To be honest. Ever since the boxter came ut way back people wonderd how a "big" porsche engine in a mid engine setup would be. And here we are! This will be a future classic just like the first 4,0 gt3. Huge fan of the gt4rs! and good analasys!

Agree with all. Actually don't know if you noticed but AP "threw down the gauntlet" in a Motortrend review. To quote RE the Nurburgring Time: "This has not been enough to convince some internet personalities, however, who speculated the 718 Cayman GT4 RS had a braking issue during its Nürburgring lap, allegations Preuninger calls "downright ridiculous. I get very aggravated with these kinds of claims," he says. "They have no idea. Everyone thinks they are an expert because they analyze a video. The maker of that video [alleging brake issues] is welcome to come over and show what kind of lap time they can do." Misha, think you/Apex need to run a GT4RS vs GT3 comparison with a fast driver on the Nurburgring! ;)

I loved Preuningers explanation on top gear to how they didn’t fully commit to absolute chasing lap times, but decided upon making the most fun backroad carver with the GT4RS. I’m probably attending 5-8 track days maximum per year, but I drive every week numerous backroad twisties. I think the GT4RS will be the best hooligan driver of the entire Porsche catalogue ever made, that’s why I’ve ordered one and specced it today in guards red with black magnesium wheels.

This is a great analysis. On the matter of the pricing, if I remember right, Porsche is marketing the GT4 as an entry-level track car, so I think making its performance comparable to the GT3 is more about encouraging customers to go for the GT4RS. But, you're right in saying that Porsche isn't sandbagging the car by simply pointing out the difference in the chassis and suspension. Good work there.

The drive away price after I spec everything is actually 430K Aud, which is relatively close to the price of a 991.2 GT3 RS. I think it is really weird that the price is almost double of a 718 GT4, and I never expected that they put a new engine in the GT4 RS because the GT4 had a 992 Turbo engine stripped off the Turbo and made it a 4.0 litre. I thought they were only going to beef it up to 450 bhp because looking at the 991.2 GT3 and GT3 RS, they didn't have such a great difference in power. But the new GT4 RS has 80 more horsepower, which is a lot more than the normal 718 GT4, which is strangely insane for Porsche to do that. It's like a completely different car, I wonder if the 718 GT4 owners would feel been ripped off in that aspect.

@@jezhopo7221 it's 238K without any options on mine for the GT4. My friend bought his GT4 last year for 260K with his own customized option. I customized everything on the GT4 RS I wanted and it's 430K, way more expensive than the GT4. I remembered the driveaway price difference for a 991.2 GT3 and GT3 RS was only about 60K without any options. This difference is way more for the GT4 and GT4 RS.

As an owner of a completely carbon equipped 2016 GT4 (which incidentally, I was told was the last of the model !!! Porsche has been “sandbagging” the Cayman ever since it first came out in one way or another. The first Cayman purposefully didn’t have a limited slip which according to a lot of people would have made it quicker than the base 911 in most cases at the time. I guess not fitting an LSD or having the old McPherson design is not really sandbagging but purposely making the car slower :D

If I had the money, it would be the GT4RS for a couple reasons: 1. Its a rarer car over the GT3, because it is the top sub-model in the Cayman model lineup. The GT3 is a mid-grade sub-model of the GT3 model. 2. It will be worth more in the future Both cars will be very fun to drive, and I most likely won't be able to drive either cars to their extreme limit anyways, so I can't really argue one against the other in terms of capability, so that is why I gave the reasons above on why I would choose the GT4RS over the GT3.

I feel like GT3 will always do better driven at 10/10 on a racetrack. However if you were to put both cars out there in the real world doing spirited driving on backroads GT4RS would be faster and more enjoyable. Because you're not driving it 10/10 on a mountain road or a twisty backroad. The 911 is the highest profit road car (excluding the SUV’s) in Porsche’s line up. It’s well known that the engineers were purportedly told to ensure the GT4 would never beat the GT3. You did an impressive comparison! Well done. Even with the all advantages of the GT3, the fact that the GT4 RS is only 6 second slower around a 20.8km track is impressive. The Cayman's performance is indeed being stifled by politics which is a shame; because it's 'ring lap time shows that the the 911's "little brother" has some serious thunder beneath those panels.

Going to sign a GT4RS with Weissach package (but without the wheels) today while coming from an manual 2022 GT4 MR. I think the RS gives me what the GT4 MR lacks - 80 PS more to pass slower cars like the GT3 does on the ring. Together with an future MR suspension upgrade (and maybe a coming aero kit by MR) it will give those GT3s a very hard time. And as you stated - it's definetly a better investment than a 992 GT3. Fewer will be build, it's more rare. And it delivers more excitement (at least for me). Those intakes right at the ear. My wife will hate it. ;)

Absolutely phenomenal work in this video. Your skill to analyze the car's behavior in certain scenarios is amazing. In Dutch, we would say: lekker gewerkt pik!

Just wondering if the GT4 RS has the upgraded front suspension as on the GT3? Sure would help turn in.

Of course they sandbagged it - They're a business, and a profitable one at that. You want upsell people, give them stuff to aspire to, make them figure out how they can just stretch that bit further to get the pricier piece - Us customers don't really like it, but it's very often how business operates. The GT4 definitely has its own thing going on too though, now - It's not some poor person's 911. Ultimately I look at this, being someone who waited 40 years to be able to own a 911 and could never afford a GT car, that it's still just amazing that we are seeing companies like Porsche build these models, and that there's choice and differing personalities in them. If you want the 911 bloodline and the engine has to be in the back, you've got it - If you want a mid-engined car, you can have it too. Want a GT version? No problem! It's not going to be long now before cars are all electric, so I'm looking at the sunset of the ICE with sadness (and resignation), and loving every last fucking one of these beautiful monsters coming out of Stuttgart. Great video, BTW!

GT4 performs quite bad compared to GT3 suspension and therefore also stability wise. Very disappointed in GT4 RS suspension and how it translates on track.

I think quite a lot of the unsettling we see in the video comes from the strange throttle application of the driver. Especially at the entry of the Brünnchen section it was quite apparent.

It's funny that double wishbone front and rear is amazing on porches. When the Honda S2000 has front and rear double wishbone and X bone frame since 1999.. Imagine a new design s2000 with a more powerful engine engine

Fantastic video Misha. To me the GT3 looks a lot more stable and composed, particularly over rumble strips and bumps in the road, which makes sense because of the suspension differences you mentioned, but also because the GT4 has all its weight towards the centre of the car instead of having the engine hanging out the back like the GT3. Doing that makes the car more nimble (think of spinning on the spot with your arms by your sides instead of outstretched) but also less stable on the very edge which I think is what we see here.
@jsquared1013
@jsquared1013 2 жыл бұрын
The "instability" is not from the weight distribution (mid-engine is more stable than rear engine) but due to better suspension kinematics.
@mcgherkinstudios
@mcgherkinstudios 2 жыл бұрын
@@jsquared1013 Wrong. As you move weight to the centre the car will rotate more easily. If you are on a seesaw, do you move more if you sit in the middle or at the end? The weight of the engine has to be accelerated sideways to rotate the car, if the engine only has to move a little because it is close to the centre pivot then less force is required to rotate the car and therefore it rotates faster. This is why mid rear setups are so popular. However this does translate to nervousness on the limit as the small rotations from one end finding or losing grip over the other result in larger rotations of the car and give a generally more nervous sensation. A rear engined car wants to rotate initially as the engine is accelerated to the side but its weight actually dampens the chassis’s nervousness and so it’s a little easier to control on the limit. Either way, this is not the only difference as the suspension is very different, as per my original post, but it all comes together and plays a part.

If only we knew someone who was an expert in driving the Cayman class of car on the Ring who could offer us some "Ice Cold" analysis. Yes, I think we would all have a great interest in what they would have to say.

I really really want a gt4 rs. I haven't felt this way about a car since getting my 2018 m2. But I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it while it's still in production. All my money is locked in investments right now. Only way I'd be able to afford it is to take out a mortgage in my house, or another type of collateral back loan. Which would be ok for me financially, but I dunno if I wanna do that. I hate being in debt and have paid cash for everything for the last 15 years.

I prefer the GT4 RS in non Weisach form because the non Weisach still has the weight savings of the carbon fiber hood and rear spoiler but they get painted body color which I prefer over the carbon fiber look. I do wish that Porsche made the magnesium wheels a stand alone option available on the base GT4RS since 10Kg of weight savings is very significant for rotating not sprung mass. But that may be a marketing strategy to get people to take the Weisach package to also be able to get the magnesium wheels.

With 493 hp, lighter weight and better weight distribution, the GT4 RS very well could be faster than the GT3 so we need to see what the GT3 RS does.

20kg lighter for 10hp less is not much of a difference. Suspension is better as well in the gt3. so probably not faster

It might be true that the 911 GT3 is ever so slightly better than the GT4. However, I do think most people will prefer GT4 RS instead of GT3 because economically, it makes more sense; you get the 4 Litre Flat-6 engine as found on the GT3, You get the bucket seats, you can get a 6 point harness and on... Also, we might see a lot of GT4 RS' on Nurburgring as well, just because of these stuff!
