That moment where vovinam guy charged in with a jump and got launched over Sanda's shoulder was my favorite. So amusing lmao.

I trained Vovinam in Vietnam (Dalat, specifically) for a few weeks. I'd compare it most closely to Taekwondo - there is a combative aspect, but it is primarily in the realm of "performance martial arts." And in that second realm, IMHO, it's completely underrated. Vovinam is one of the coolest looking martial arts out there, with their emphasis on acrobatic flying head scissor takedowns. It's like the lovechild of wushu and lucha libre.

Are there other specific vietnamese martial arts? I have seen some names but there was very little and i was curious since Vietnam is connected to chinese culture.

@@TheMightyMcClaw how would describe Vovinam? The clothing looks like karate,some of the striking too,and the most peculiar thing seems to be those scissor kicks,would you say there is any difference in striking?
@hobathuannn6645 Жыл бұрын
@@junichiroyamashita Im Viet so I can answer a couple of questions here. There are way more martial arts in VN but Vovinam is the most organized and well-known, the striking is basically like any other striking arts. But the emphasis of Vovinam is takedown, sweep, throw( not as much as Judo). The version you learn is the sport version, the real Vovinam is used in military and police training. That's why Vovinam emphasis on these aerobic moves and throws. The concept of Vovinam is that you want to use "martial art" at least as possible, ideally immobilize the enemy or off balanced him. For normal people that will be the time to escape from dangerous situations and for officers that will be the time for them to use weapons.

Loving these frequent uploads man. Sanda seems to me like very much like MMA but with some Chinese martial arts mixed in. I feel like where Sanda benefits a lot in these matchups is the automatic reactions they have to dismantle kicks by using throws and take downs. During Zabits short but amazing career we saw how he pretty much had an answer to everything. Almost like the Bruce Lee quotes on "If he moves forward, I move backwards".

Vovinam is basically karate with a fancy leg head grapping takedown that can't be used in a real fight anyway.

That last takedown also demonstrates a curious phenomenon I've seen a lot in martial arts: If you spin kick your opponent, chances are very high they will spin kick you shortly after. It's like a "hey, I can do that too!" response.

Isn't that last move actually a technique that is almost solely used in Vovinam? I have no idea what it is called, but it is basically catching the head between your legs as you rotate through the air and meant to either throw the guy or twist his neck if he resists. I've mainly seen it used by women in movies, because it is flashy and sexy, but that looks like what he attempted.

I might be talking out of my butt but from what I've seen vovinam is karate based so they are probably aware of throws but they only use trips and sweeps during practice and competition, which might explain why he wasn't prepared to get thrown around even though he knew how to avoid it (in theory) and was also able to kick and drop him (a sweep basically)

@shadowblitzo123 Жыл бұрын
Vietnamese here. Sanda guy did better. The vovinam guy couldn't defend himself in close combat and grappling because they don't teach how to apply self defense in their sparring. Vovinam is too kungfuey and wushu like. It's mostly for performance and not combatative. My dad went to their training dojo once and he thought it was like a fake kung fu like performance. Vovinam excels in unpredictable takedowns like its scissors takedown. But for everything else, it's better to learn wrestling, bjj, kick/boxing, muay thai, even sanda is a good combat martial art.
