In spoken English, your pronunciation is just as important as your rhythm! An important part of rhythm is thought groups - the way you pause between groups of words and use intonation to add meaning to your message. This video will teach you 3 rules to using thought groups - when to pause, when NOT to pause, and how to chunk your words together so they sound natural!

Oh my goodness Julie, this video has blown my mind. Even though I have reviewed this topic before, the way you explained it in this video has provided with a better understanding of rythm in sentences. Thank you so much for posting such informative videos like these ones.

Thanks a lot for your great efforts Could you tell me pls in this sentence "I go out every night" will the "t" in "out" be pronounced as a flap t cuz it is between two vowels "u" and "e" ,as we do in "out of" and "that I" ?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, exactly! You could pronounce the "t" in "out" as a flap - this is probably the most natural way to pronounce it, especially if you are speaking fast enough to link the words together. Thanks for your question - I hope this was helpful! :)

Hi Ali - Thanks so much for your question! It's difficult for me to provide a good answer in a comment, so the best way for me to help you with your English rhythm is if you came to my live English class at Julie's Conversation Club (courses.sandiegovoiceandaccent.com/courses/julies-conversation-club. I could help you during the live class! I hope to see you there :)

is a "thought group" the equivalent of a " tone unit" ?

Hi Tricanes - Thanks for your question. I'm not sure - I'd have to research "tone unit" a bit more before I could give you an accurate answer. Thanks for the comment! :)
