In this video, I review the new Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X and Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones. And I compare them to the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones and the open back 990s as well. In this video I’ll tell you if I think you should upgrade from the DT 770 or DT 990 headphones to the Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X and Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones. I talk about sound quality, build quality and what you can expect from mixing and tracking with these headphones.

I have 32 and 250 ohm Beyers. The 250's are probably clearer (2 diff models), but I think the differences are more in how they modified the old DT driver for 32 ohm vs a totally new driver. I don't buy that higher impedence makes a better speaker, and I believe 80-250 ohms was a utilitarian design choice by BD. Consider super high end, money-no-object studio monitors - if it mattered they'd be making these with greater impedence than 4-8 ohm.
@hrodebertcoad9848
@hrodebertcoad9848 2 жыл бұрын
@@JN-qj9gf Monitors have a bit more... "natural impedance" let's say, in that they have to deal with a lot more air pressure when they operate compared to the much smaller diaphragms in headphones. I believe it's usually about damping, as you'd notice some cheaper low impedance headphones sound muddy even if the general construction of the drivers is sound. Usually this is the results of sounds not dying off fast enough. I guess speakers would also have the benefit that the noise is also typically way quieter than sound from the main signal that's driving it. There are plenty of other factors of course, sound is a complex and complicated thing to engineer for.
@YOGIKRASPRO

In a nutshell you can’t compare directly impedance of two completely different headphones. Dt 700 pro x has new designed transducer which acts differently than old one used in dt 770 pro. Because those are built in different way they sound different. Unless your signal source has high impedance (greater than 5 ohms) you will be fine with 700 (couse their impedance is a bit lowwer than 50 ohms). Low impedance in those headphone also make them more versatile. You should also have in mind that lots of headphones made for audiophiles has low impedance. In summary both headphones have unique sound and both are extremely clear and using them is joyful experience. I hope this makes sense for you. Regards

I had it and I sold it. I will definitely go back to the DT 770 Pro 80 ohm as a secondary headphone, but I think the right direction would be to add a bit more cash and buy the NDH 20 from Neumann. The quality of the components is terrible. For example, the jack connectors in the cables were incorrectly made - one of them broke, while in the other, not yet used, I noticed badly poured sleeves. I immediately decided to send them back to the website - the complaint was accepted. Less than two months have passed since we returned from the complaint and headbnand fell apart. I doubt that they are still fully made in Germany. I am leaning towards China rather. And moving on to the sound itself. If you are looking for headphones for the production of electronic music - techno, trance, house, they can do their job, but do not reckon with the fact that the Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X are neutral or close to neutral headphones. It's hard to mix the middle with them. The treble is warm enough, delicate, and also subtle, and certainly not so analytical, raw (as in the case of the DT 770 PRO) that your ear could get "glare" and catch inappropriate harmonics that you need to get rid of, for example. Similarly to this situation - and the other way around. They are definitely headphones that color the sound, and I had them for 8 months and if someone tried to persuade me to buy them again, I would categorically refuse. Beyerdynamic let me down this time, and I had hoped for him as a fan of closed-circuit headphones during music production.

I bought both the 700 Pro X and the 770 Pro 80 ohm. Here's my two cents: - The 700 doesn't just have lower treble than the 770, it feels like there is no treble at all. All of the air and detail we enjoy in music, gone. Yes, the 770's treble can get a little excessive at times but it's still better than having almost zero treble in my opinion. - The 700 has better sub-bass extension which is great but the mid-bass has a higher bump than on the 770 which makes kick drums annoyingly overpowered. They've replaced the treble spike of the 770 with a mid-bass spike instead. Pick your poison. - The 700 sounds a bit muffled compared to the 770. Maybe it's the new thick filter fabric they put over the drivers, but the 770 sounds a little clearer and it's not just the higher treble giving off that impression. I've heard other reports of the 700 and 900 Pro X sounding like there is a veil over the music. - The 700 has a narrower soundstage than the 770. Not by much, but it's noticeable. - The 700 has a much higher clamp force which makes it way less comfortable than the 770, despite having deeper earpads. And I don't have a very big head. In conclusion, I'd go for the 770 Pro as it has a clearer sound, a wider soundstage, is more comfortable and cheaper. The treble spike and lower sub-bass can easily be fixed with EQ and the 770 Pro can easily be modded to have a detachable cable (just look at a KZbin tutorial). The 80 ohm version has just enough volume when driven by a phone but the 32 ohm version and 700 Pro X can get louder. Hope that helps some people make a more informed decision. Peace!

I'm not sure about "if you have 770, you don't have to switch to 700 Pro X". I tested both headphones, head to head, switching from one to another in the music hardware store, and found significant difference between DT 770 and DT 700. After I quickly got used to 700 sound stage, warmth and smooth bass tone, 770 sounded so cheap compared. I tested few tracks, and was listening to both headphones for 10 minutes straight, and after 5 minutes I was sure 770 is not for me, and I must go with 700 Pro X. Also both guys in the store recommended 700 right from the bat. What worst, I entered the store with the list in my hand, and 770 was on top.

Do NOT buy the Pro x series the headband is poor quality and breaks a lot. I bought 3 replacements from beyerdynamic partner in my country. I have now had 3 broken headbands within 3 months or completely normal use. The glue that holds the leather to the plastic just lets go and starts hanging. I havnt seen a single bigger youtuber talk about these issues but there is forums full of the complaints and Beyer dont care, they just want you to pay to ship in the headphones and determin if it should be repaired or not. When in reality they should take a look at the headband and redesign it with better quality.

Good review. You stated that the 770's 250 ohm version have better separation/imaging than the 80 ohm version. So, have the 700's, with 48 ohm resistance, have the same or better separation/imaging than the 770's 250 ohm? What has been sacrificed in the 700 to accommodate the flexibility of plugging in pretty much anywhere without a hp amp?
@nicktan4530
@nicktan4530 2 жыл бұрын
Hello let me explain to you. I have the Dt 770 250 ohms the old version. The truth, is yes 250 ohms is clearly the superior ones in seperation/imaging although your mileage may vary depending on your ears and source. 80 ohms have more oomph to the bass response. I have no idea about the 48 ohm resistance, no it does not have the same separation/imaging. For watever reason, the impedance have different tuning and have no idea why, over signature remains the same. The sacrifice of the lower impedance are less performance of separation/imaging, tighter bass response and detail as well as clarity. Not as less distortion but to the human ear, its beyond our hearing in terms of distortion and noise.

Here's my two cents; I have many headphones because I mix on headphones, I believe in mixing on headphones no matter that anyone tells me. The best headphones I have ever found at Sony mdr 7506 -- they take the trophy again and again, here's why. These Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones DO sound more neutral... you can see on Rtings that they rate high and the frequency response curve is more flat. With mdr 7506s the low end is boosted a little bit, so why are mdr 7506s better? Not just because they sound more bassy (what everyone wants right), it's not because of that... it helps you hear problems in the low end. I have a song that was my most difficult to mix ever. I put it out online and a few months later when in to remix it because I just couldn't get it right... on the DT 770s the old mix sounds better than the new mix... yet on every other pair of headphones i own you can tell the old mix had a terrible boomy thud to the kick that sounds terrible; If I had ONLY ever used DT 770s I would have never heard that at all.

The 1770 would be closer to what you're used to since it uses the same driver as the 1990. Highly suggest for you to go to a shop and give them both a listen and decide from there. 1770's are really aggressive though, a completely different experience to the 1990

Great review, Sanjay C does this kind of review so well! I like the 48 Ohm rating of the ProX, plus the removable cable and other parts, so I've gone with the 700 ProX. The problem with 250 Ohm headphones is they don't work with most instruments like keyboards and grooveboxes, or listening devices such as phones, tablets ect. as you'll need a headphone amp to drive it. This is not practical for mobile music making. The 770s do come in a 80 Ohm version but are not much cheaper than the ProX in Australia. The 770s are about the same price as the Sonys here as well, which is weird!

i bought the 700 Pro X and the sound is great, but i dont know if my head is unusually large or they are super tight. they are literally sucking out air of my skull through my ears making them very tiring to wear. i always had a strong preference for open back, but wanted to also have the sound of a closed back at hand. I even put it around a bucket a few days to expand it. No success. Any thoughts?

thanks for the review! i was hoping for more elaborate review on sound quality! the rest is easy to see (detachable everything) can you clarify 1) even though the 700s are closed, and technically open back 900s can have better separation for purpose of MIXING, you still think that the 700s can be used for mixing? this is confusing only bec even Beyerdynamic on their catalog states 3 out of 5 for 700s for mixing, and i think 4 or 5 for 900s 2) the 700 pro x reviews say they have too much bass = more than 770s (enjoyable sub bass for audiophiles but not necessarily for producers/ mixers). Did you feel that wayl? 3) did the 900s sound Too bright (some reviews say) so overall my ques. which is more neutral 700 vs 900? (seems like 700 have hyped bass, more neutral highs compared to 900 , vs 900 has "normal" unhyped bass, boosted highs (sometimes sharp and excessive) , but also a wider / bigger soundstage due to being open i do appreciate that you mentioned that 700s are more useful bec. they allow you to cut out outside noise (most pros still promote open backs for mixing)

Hi Sanjay, greeting from Indonesia. I’m in the search for a pair of headphones that versatile enough to listen to the music and some video. I only use it for consuming media not mixing or producing any music. Also I listen to wide array of genre except hip hop/rap. Sometimes I still listening to electronic music tho. My previous hardware are a Senn PX 200(old gen) Bought it when I still on Junior High School. Senn 4xx(forget the exact type) and now I’m using AKG K420 and Sony XM4(tws) Should I go with DT 700 instead of cheaper DT 770 80ohm? I reluctant to buy another peripherals like expensive DAC or amp just to achieve the perfect experience of it. For now I’m just gonna use it from my iphone via Apple dongle and in the future I’m planning to buy a M2 MBA and probably buy an amp/digital streamer for my audio setup in the living room. What do you think about my situation? Thank you.

When I sold my m50x and msr7 I was looking for some Beyers, mostly for studio and everyday use. I almost bought dt770 (it would have been tough choice because of nondetachable cable and high impendance) but I found Beyerdynamic Custom Studio. I am really surprised why those are so underrated. They have all pros of Dt770 and of course detachable cable (3 in the box, coiled also), are made of aluminium and hard plastic and have impendace around 80ohms. I can see that Custom Studio are currently sold off on the EU website, so they will probably get rid of them and replace them with the X PRO line.

I have the same thoughts. When I bought Custom Studio, I just ordered a second one as a spare. They are great. In addition, they have a bass control, and the price was also very favorable. They cost less than 200 euros. They don't have the tiring treble as in the 770, and they are also very detailed.

The Audio Tecnica M50x have less bass than the 700 Pro X. The sub bass in the 700 Pro X is better than the M50x. the 700 are warmer, not so harsh on the ears at high frequencies, overall the 700 Pro X has a better sound and sound stage than the Audio Technica. My M50x have been made redundant. One thing I have noticed about the 700 Pro X is that if your mix sounds crap, then these are reliable at getting it right. Another point of note. The 700 Pro X sound similar to my Yamaha HS8s monitors in the way of frequency response. Too me that's a very good thing. When mixing with the M50x then listening on the HS8 things did not sound right, but now it sounds very similar. I do urge you to try the 700 Pro X if you are using a pair of Yamaha HS8s, then you will understand where I am coming from.

The majority of the rest of us buy these to listen to music and enjoyment, and not for music production or podcast or critical listening. So, this review along with 99% of other reviewers only talks about how good headphones are for "music production, mixing, recoding". We don't care about those, some do, but the rest of us don't because we buy these to listen to music and gaming at home so that we don't disturb other family members or rock your apartment neighbors. How good are these for "music enjoyment" and or "gaming"? and for music enjoyment, yes, talk about if these are good for EDM, rock, vocal (female and male), string, classic.

I've bought dt770 250ohm, but I 'm not satisfied with its performance. I can't match my old Sennheizer HD250 Linier II for sound separation, which I can't find it again in market. dt 770 too sharp in HF and bluring the LF. Its V shape is too sharp. So here that "Rush" bass become a "Toto" bass. And the Sanjay's Voice became so many "ch" that not too exposed in my HS7

Sir, thank you for your content. Very confusing, you must spend time mixing. As an old fart mix engineer, may I point out that having a constant (ie monitoring system) is ones datum. So I agree with what you said about don't change if ones current headphones are still working perfectly, you seem at odds promoting something that you don't need. I am more concerened that you will use something that you promote and end up losing yourself within your mixes trying to navigate backwards and forwards!!!!! Not easy I use 770 Pros and they work. The point I was trying to make to any mix engineer is to stay with what you know; as that is the basis of your audio knowledge. Everyone has an input audio memory and it is judged by what oneself hears. Therefore to make a mix, it is the knowledge of what one hears, and the apparatus on which one hears it that is the Most Important. Sorry, I sound like an arsehole. What I hear, is different from what you hear. In order for me to talk about an issue that requires a view that encompasses you and me, requires me to use the form "one" that's whats is for. I was always made fun of at school, that's why I ran away to a recording studio and now have an alcohol problem, but it is much better than the crap I came from, plus I did have a couple of number 1's in America, so go figure.....................................waffle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,off X

@SrKulay

Honestly, taking physics into consideration, they won't scale as well as higher impedance headphones - which should just mean that you won't need as much of a powerhouse headphone amp to drive them properly, check out DMS review of the 560s where he compares scaling with the HD650, I think that should translate well here. Also, he's working on his review of the DT700 and DT900 pro X

I bought the 770 Pro 80 Ohms a few weeks ago as of this comment thinking they, and the 990 Pro would be around without an upgrade for quite some time. And not even a week with them, Beyerdynmics comes out with the 700 and 900 Pro X's. Ugh! As tempting as it is to want to upgrade, I really do enjoy the tuning of the 770s and they make my music so much more dynamic and spacious. As far as that treble peak everyone seems to have issues with, I find it offers a level of detail that I really like. I think maybe the complaints about it come from those who listen to their music way too loud which can really drive that 8k peak pretty hard. However, at lower to moderate volumes, it's very tolerable and welcome in my book. And out of all the headphones I've owned in the 40+ years I've been an audiophile/music lover, the 770's are the only ones that have an audible and present sub-bass. If it's in the music, they present it so distinctly. Even if the sub-bass is not in the music, I can hear some trailing ends to it if it's out there waiting to be presented. In fact, despite its well-presented, detailed and punchy bass, these are not basshead cans! I don't know how Beyerdynamics does it but that's a quality I will never give up! But dang, those 700 Pro X's! --sigh--

Before I even watch it, since I already own a DT770 pro, the 96dB makes them sound quiet. The 80ohm model is somehow worse to drive than the 250 ohm. The 250 ohm version and the 32 have more detail. The Pro X while lower impudence, has newer gen drives that produce the same sound as the 250ohm does but cleaner, and they are actually louder since they can go up to 110db at just 48ohm. Now let's see if I was right :)
