Very nice talk by all three speakers. The old Naval Academy at Goa used to name its women's block Rani Laxmi Bai (who was a great land warrior), such was our ignorance of maritime greatness of Bharat. I hope as Ms Lekhi brought out, we pay tribute to Rani Abakka at the highest level.

Thrilled to know about the stitched ship project! India has had an unbroken chain of 5000 years of maritime history on the west coast itself and with such a huge coastline we've had many firsts across the Indian Ocean region. Harappan sailors were the first to discover and use the Monsoon winds, square sails on stitched ships and a compass to sail across the Arabian Sea on a deep sea-route to R'as al Junaiz and R'as al Hadd in the Oman Peninsula (also to Africa), besides using the coastal route to sail to Mesopotamia. Square sails are not meant for sailing along coastal routes (they need to sail with the wind) and we even have ethnographic evidence of sailors' deep sea adventures from a few generations ago! Not to forget, we can also use the stitching technology in modern materials.

Now this is exciting! I worked on the ‘ARK’ in Kentucky, (a boat that doesn’t float), and would relish an opportunity to work on this project! For it is my opinion and understanding that India’s sailing heritage goes far back in history from Mahabharata about 7K years ago to Valmiki’s Ramayana another 7K years ago that in book 4 chapter 40 verse 57 tells of Indra’s adventures to South America where the Candelabra of the Andes is carved into the mountain! Perhaps it was a ship of similar design! I also believe there is mention of this in the Veda’s. Look forward to following the project. Namaskaram ॐ नम: शिवय 🙏

I am interested in hearing more about the technology for the stitched planks and how it compares with First Dynasty Egyptian Sun boats. There has long been speculation about the origins of the ancient Egyptian civilization and whether it might have been derived from the Indus Valley Civilization, and if there is some merit to this speculation, perhaps Dholavira was the likely point of origin. As was pointed out, lumber for the construction of long vessels is in short supply both in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, and so the origin for the first construction of large vessels is more likely a place where lumber from large trees is more available. In the case of the Nile Sun boats, it seems that cedar from Lebanon proved to be more available at least in the long term along with oak from elsewhere in the Mediterranean, but that does not mean that the first origins of shipbuilding was not India or elsewhere in south-east Asia (except perhaps with Noah's Ark).

Even now people don't care much about the Navy. All they know is about Army and some know about Air Force. I feel sad about it.

just a quick reminder that the first amendment conflicts with the first commandment "thou shalt worship whoever you want" and that the declaration of human rights gives ME more rights than god. and a history lesson cos the USA is a secular nation, not many people seem to know that, and the founding fathers were at best deists and certainly not christian. hitchens became a naturalised american purely because of the constitution. the UK is officially christian, the US is officially secular. is it annoying that the satanic temple has the SAME RIGHTS as the church / mosque?
