Amazing. However I am itching to put the stamps into some kind of stamp mount pocket or holder . Seeing the stamps in a bent state on the table makes me sad.

How on earth do you know which plates stamps come from? I understand that there are letters in corners of the stamps.

Hi Chris. The plates were first manufactured with empty squares at the bottom corners. Then the letters were inserted using a punch and hammer so they were always a bit different in the way they sat in each square (either tilted, higher, lower, to the left or right), each letter combo AA, AB, etc has just 11 different possible positions so there are books describing the characteristics of each combo for each plate, some include photographs which are invaluable. Also many letter combos have unique additional elements like recut frame lines (a line thicker on one plate than the other with the same letter combo), or the engraver might have left one frame line slightly extending at one corner rather than meeting perfectly. All that sort of thing is dealt with in books written to help with plating Penny Blacks, in fact books have been written to help with plating the 1d reds, which is an even bigger area! If you need recommendations let us know.

I'm surprised he just touches the stamps with his fingers. Mint Waterlow and De La Rue seahorses can be worth thousands and the oils from your skin can damage them.

i collect stamps for many years and i find penny black or red or blue stamps is the most boring stamps that i ever came across , the only main difference is plates number or letter ...... stamps look the same and for me i find it the most boring stamps i ever came across .

I used to collect a wide range of stamps, but now |I only collect - 1d Blacks, 1d Reds and 2d Blues and only the ones with stars in the top corners. Once you have the specialist knowledge, they are the most fascinating stamps I have ever known. Plating the early stamps is really interesting and can be financially rewarding. A friend of mine has found not 1 but 2 Plate 168 perf stamps (I think 7 exist).
