I remember hearing a story how Redd Foxx (RIP) helped out the legendary R&B singer Ruth Brown (RIP) after she had left the music business and was working regular jobs to just to get by. In 1975, she went to a club where Redd Foxx was in St Louis performing because a co-worker friend of hers didn't believe that she really knew Redd Foxx. When she got to the club she gave one of the employees a note to give to Redd Foxx and he said something to the effect of "Ruth Brown, bring her back here right now!". They met up and talked for awhile and after that Redd Foxx promised that he would send for her. About a week later he flew her out to LA and her career was resurrected big time because of Redd Foxx. She won Grammy & Tony Awards in 1989.

His disrespect treatment shows how we’re viewed. No matter how big you are or popular or proven in that instance, you’re still Black in this white guys world.

My family owned an auto body repair shop. One morning we came in and there was a Cadillac limo parked in our lot, the driver sleeping in the back. We woke him up and he told us a local cab driver had sent him to us for some repairs on his car. He had a minor accident while he was driving Della Reece's entourage behind the ambulance she was in while being rushed to a local hospital for emergency brain surgery. Ms. Reece was brought here because one of the world's greatest brain surgeons worked at a hospital here. Ms. Reece had actually collapsed onstage while taping "The Tonight Show." After her surgery she went on to have some of the greatest success of her life.

I remember when he died. It didn't seem like it was covered that much but it was in a time where there was no social media but didn't think much about it as i was only 12. I honestly didn't know how great Redd Foxx was as a comedian until years after he died listening to a tape of him. I think his (more cleaner more commercial friendly) Sanford and Son career overshadowed his career in Raunchy style Comedy as while he was an innovator, at the time he was doing that style of comedy I don't think it was widely known or accepted. He was raunchy and edgy before it was popular to be so. if he would have died in the Social media era, he would have gotten more props. I think he was pretty respected in the Black community, but I suspect Hollywood was only aware more of his Sanford and Son career, as he didn't do too many movies like a Richard Pryor. He was seeming though getting a resurgence right before he died as he just got through doing Harlem Nights (which he did great in) and started back TV with his sitcom.

He rose from doing raunchy 'party' records to being a genuine and loved comedian with a distinct character. No one else I can think of ever made that journey.
