some reason... Thanks for the response. I just wrote a better reply and it was lost, so... In reiteration there are many watches that do not have replaceble crown tubes and this information is hard to come by, which is why I asked you. I therefor find your answer assuming its not an issue odd. This is not my experience in collecting watches for 50 years. Tubes are either part of the case or pressed in, or the desireable (for me) screwed in. Part of the case cant be replaced and pressed is hit and miss and requires a machine at factory - its not ideal and not guaranteed. CWC's $2000 divers only have pressed in crowns. Many watches have the tube a spart of the case. The cheapest screw in I found was Marathon TSAR diver, but not my cup of tea. Sold it. Too heavy. Too big (for me). I never said I stripped a tube. Again I see you get this online. Never stripped one as I use care. But tubes can and do wear out. Like anything a watch requires scheduled mantenance and care, especially where water resitance is concerned, wouldn't you agree. Of the watches you mentioned above that have "replaceable" tubes, will you be specific please, as I asked. Is the tube screwed in or pressed in please? But as someone who appreciates quality in engineering, a screwed in replaceable crown is somthing I personally look for. Besdies not all of us have 200 watches to play with that wont wear out. Aside form this I know I am not the only one interested in this minor but important technical detail. IMO, reviewers seem to be copying each other no originality and little to no technical aspects of watches discussed anymore. Be well.

Why all that recent hype about san martin watches? They are as good or bad as any alix brand like pagani, parnis etc. And they are x3 times more expensive. Without any good reason.

Do you not trust the countless reviewers on KZbin? I've handled MANY Pagani and Parnis watches and while they are great for under $100 they are nowhere near the quality of a San Martin like this. If the San Martin is a 10 across the board, Pagani is like a 6 or 7 max, bracelet and clasp are like a 6 max. All with worse QC than a San Martin..

I'd say that San Martin and/or Cronos make watches that are finished/perform better than watches costing $100-$300 more, depending on the company. The thier SN017 was $200 bucks. If you put it up against something like a Kamasu, you'd see it's a better watch by far.

It's not a hype.... Over the past 18 months San Martin have shown themselves to be receptive to criticism, remarks and wishes from reviewers and buyers. Consequently, they have considerably upped their game design-wise, finishing-wise and QC-wise. I have Pagani, Benyar, Phylida which are superficially nice, but San Martin are on a much higher plane.

True. They look the same on youtube. But buy both, they are very different in person - tolerances, fit, finish and more. Buy both and see for yourself
