Sand Filter Valve Gasket Replacement Hayward SP0714T1 & SP071620T

I replaced the spider gaskets in 2 different Hayward valves. I will show you the steps. You can go 2 different routes on the smaller valve. Replace the gasket and buy glue or buy the gasket already installed on the plastic valve. The bigger valve, you will have to replace the gasket.

Finally had the to waste blow out. Hey, 15 years, few hard freezes. The gasket is basically plumber's putty at this point. They say 410 Loctite but those bottles fun like 30. I will use the $9 version. 401 but not loctite 401. Good tip about winterize position.

@@fixthemthings yes!! and putting a shut off valve on the backwash is a great idea. I've had those gaskets go out always at the most inconvenient times, when the stores were closed. Installing a shut off valve allows a person to buy some time and still be able to swim without losing your water.

can you describe what I need to do to the filter / pump etc before removing the top key assembly Do I need to empty / drain the filter before I start, or just turn off the pump etc

@@philhurren1169 just turn your pump off then put the valve in winter position or leave it where it’s at. If you have the smaller valve, I would just buy the gasket with the plastic valve already together. It would be much easier.

Great video, thank you. Is there an o-ring for the top of the standpipe where it connects to the Hayward Sp0714? Or does the standpipe just slide into the valve?

I was nervous,watching inyopools videos they say the one with gasket attatached to top multiport valve(1st one you done in this video)is not replacable.I done ordered gasket and its warm so alge is growing rapidly..Your video let me know it IS possible to replace those type gaskets as well...

It is replaceable but buying the plastic piece with the gasket already installed is easier. Just let the glue dry for a day before using.

I absolutlyvare unable to relove the spider gasket, despite using a hairdryer and a little bit of alcohol. I already purchased the top handle spring and stem assembly, and a new spider gasket and adhesive for my old SPX0710X32 that had leaking water from the waste line. Now I , cannot proceed as my gasket is very strongly glued down. Hair dyer, and scraping ineffective. What to do?

It is a pain to get off. You will have to use a small screw driver to get underneath the gasket and tear it out. You can buy the plastic piece with the gasket already installed. It doesn’t cost too much more and it would be less trouble.

I would recommend buying a new key (bottom section where the gasket sits in). Worth the money. Around $40 to $50

Will a bad gasket cause loss of prime? I unfortunately was switching between modes while the pump was running a few times and now i keep losing prime.

You shouldn’t switch while the pump is running that will roll the gasket. If your pump won’t prime it is usually a leak on the suction side. Hopefully you are filling the basket with water before turning on.

Not sure on the first valve you did, but the second one you applied waaay too much glue. The glue on this one is supposed to be applied "sparingly"... A dot at just the outer intersections.

Maybe, but in my experience with these valves, the part that rolls over is always in the long straight sections. Glue can always come back off when replacing the gasket.
