Hey! If you're thinking of purchasing the Keylab Mk 3 just wanted to share my experience across two generations of the Arturia Keylab! 1.) Keylab 88 MK 1 - Off the bat the velocity was wonky. One of the most notable issues was that when you would use the sustain pedal it would randomly cause the keyboard to play a full 127 velocity note. A couple of ear-shattering bursts later, I brought this up with their support basically to get a shrug and say it was a known issue but they didn't have a fix yet. Ok lol. I ended up re-selling the board before they could fix it (they probably never did). 2.) Keylab 49 Mk II The pitch bend stopped working correctly about a year after I purchased it. When I would bend the pitch up it would go to "0" value then only then would it start going up. This happened to me during a live gig so you can imagine that it was embarrasing to say the least. When I raised this up with support they basically ignored me. Also wanted to note that my Mark I basically stayed at home with a dust cover the entire time I had it. (due to the pandemic), and the Mark II was used ONCE during a gig. Just wanted to put this out there for any prospective buyers! Awesome software but the hardware leaves much to be desired especially at the price point they're selling it at. I live in a non-First World country, so the repair price is horrendously bad and I'll probably just sell this and replace it with a Korg Keystage in all honesty lol.

I highly recommend this Keylab MK3 if you don’t already have a Keylab mk2 or don’t need poly aftertouch. It does however have channel aftertouch. Mine arrived yesterday and I already love it. The build quality is top notch and the keys have the right amount of weight and bounce. I bought a Keylab Essential a year ago and instantly returned it due to its spongy keys. This Keylab MK3 however is a keeper. Its quality can only be experienced firsthand. With Analog Lab, it instantly becomes an Astro Lab. The screen is very clear. I’ve made a few user presets for upcoming gigs and I can’t wait to use it in a live setting.

Hi Sanjay! Hope you guys are well! At last, the KeyLab MKIII is here. It definitely got some nice improvements, especially with the screen and its interface. However, as I had the MKII (before giving it to my nephew), I wouldn't upgrade to the MKIII as the upgrades are not that significant. However, for someone looking out forna premium mido controller and doesn't want to pay the higher price from Native Instruments S series, then this is the one to get! Keylabs 49, 61 and 88 MKII have 1 CV input and 4 CV outputs for integration with modular synths. You should check them out, since they have more buttons, pads, and outputs than this one. Regular Aftertouch is fine on MKII versions, too... I have found that I prefer poly aftertouch on grid controllers rather than on regular key beds. Launchpad X and Pro are good examples of this when creating custom controller modes.

@VentureNW3 ай бұрын
meh... sort of disappointing to be honest. I am leaning heavier toward the Push, at this point, unless Novation drops a nuke on the scene. The screen is too small and basic, keys are not lit like the NI, not even poly aftertouch and definitely not 'full touch', when they invented it. Like NI, its a bit tied to its own ecosystem (not as badly, but still). I have seen a couple of Novation hints on Instagram, as of late, and I am thinking a new SL MKIV is coming. One can hope. With no great keyboard controllers, I am starting to think the Push just makes better sense. I am probably wrong, but it is what it is. Its a smaller footprint and I do like that. My keyboardist/guitarist hands can learn.

Keyboard makers need to know if there's a feature in the existing model that is a "PLUS" point, you should not mess with it in the newer models unless there's an innovation and is proving to be convenient. Also it is just better to listen to consumers and innovate than be rigid and cut off existing features that were not an issue.

It is strange how the previous generation of Arturia fought side by side with Native Instruments and the decision between one or the other had to be based on small details of the workflow. Now it seems like they've moved away from the competition to pursue their own niche... which still doesn't make sense because the mk3 series doesn't have polyphonic aftertouch to control the synths, the new standard. Great device so far; missed opportunity as they could have added the buttons in the encoders, making them push encoders! Also not sure what is the deal with Arturia or any other company making midi controllers and their inability to make a controller with programmable banks... Every VST these days has like 50+ parameters to control, so why don't they just make banks for faders, buttons and encoders, so when you map them for VSTs you actually map them all, instead of having to pick just 9 of them? Can't be that hard, right?

I would still buy this over an NI board. One thing to note is if you don’t have Komplete Kontrol open you lose 75% of the features like the scale and arpeggiator features. Occasionally my transport controls just stop working. This probably doesn’t have that issue and it has drum pads. I won’t be buying another NI controller when I upgrade
@ianmeredith79693 ай бұрын
Amazing! I have the last incarnation, and think you are spot on about how much better it might have been were there displays to show what the knobs were actually controlling etc. I am very tempted to sell some stuff and get one of these, but might go NI as I think that would incline me to explore Kontakt/Komplete which frankly remains as yet a pointless purchase as I never use NI anything. I am a bit shocked they removed the CV/gate connectivity as I have a number of semi-modular hardware synths where that might have proven useful at some point, though I've never had cause to use such to date.

The best pads I’ve ever had are in my old Korg M3. Only 8, but they felt soft and nuanced. Arturia’s should come with a miniature hammer. But, I’ve got the 16 pads on my KeyLab Mk2 programmed for kick, a few snare articulations, 3 Toms, 3 cymbals, and a host of high hat articulations. I agree with Sanjay on placement. I never liked the faders on the right and the pads on the left. Sticking with my Mk2
@b3owu1f3 ай бұрын
It's a shame they don't allow you to move the right side to the left, and left side to the right. Seems like that would have been an innovative way to customize the faders/knobs for those that prefer left hand control of those. I agree with you that this seems like a minor update over the previous version. I'd prefer the 12 pads that are responsive to 16 not so great myself, but single note aftertouch is not as good as NI's board, and their screen is much better. The NI board is great with the lack of faders and pads though it's not quite the right one. What I really want is a board that allows me to position pads, faders/knobs, an adjustable angled large screen like NIs, and a joystick with lock/free modes to allow for x/y pad movement, and pitch bend/modulation movement. Also.. full RGB per key and all knobs/faders with screens indicating their values easily readable. I feel like I am going to have to build my own damn keyboard to get what I really want. Gees.

I was like...the premium Leylab is the one keyboard I can count on for that 4x4 grid layout other than Akai's mpk249-61 2 Series....then they only add 12 lol. And based on your review the pads appear to be more sensitive and bigger...so that hurts more lol. I guess it allowed for them to keep a much smaller form factor up top...but again...the software it's compatible with has 4x4 drum samplers....logic, Ableton etc 🙄

I sold my KeyLab 88 MK2 last week, and was looking at the Komplete 88 Mk3. After this review, I'm not going to wait and see if Arturia comes out with an 88. Already have V Collection, so the included sounds add no value for me.
