Thanks for the comparison, very helpful. I can imagine uses for both. I've been using the Sankens but looking to also add a 4060 or two.

Nice comparison. Here in Budapest big productions tend to use DPA-s. Personally I like the Sanken just a little more, since it's built like a tank. Some actors, talents doesn't give a duck about the mics we put on them, and DPA-s are easier to brake, and the thin cable gets tangled almost every time. I think DPA-s sound more natural, but for my personal kit I bought COS 11-s, and I'm happy with them.

Thanks to you, and Curtis Judd, I am coming up to speed very quickly. What I have learned is that the mics themselves are more important than the entire unit, and that it may be necessary to have a broader mic selection for one’s transmitters than simply the one that came with the kit. The Sanken does sound brighter to me. I agree with you that, if I were using a typical mount placement, the DPA would sound better. However, if it is necessary to hide the mic among clothing, hats, or hairdos, then the COS-11 would probably fare better because of the coloration. Thank you for the very practical demonstration. You are quite helpful!

These comparisons are always eye-opening (ear-opening?). I've been using a B6 for awhile, and honestly I'm not a huge fan. I've never had the chance to mount them in hair or on a head, and so I feel their small size advantage is wasted when I have to bulk them up with mounts under clothing anyway. For that reason, I've really eyed a COS-11.However now I'm leaning more to the 4060, since I feel it sounds much more clearer and natural. But perhaps you can run another test in a noisier environment to see how they fare there :)But my goodness; after listening to the two lavs, I went back to the beginning to listen to your 8040 - such a nice sounding signal. Really emphasizes how there's nothing quite like a boom.

The nice thing with DPA is that you can also do some beautiful ambience takes in ORTF config
@ryanholmes36886 жыл бұрын
Love the sound of both, DPA would be my choice in an ideal world but as I work quite low budget and well honestly I need a mic that can withstand the day to day struggles on set so the COS-11 gets my vote. If I was to rent however give me a DPA.
@mikepirtle61555 жыл бұрын
We tried out the DPA mics first before we ended up getting the Sankens. The cost was just a little too much on the DPAs and that cord was just a little to delicate for the talent I work with everyday. The DPAs do sound really good but I think the Sankens are close enough that they are a better deal for us.

I own both, The DPA has better background noise reduction and warmer tone. The sanken is also very good but i notice a bit more background noise. You'll be happy with either one.
@mistico9116 жыл бұрын
Personally I use the two microphones since long time in motion capture for the video game. I think the DPA 4060 is better for the scene with screams and action. The COS 11 distortion more easily, it is less good for sound pressure management, in addition it is much more mid range than the DPA which is more neutral.

We use mostly DPA's now for our productions. They blend better with a mkh50 on a boom than the cos11 do. We still use Cos11's in noisier environments as they seem to reject background noise a little better than the DPA's. I do have to give them a little more juice with the transmitter than the cos11's. Buy plenty of extra caps! you will lose them. Great mic, great video!

Clearly the DPA sounds more "balanced", more "homogeneous" talking frequencies-wise, but as you said the COS-11 is still good. I'll just add one thing : I've worked with DPAs and as you mentionned the cable is pretty thin, easier to hide but easier to break too ! Whereas the Sankens can go through wars without a scratch. A very good review overall, thank you ! :)

dpa ist the better choise. they are richer and more crisp. but more fragile as the Sanken. i used DPA's a lot but for the ruff shootings ( no time, wire and rewire a lot .... ) the Sanken is the better choise in my Opinion. If you Go for Sound ... DPA. thanks a lot for your vidios. very good Job.

@bsrobinson4 жыл бұрын
I just used some b3's today and I was very happy with the results. I like the rich tone they deliver. It makes it easy to EQ in post. Also they are very easy to hide. I've never use the DPA or sanken though, so I'll have to get some and test them out.

HI, We have sanken as well. but getting a lot on hiss when used with the sony UTX-BO3 with zoom H6. When we used the same combination with the factory sony Lavs not as much. anybody else had similar experience.
@ChrisPFuchs6 жыл бұрын
digtal awesomegroup Did you ever figure out what the cause was? I've used the same setup and didn't have a problem. I think I boosted the output from the Sony a bit to help out the H6 preamps, but either way the Sanken has a bit hotter output than the default lav that came with the Sony.

check out the voice technologies VT 500 (or 506 for hiding - highboost). in my opinion, these are the best sounding lavs out there, and the cut very good with the 416. but i have to say, i never liked sanken very much. dpa stuff is also great!

I got a used 506 and tried to wire it for the sony UWP. The wires are very hard to work with compared to Sanken. I covered to used Sankens I bought on eBay to the Sony's 1.8 jacks no problem. The VT 506 uses lacquer insulated wires so you have the burn them then solder them. But even following the wiring diagram of the VT506 and multiple tries I could never get them to work.

Thank you for your video! Good timing as I am starting to look for lav mics to go with my SK2000 and G3. I have used Sanken on productions and I am quite happy with how they sound. I like the idea of the microdot system to extend the use from just lav mics to various transmitters and even to record ambience or music. Overall I felt that the DPA was more natural sounding which I like. On my playback system it seemed as the first shout distorted slightly on the DPA and that the Sanken handled this better, would you agree?
@Dustbrigade7 жыл бұрын
I downloaded the audio of this video in my browser and I am not sure weather it is youtube or something else, but it seems as the shouting clips digitally, Here is a screenshot from the shouts in serial. imgur.com/a/IqrPl

Thanks for the video. Since I already have an investment in Sanken LAVs, I was happy with your testing. Like you stated, it's nice to have choices. I thought that for the mic placement you chose, the Sanken was the more articulate producing very intelligible dialog and as you stated, a bit bright. Where the DPA was a bit muddy to me. Both would have to be EQ'ed and processed so it's a toss up really IMHO. In your 'open air' scenario, with mic placement in the scalp area, I can imagine the DPA being more desirable, as I know the Sanken is again, a bit too bright. Depending on the talent's speaking frequencies, it can become almost harsh if not attenuated/filtered by costuming/clothing. Since 'discovering' iZotope RX a few years back, different mic characteristics (tone) is less concerning to me, as it does a great job matching tone from what is being used as a boom mic either inside or outside and my LAV choices. But what do I know, I think that the Sennheiser ME2 is one of the best sounding LAV mics anyway, so please disregard my opinion :). When I finally break down and purchase some DPA LAVs, I'll probably choose the Sanken when used under clothing, the DPA when used 'open air'. Again, thanks for this video.

Hey yeah the me2 it’s great for noisy environments sounds great hahahha but you are right they willl need some Work but all sound editors will Do that anyways regardless of the mic you use, and after that the mixers will do some eq aswell, so eqing can really fool everyone !!!

Interesting comparison! I just received a (used) DPA 4060, but with an XLR connection. The sound is quite natural and pleasant. Unfortunately, I can't compare the sound with and without the Boost, because I only received one Boost Grid. Besides, probably this reason will encourage me to return the microphone hoping to get another Lav with all the accessories. I have a question: By touching the cable, I have the impression that the slightest movement is captured. I even hear all the noise around me. The noise is not amplified but it's present. Is this all due to the fact that the DPA is a Hi-sens microphone or it's related to the connection I have (XLR) or even the Boost? Maybe going through a transmitter, the microphone will be relatively less sensitive ... or is there another reason? I hope you will answer me that will help me make my future decisions. Thank you RLFO ^^

I wanted to build an ortf set up with two 8040 for ambiences and sfx recordings, one day on set my schoeps mk41 was visible in the shot ( it was a car rig )so i decided to use the 8040 to cover that scene I liked how it sounded so now i always bring it as a backup and for small spaces its quite tiny that microphone and packs a punch, thanks for stoping by!! happy new year !
