I’ve spread the bag of sand on my driveway to dry it out and then sift it through window screen over a 5 gallon bucket. Figuring out a way to fasten the pickup tube to the bottom of the bucket for a gravity feed would probably help a lot. And at that point, you would want to hang the bucket from a heavy tree branch or an overhead beam. Thanks for the great video and your emphasis on eye protection.

Yep, thats what my dad did when we would get sand from our lake cottage. Get a 5-10g bucket with top, and put a fitting on the bottom for your media hose. Put it on or hang from a 6' ladder.

Keep the sand feed tube on top of the spray nozzle to prevent water from backflowing into the sand feed tube.

My brand new electric power washer @ 2050 PSI 1.8 GPM kept clogging up and did not produce any vacuum. Plan A: gas powered washer with 3500 psi and higher flow rate. Plan B: pressure and gravity fed using an automatic tire inflator to keep the PSI of the garden sprayer at ~30-40psi. A&B: a larger nozzle to increase flow and reduce back pressure (I believe that is the root of the problem).
@NerdyMeathead
@NerdyMeathead 2 жыл бұрын
did you try the tire inflator? I heard also to use pool filter sand
@boots7859

That electric is just to puny both in PSI and GPM. I had a similar one, and while it was great for washing the car and PW duty, the gas one is like 3500psi and 3+GPM. You can usually get a decent one cheap in the fall or winter.

Rucker made two good points, keep the sand feeder tube vertical, and as June Fletcher mentioned, duct tape it on the top of the wand to minimize blockage.

I put the sand feet tube from the top it helps alot from getting water in the sand feed tube. I also used window screen to sift the sand in a bucket to separate the rocks

Since it's difficult for water to run uphill, try raising the bag off the ground. Maybe set the bag in a wheelbarrow.

An often great place to hire out sandblasting is one or more of your local monument shops. That's where I've had truck frames blasted (I trailered mine in and left the trailer with them as a convenient work surface) so cheap although I just bought an industrial blaster I'll still take large projects to them to avoid the grit bath.

Loved your idea of using an air compressor to blow out a blockage , verttical tube plasment and taping the sand line, as well. A guy could also tape over the bucket top with a plastic covering to discourage sand wetting and clogging. My powerwasher is 3000 psi ,so I,m looking forward to getting to my truck .thanks guy .

I know this is an old video but white silica sand is basically quartz sand that is mined. The all purpose sand would have larger material mixed in. Might have better results with a graded silica sand. Would also depend on whats easiest to access where youre at. Running your all purpose sand through a screen is also a good idea like others said. Good video though, definitely looking into it for my projects.

Imagine shooting a shotgun at close range to a painted surface using various shot media. The first shell was filled with rubber shot. The second shell was filled with aluminum shot. The third was filled with steel shot. So, playground sand will help clean, but it will take a lot of it (rubber shot). The aluminum shot is better, but it is still relatively soft (silica sand). By the way, when you think of silica dust, think of asbestos. Asbestosis, and Silicosis are similar in the fact that both cause scar tissue inside the lungs that can't be undone. Silica sand is not the only hazard here; grinding, cutting, or chipping concrete, masonry, brick, or cinder block can create harmful dusts. Now to the steel shot - coal slag is the most economical hard shot media. The mineral itself is dirt cheap; but there are costs associated with it to verify its silica content (usually less than 1%), then bag it, then ship it across the states. Black Be..., I mean coal slag is not cheap, but neither is it (usually) worth recycling. Abrasives by Hardness (MOHS) Plastic 3.0 - 4.0 Walnut 3.0 - 4.0 Glass Bead 5.5 - 6.0 Silica Sand 5 - 6 Crushed Glass 5.5 - 7 Coal Slag 6.0 - 7.5 Olivine 6.5 - 7.5 Staurolite 7.0 - 7.5 Garnet 7.0 - 7.5

I know it's called SANDblasting, but you're not meant to use literal sand. That's why you had such a struggle. Proper blasting media comes in grades (similar to sandpaper grits) and different materials (steel, glass, plastic, ceramic to name a few). You'll have better, more consistent results and an overall more positive experience if you use the correct materials.
@brentholla8222
@brentholla8222 Жыл бұрын
🤦‍♂️ Sandblasting media can be literal sand. Many people have no problem using play sand with this method. Would sandblasting rated media work better at not clogging the siphon? No doubt. Will play sand still work and at a significantly reduced cost? Absolutely. 🤷‍♂️
@davidgaudette1549
@davidgaudette1549 Жыл бұрын
I have seen other videos with great results from play sand but it has to be dry and it helps to have a second man manning the sand feed. If I can't get a salvage frame in 2 weeks I will be trying this method on a frame and will post.
@boots7859
@boots7859 Жыл бұрын
BS. People have been using play sand, beach sand, any kind of sand for decades and decades. Depending upon whether you're a professional sander needed better results, or reuseable media, yes better media is available. It is certainly not necessary to spend on it for everyday Joe to clean up some panels or parts. Just use a real mask if using silica/generic sand as Silicosis is real and 1 good sanding interval can cause a lot of permanent damage.

Since you know rocks and tiny dibriey wii clog the unit why not be more selective in the type of sand used, a cleaner variety might be playsand which has laready been screeded for small stones and debries. Also a more secure container for the sand with disbursement from the bottom would be more effective and less problamatic!

wonder what would happen if you already had a small sand blaster from HF and just suppy air to sand tank while having pressure washer hooked up to apparatus

Some people have done that. One had the red steel media container HF sells which is supposed to be a gravity feed, and run a small compressor into it to keep it moderately positively pressured.

You really shouldn't be using straight up sand...the panels are gonna rust from the salt content in it in no time, you may not see it but it'll blow out under your fresh paint job quicker than it should.

There are some cheap products you can buy which you can add to your spayer soap compartment which prevent flash rusting. Heard one guy say to use laundry detergent, which is worth trying on a test subject as its very cheap. Or, just blast it, then run a blower or air compressor line over it, dry with cloth and spray on some primer.

It gets siphoned or sucked up the tube. If you're really curious look up the venturi effect hahaha. It may work, it really depends on the GPM/pressure of the washer. I think they have specs for what is needed on the Amazon part!

It takes about 1 minute to do some common sense planning. I got a $10 kiddie wading pool, and some 5 mil tarps which cover the back 180 degrees of the pool. Put several small holes in the bottom and put some screen and cloth over them. I can recover my sand easily, spread it out on a sheet of plastic in the backyard to dry, and screen and re-use. Next time I'm done I think I'll just toss it all into a metal 55g drum and place it over a tree trimmings fire to fast dry it. Still need to screen it, however saving $20-30 every time I want to do some blasting is kinda nice.

Wear a respirator any time you are in the blasting area and make sure you have adequate ventilation! Silicosis is real, and the fractured sand particles can hang in the air for hours! There is a reason nobody sells silica sand as a blasting media.
