That happened after another Contest saw an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old competing (for different countries) and it caused controversy. And don’t forget Jean Jacques from the 1969 Contest, who represented Monaco 🇲🇨 when he was just 12 years old. Anyways, the younger performers now have Junior Eurovision, although because of JESC’s current age eligibility rules, 15-year-olds are currently shut out of both Eurovision (which has a minimum age limit of 16) and Junior Eurovision (which has an eligibility age range of 9-14).

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest didn’t exist yet at the time and they deceived the organizers into thinking Sandra was older than she really was. When word got out that she was really 13, the Swiss delegation tried to have her disqualified but the EBU wouldn’t budge.
