WIDE or NARROW tyres, what do you drive on and why? 🤔🤔

@@davidhammond3336 Nice! Seems like you got it dialed in. I definitely think a wider tire on sand is a benefit, in mud I’m not sure so I think we need to test that at some point. 👍 Thanks for sharing David. 👍😁

All depends on type of sand and moisture content, tyre pressure, diameter. Sharp sand v different to smooth sand. But think...a Unimog weighs 5000kg plus up to 14000kg. The widest tyres Unimogs NORMALLY have are 445, yet lightweight little suvs have 305, 325 often. Look good but aren't always suitable. Lowering tyre pressures has much greater effect

Narrow tires for soft ground. Wide ones have to dig through more material. Wide tires for hard ground like rock crawling.
@Predator270074 жыл бұрын
In mud, on a typical 2-3 ton gvvw 4x4 Id use 255/85 or 255/100 r16...nothing wider. 7.50x16 or 8.25x16 used to be std fit for European armies..mud, snow, ice. They are off road more than on road. Michelin XZL. Fewer shattered diffs, half shafts, UJs. Just air down where you need flotation. I'm on 255/85 now. 10.8" clearance under diff case 255/100 gave around 12.6" or say 11.5 at 15psi...with phenomenal grip due to long (not wide) footprint.

Load index-rating plays a big role in a test like this.The 33 have a load index of 108=1000kg(C rating ,6ply) and the 255 is 123=1550kg(E rating.10 ply).Even with street pressure the 108 is going to work into offroad.The 123 needs to be deflated a lot unless you have them mounted on a HD truck,2500-3500 that carries some weight on the bed.I always prefer tall skinnies but they have to be deflated to work on light weight vehicles.

Work on your failed hill starts Simon. Stalled on a hill, hold vehicle on foot brake. Select reverse in low box, foot off foot brake, start engine and go down safely without touching brakes. Stops the risk of locking up the wheels if using brakes. Sand is rather like snow. Reduce torque at contact patch by using a higher gear and not too much right foot. Thus not disturbing the sand too much. Or momentum. Either way, try not to spin up the turbo too much.
@LandRoverDrive3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I know I know, and your totally right... And I should really do it all the time but I got lazy I guess.. 🙂🙂 Turbo spin up, good point, will try and focus on that next time. Use the bottom torque instead you mean?
@PLAYINGAROUND3 жыл бұрын
@@LandRoverDrive in general don't try to use too much torque. Snow means high box and difflock. Sand the same, if going the momentum route. If going slow the trick is to not to disturb the surface too much. As always with off roading, one situation is easy, but two or more at the same time and then it gets tricky. Overall, reduced the torque at the contact patch by not too much right foot.

There are alot more variables going on here than just tyre width. The TD5 has a widened control throttle band when in low range and a clutch save fuelling map which make it completely different to anything else when used in a comparison on this terrain.
@LandRoverDriveАй бұрын
I totally agree, so many factors. There is a great video on youtube, millions of views on it, where he more scientifically compares wide vs narrow, great video. This was more of a practical, have fun in the sand, test of tires video. Could be a car vs car video too, basically. 😊. Driver skills are a big factor as well. I din't know the facts about the TD5 so thanks for sharing that. 👌 I have seen the TD5 with the TC in action, and that's just insane capable off-road, and I would definitely suggest getting that on if people are more into off-road than overlanding, way better. Best, Simon.

I have never tried my mud tires in sand yet. However I did use my all terrain tires in the Oregon sand dunes with great success several years ago. If you click on my name I believe I have a video very short tho. I was always told MT are not the best for sand, I am not sure how true that is. Great video Simon.
@LandRoverDrive4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! On sand I think it depends on the conditions, driving style and power. If you got enough juice I guess you can throw as much sand as you need to go forward with the MTs. 😳 But most of us don’t pack that amount of power, at least not in our Defenders. For us the bigger contact area is our friend. But all depends on the conditions, I haven’t driven enough on sandy beaches to say what’s best there. 😊 Yet. 😉
@overlandready3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, most of the failures were purely down to not hanving the vehicles in the right gear or not enough momentum, so unfortunately not really a good comparrison. Also the td5 has a ffair amount more torque than the 200tdi. Great that you guys had a play in the sand which is always good.
@LandRoverDrive3 жыл бұрын
Hey, yeah it's definitely not perfect and If we had the time we would do it more scientifically. But it was fun. Momentum is a great factor and I could have gone harder on the first try. But due to the hard tires it just started to burrow down into the sand. I wish I had let the air out of the tires but sadly I didn't. 😅 The 200tdi is tuned so these has pretty much the same output so I don't think that is a big factor. And yeah, it always fun to be out there with your mates. 👍🙂

Another great video Simon! I guess you guys proved that in sand, a higher gear and some momentum is always a good thing. Slow and first gear low range is best for rock crawling. Really a lot comes down to driving style and here momentum. I have drive here a lot with all kind of different tires, even with winter tires, so I can conclude that the driver is the most important. I make these videos as simple and basic so people can see the difference and the similarities and then they can decide for themselves what they want to get. Look like fun guys. If you get a chance. do an air down test on the soft sand, and film close to the tire. i have found that on my KM2's that when aired down, the act of the tire flexing back to shape when it comes around helps the sand dislodge from the tread . also what is your max revs on your TDI? and I learned a new thing, that the land rover seats are way cooler than my land cruiser. :) HAHA. You always have a seat outside if you want.
@LandRoverDrive4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom, I will make a video on air pressure later during the year. Good point about the tire reshaping and "throwing" /clearing the tread when it does. Would be fun to see that in slowmotion to actually see what happens. 👍🙂 Not sure what the max revs are, but on the TD5 on my Defender 110 it's pretty heigh. Max hp is also pretty high in the revs. The seats, a bit simpler I guess, with all that follows. :) Could probably drive a bit further in the LC without getting so tired. Yeah, bring your own seet.. I shoud just make a stand for it and use it around camp.. That's would give a lot of poeple a laugh. 😂😂

Great video nice to see the 2 Defenders offroad. I prefer the narrow tyres in my opinion you have got a better feeling in the steering. At the moment i drive the skinny 205 R16 on my Range Rover classic, but on the repainted rims i fit 235/70/16 same diameter as the 205 but a little wider. I don't want to fit bigger tyres on my RRC because you can feel it that he looses power.
