Sanibel sea shells are famous the world over but sometimes it's harder to find the "good stuff" than other times. I wanted to visit a new beach, so I checked out Tarpon Bay Beach (Tarpon Bay Beach, 111 Tarpon Bay Rd, Sanibel, FL 33957) which was much nicer than I expected!
I wanted to check out this new beach to see if there was anything here that would compel me to go back. If the shelling was fantastic I might have chanced getting a ticket for overstaying my welcome but the shelling was just "meh" so I headed over to a beach I had good luck on a few days ago and a beach that I could park for as long as I wanted :) Bowman's Beach, Sanibel.
Sanibel sea shells are so fun to hunt down. I came thiiiiiiis close to getting my giant horse conch but it wasn't meant to be. I'm going to have to keep hunting.
I hope you enjoy your time with me while you go virtual shelling and I hope you learn a thing or two about the amazing Southwest Florida beaches I visit.

I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate so many things of this channel. I love your respect for the beach and the critters that call it home. I love that you don’t move the camera so fast I can’t focus on what you are talking about. I love your knowledge and passing it on. I love how you talk which shows your love of what you do. I have watched a few other channels and am so disappointed in their lack of respect for the sea critters. Thank you so much

I am actually on Sanibel from May 23-27!!! My family and I are staying here for my graduation trip from college. I’m so excited!!! My mom and I went shelling this morning, but didn’t have time to go to any other beaches. We can’t wait to explore!!! 😄 P.s. I found a gaudy nautica about the size of a pinky fingernail. And some small lightening welks. Nothing too big this morning, because we stayed close to our resort.

Good shelling luck to you! I'm finding that there are more goodies IN the water than there are on the beach so if you are feeling things with your feet when you're in the water, see if you can pull them up and see if there are shells! Congrats on the goodies you already found!

I adore your channel! I was so excited for our recent trip to Florida, I was going to put all I have learned from your channel into play. I was so ready to shell! Double red flags flew the entire 10 days, high winds and waves between 5 and 8 feet, absolutely no shelling! I did brave the stinging sand blasting for about an hour and searched the high rack line for mini and tiny shells since that was all there was to be had. Big shell score were two moon shells and a scotch bonnet that had a hole in it but as you say it was a slow shelling day so so took it. The evening before we left the wind suddenly stopped and we were able to take a nice beach walk but the waves were still surging and too dangerous to try to shell. Despite this we had a great time hanging out in the bay and enjoying the sea life there. Keep up those great videos!

I'm sorry your weather and waves didn't cooperate but congrats on your Scotch Bonnet! I have a really beat up one with a hole and it's still with my prized collection until I can replace it :) Slow shelling days are a real thing. I panicked recently when I wasn't finding goodies to share! I hope you can maybe make it back to FL one day and the winds and tides will be in your favor!

Well now I know what that thing was that was in the closet at the condo we rented. When I first saw it I thought it was a pooper scooper and thought that was odd since the condo we rented said no pets. If that does not show I am not from Florida or anywhere near the ocean, not sure what else will. Its ok you can laugh because I did. 😂. Not sure if anyone else would like to see this but could you do a video on the different tools used for shelling and how to use them and the difference between in water and on beach shelling?

LOL! Yes, that sand flea scooper is used a bunch by us beach folk for getting shells and shark teeth :) I will always show what I'm doing and what tools I'm using. Lol, when I was in Florida from January through March of this year, I went to Cabela’s & bought a sand flea rake for shelling. Even the employees didn’t know what I was talking about when I asked for it. I made my son use it to scoop shells on Sanibel. He’d scoop and let us look through the piles, but after awhile, he said he didn’t want to do it anymore because it reminded him of yard work. 😂 He did it for a while longer & I was happy.

Hi my shelling friend, What a difference a beach can make, even when it's on the same island. Has Tarpon Bay in the shelling community a name for great finds? Girl, I can feel your pain about that Horse conch! I don't mind at all if you find one without the camera with you. Show and tell us when you're back home with that beauty! It would make me feel very awful if you left the find of your life behind because you didn't bring your camera! Buying that kayak is amazing! So many places you can visit now. I'm curious when he'll make it's maiden voyage to find great shells. Thank you for this amazing trip to the beach, the sun and the warmth! Hello Netherland Beach Friend! Yes, it was a bummer about the horse conch but I would have never left it behind! I'd prefer my first find to be while making a video but if it's not believe me I'm taking it home! The kayak isn't going to work - BUMMER! After assembling and with some input from the husband I've decided I'm going to get a heavy, traditional kayak. I know which one I want I just have to find all the gear I need to cart it around! The water here has been beyond beautiful. I hope it hold up for the video I have planned for next week! Hope you have a great week!

Hi , another newer beach access is Gulfside City Park Beach (Algiers) Just 20 minutes west/south with a closer parking lot that connects directly with the beach. This access is actually the location where an old ferry was brought onto the beach , faced up into a beautiful hotel but the owner died before he opened , it was then abandoned as his wife was not interested. Finally removed many years later. I though you were going to go to Tarpon bay ......not a beach but great wild life area in the ding darling preserve. Cheers Warren

There are a bunch of other entrances down there and I finally got myself a parking pass so I can park and not worry about paying the hourly fees! Well my daughter is treating me to a long weekend and taking me to the west coast for catsitting. Going to Punta Rassa and Sanibel which I have never been to. I am grabbing everything I can get my hands on, so I can't wait to load up. Like you said grab everything. Thinking about moving to the west coast one day. I just think the shells are so much nicer than the east coast. Maybe I'll bump into you SWB Beach life.

I found a huge lightning whelk one the other day and saw the holes also. So I'm curious about how much filming you did with your GoPro mounted on your head? Pretty knobless ffc. I did have the head mount just in case but I didn't get in the water this day. Too cold (don't make fun of me)! I am super bummed about the kayak because I'm going to return it. I need something with a little more substance and I don't think the one I got will really be safe for me to use to get from island to island so I'm going to go ahead and get a traditional one. Shelling September in Sanibel is pretty okay. You will most likely find all the common guys and maybe a couple of more unique shells. It doesn't really start to pick up until October and then in the winter the shelling is pretty great. It's never guaranteed and you never know what you're going to find but I've shelled all year long and I always end up finding something worthwhile.

I recently spent a week on Marco Island and went shelling for the first time. I was happy I had watched so many of your videos before I went so I had some idea of what to look for. I did find a tiny little horse conch tumbling in the water - one 1cm long and an even smaller nutmeg! Those were the only horse conch and nutmegs I found, but I was so happy, nonetheless. I do have a question for you though... I found many, many Florida fighting conchs and fell in love with them. I noticed though that most have a very thick shell at the aperture and some are quite thin. At first I thought it was just the difference between juvenile vs. adult, but I found several juveniles with thick apertures as well. So my question is... Why the significant difference between them and is it possible that the thin ones are a different subspecies?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they're a subspecies - I think those differences are just genetic, much like the coloring. I do think the thinner ones are a bit more rare, as the thicker ones are what I normally find, but I have found plenty of those thinner ones too. It's one of the things that interests me about all the snails and shells. It's also a big frustrating because some of them look so similar! PS- if you have any that have that green slime on the outside it comes right off if you soak it in 100% bleach 🤗

I sure can! I'll try to squeeze that information into one of my upcoming videos. Basically you're looking to scoop up shells you can't get to either in the surf or deeper in the water. I've scooped along the waters edge for the shells I can see but I can't get to, and then I've scooped on the ocean floor when I feel things with my feet, but I can't grab them. Then you can either dump your scoop onto the sand to see if you've got anything or you can just visually look through what you've scooped if you're in the water. I hope this helps!
