I used the pivoting design, one wire alternator on my '61 'Vair. Modified a support for the alternator to keep it anchored and it was great.

Just have a lot of fiddly stuff on these old sand rails that have to be figured out in order to make some of the newer tech to work with the older tech. I'm sure as close as you are to getting it all working you'll have it ready soon working and running and then being able to play.

I go with a local starter/alternator parts supplier and sometimes you can just put the opposite hand starter drive on and reverse the wiring between the solenoid and the starter motor. The local guy who knows what he's doing and is not just a computer jockey can put the new starter on the test bench and verify correct operation before handing it to you. Best!

Put the positive brushes where the negative brushes are and put the negative brushes where the positive brushes were n it will reverse the rotation.

Jim, when I install the fuel tanks on my tank band clamps, I put rubber strapping between the tank and clamps to keep the sand from rubbing into the tank and causing it to eventually leak.

Hey Jim, make sure that you have correct Corvair cooling fan on that engine. The Corvair alternator rotates backwards of typical GM applications, thus overheating the diodes and regulator. Trust me I know. Trashed two in the 70s in the learning process in short order.

My first car I got I spent all summer and part of the school year after school working in a salvage yard taking tires off of rims for a 1964 Ford Thunderbird. I was told that the motor just needed a new head gasket. Turned out that the motor had a cracked block so I broke down over 5,000 tires and had to sell the Thunderbird back to the salvage yard owner for a couple of hundred bucks and was never able to drive the car. Not a good deal on my part. Second car I bought for around $600.00 was a 1957 Ford Ranch Wagon it was a neat old car and after I spent a few months fixing the breaks and a few other things in it Found out some major issues like the floor was about to fall out from under it. I did drive it a bit though. It had a 351 Cleveland with a 2 barren carburetor and a 4 speed manual trans mission. I did not have the money being about nineteen at the time or the knowledge to repair it so Had to sell as well.

Many years ago I used to race RC offroad electrics. Everyone else LOVED the old RC-10 or Kyosho Ultima 2WD cars. I preferred (and still do) the Kyosho Optima AWD cars. I would LOVE to play the right numbers and build a full size (shaft drive) mid/rear engine Optima styled sand rail. Then the decision would be between a V12LS or a 12 rotor Wankel (either with twin turbos) 🤣🤣!

Jim, please get the correct spark plug boots that seal the shroud with the plug wire. It keeps all air headed down over the heads not out those holes. Clark’s corvair parts has the correct ones

i'm not an expert in terms of cars, but isn't a starter motor a normal brushed dc motor? Those motors can have reverse polarity and thus spin the other way around..
