The principal of KISS , , 'Keep It Simple Stan' is my recommendation for emergency power. Put the generator in a semi permanent place outside , a area where you can access it and start it , make a nice weather proof cover for it , perhaps route a extra length of exhaust pipe away from the house if the noise of the smell is a issue ,,,,,,,. and to solve the amount of hours it can run for before running out of gas ,,,, connect it to a 44 gallon drum , and keep it full. 2 drums with a change of valve would be even better. How long would that last ,, surely a week or two ? Use the generator for limited lighting , and not try to power heavy loads like clothes driers and electric heaters for too long , and it should last well. When the generator wears itself out , kick it to the curb and get another one -- all nice and simple , and best of all , you get to keep that 15K in your pocket.

Generac seems to be the neatest solution if you have natural gas already piped in -- LPG can be quite expensive in some parts. Solar is OK if you live in sunny climes, and can pay back over time if you can feed your excess energy back to the supplier. However, for simplicity, my choice would be Generac.

James Bowie I agree with you on this. It seems the most cost effective and practical solution. Have you looked into Listeroids? They are replica (Indian) of the famous British Lister generators - no longer made. They tick along (on diesel, but could be converted to natural gas I suppose), at a grandfatherly clock 600 RPM. There are videos on YT to look at. 😄

I disconnect antenna, remove coax line away from antenna. Every home should employ a whole-house spd/tvss for external and internal surges. For home use, the Generac line is fine. Many thanks and be well Stan! de K4WRF

I have installed a lot of small generators for standby power. I would not recommend a Generac. Reason is the mechanics that deal with them don't feel like they are reliable. Finding a small generator that runs off natural gas is expensive and there are not too many available. Most have to be modified to run off of NG. That's why they cost more. Maybe in your local that is different. The cost depends on just how much of your home you want to carry as a load. I use Cummins Onan for small jobs (50 KVA). But where ever possible I eliminate the use of a U.P.S. I try to stay away from the typical system and use a charger/battery system. Less conversion loss and heat. I use a lot on 24 volt systems and use sealed type communications batteries. If your rig runs of of 12 volts you can assemble a very reasonably cost system that would provide back up power for many hours. Generally speaking the charger needs to be rated at least 1/7 of the total battery amp hour load in it's capability. You can buy batteries that will last 10 years and even 15 years (expensive). But the sealed battery is the way to go. An AGM type battery is such. Universal Batteries is a good start but there are many others.,

Stan, there are a lot of antenna switches out there to allow your transceiver to alternately use one of two antenna But if you turn it around, one antenna can be directed to ground or to your transceiver as needed.

I have watched many of your great tutorials on KZbin, this was the first rant/introspective type video and I enjoyed it. Love the title - "Sanitized Lightning", that is what grabbed my attention. Have you considered switching your gasoline generator over to propane? Not sure how much propane would be needed for the outages you have, 6+ hours, but it may give you more runtime between having someone fill the tank propane. I have a Generac 15-KW that operates off of natural gas and powers most of the house excluding the hot-tube and kitchen oven. The longest it has run was when hurricane Ike came through Ohio in 2008. It ran for 154 hours straight excluding two shutdowns to add oil. I agree with the lack of scientific understanding of our current president, especially his comment about injecting "Light" into the body. I receive narrow-band ultraviolet light therapy once a week at my dermatologist, kind of like a tanning bed, but you stand upright in it for about 6 minutes, but that is for a skin condition I have; it doesn't go into my internal organs, LOL. I am a baby-boomer and I imagined by now both Moon and Mars colonies and my flying car! I learned to fly in the mid-eighties, so it doesn't take much imagination for me to see me leaving the road behind, bypassing traffic and flying as the crow flies, but don't belive I will see a practical flying car in my lifetime, which frustrates me. I am also disappointed that war, racism, and hatred still are in the world. As a species, we have a long way to go. Keep up your good work on KZbin and enjoy living on the mountain; hope you get to stay there for a long time. 73 (KE8FNA).

I use a Generac and manually connect it with a safety breaker that requires the main power be disconnected before the generator is switched in. Look for a package, mailed from Eaton, OH 45320 this morning, to arrive by the end of the week. 73 & God Bless.

Hi Stan... if you are serious about backup power... a champion generator might be your best choise.... had generacs... nope... have champion now... propane fuel would be most dependable.... if you really want solar... watch out for the terrible rf noise that comes from controllers.... best of luck et 73 wb0zlx

Stan if I could vote for you to become president I would. I can't get over the fact that the USA seem to have elected the village idiot as president. I deeply worry for my friends on the other side of the pond. On the generator note though a decent generator with remote start and automatic switchover sounds like a good idea with your foot issue. It's certainly got to be preferable over going into a care home type environment especially at the moment.
