Sanna Marin says debate on NATO membership 'will change' after Russian invasion

Finish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Thursday said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will change the debate around NATO membership within her country. #Finland #Marin #NATO
“Finland is not currently facing an immediate military threat, but it is also now clear that the debate on NATO membership in Finland will change,” Marin said, YLE News reported.
Finland has been debating for months whether the country should apply for NATO membership, with Marin saying it would require broad support for the country to move forward with an application.
Finland and Sweden, who are both not officially members of NATO, will be at a summit the alliance will host Friday.
Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, condemned Russia’s attack and President Vladimir Putin, saying “the mask has now come off and only the cold face of war is visible,” according to YLE.
Finland has around 80 citizens in Ukraine at the moment, Finish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said.
Finland is one of many countries condemning Putin’s attack on Ukraine. As tensions rose between Ukraine and Russia over the past months, debate for NATO membership in Finland increased.
Russia claims one of the reasons it attacked Ukraine is due to Western countries’ willingness to consider Ukraine for NATO membership.

Finland might not be a member of NATO but it is a member of the EU and hence if invaded by Russia, the article 42 (7) of the Treaty on the European Union would come in place. Which would mean that the EU members would have to defend Finland and since many EU members are in NATO they would probably drag the US and Canada to the war anyways.

1. Why now and not last year, 5 years ago or ANY of the dozens of years that NATO has practically begged Finland to join them.? In times of conflict and potential conflict having a ready and willing people whose patriotism would let them, despite their small population become cannon fodder in a proxy war would be priceless, as Finland's long border with Russia could now be filed with nuclear weapons and tanks far away from such inconvenient places as Germany or the United States. To what extent was this discussed at all or seen as making Finland less secure, instead of more secure when rushing towards a speedy membership in NATO? If seen as irrelevant, why would something so far reaching for Finland's future be not discussed in detail as to every possible consequence like being used as cannon fodder before the decision ti joun was made? 2. Why is there no countrywide referendum on this subject which will henceforth affect every Finn citizen for generations to come or until NATO disbands to be replaced with somthing else in 100 years, if ever at all? Don't the Finnish people need to have a direct say and open debate about something this critically important whether pro or con? Is the present leadership afraid that when 24/7 coverage of Russian brutality in Ukraine is inevitably ended that Finnish people will go back to supporting oneutrality and overwhelmingly ( like a few months ago ) reject NATO membership? 3. How long has the EU supporting leadership of Finland agreed with Brussels that Finland should join NATO? How long was this wanted by the present leaders of Finland and politicians generally, before the Russian invasion of the formerly called Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ( until 1991) occurred? Is this not a case of "not letting a bad crisis go to waste "? Opportunism or a cold, hard analysis of all the facts? Which is it? 4. By joining now what is the"opt out clause " in case a future Finnish government would ever want out of this agreement that was made as quickly as possible, with the least amount of debate possible when fear of Russia peaked because of nonstop news coverage of their invasion of a former republuc of the USSR? 5. With less countries now willing to sit on their hands and cheer on Finland from the sidelines (as they did in 1939 and 1941) isn't Finland already " not alone"if there would be an unnecessary and illogical unprovoked invasion by Russia? How exactly does NATO protect Finland by the military might of Germany and USA while altruistically seeking to not provoke Russia ? Are there guarantees that no nuclear weapons will be stationed in Finland? Ever? 6. Why are members of the Media acting like the best and perhaps most enduring neutrality established between former belligerents that has lasted through the darkest times of the Cold War is now suddenly useless? Are they scared to speak out? Done no research? Or simply don't care? Just saying ... Peace.

Now there are no reasons, including geopolitical ones, for Russia to show aggression against Finland. Russian speakers have not been persecuted in Finland, Finland has not been a historical part of Russia for many centuries, millions of Russians do not live there, Finland does not have strategically important resources or geographical points for Russia. The situation with Ukraine is exactly the opposite.

After the collapse of the USSR, a number of Western countries diligently fueled nationalists in Ukraine and in many other post-Soviet republics. After the Orange revolution in Ukraine in 2004, this influence intensified and the rag Yanukovych, who won the next election, trying to find a compromise position between the pro-Russian and pro-Western parts of society, lost control of the situation, not pleasing in fact anyone.

The "revolutionaries" began seizing power in major cities, freeing prisoners, looting military units and weapons depots, and killing policemen. They began to threaten with reprisals to dissenters who were branded "titushniki". Neo-Nazi groups and movements emerged from the underground with the encouragement of new leaders. The new government wanted to forcibly Ukrainize the Russian-speaking regions, the presence of indigenous Russians in Ukraine was not taken into account at all.
@VMet-nc6nc

The greatest resistance against the revolutionaries was provided by the Russian-speaking regions in the east of Ukraine, as well as Crimea and Sevastopol, which incurred the wrath of the neo-Nazis led by the war criminal Turchinov. The nationalist Azov battalion, Right Sector terrorists and units of the regular army of Ukraine advanced with a punitive mission against the "separatists" when the "separatists" led by Igor "Strelkov" Girkin associated themselves with the counter-revolution, and intended to liberate Kiev from the nationalists.

Russians is more than half of Crimea, Sevastopol is a completely Russian city. There is a Russian military base in Crimea. Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine within the framework of a single Soviet state. During the collapse of the USSR, Yeltsin gave Crimea to Ukraine, contrary to the opinion of the Crimeans, the new "democratic" government did not care about the opinion of the people. Moreover, according to opinion polls at that time, slightly more than half of Ukrainians did not want to separate.

I have relatives in Finland, they are half Russian, half Finnish. And even if aggression is manifested against them, I would rather advocate that the Finnish authorities expel them together with other Russians to Russia, since most migrants from the post-Soviet countries have their homeland on the territory of modern Russia (Karelia and the Leningrad Region). Finland is practically mono-ethnic. There are indigenous Karelians and Sami, but there are not many of them.

Always need USA to save them from infighting. If there is no other issue they will fight among themselves. Look how Britain left EU? Now this Ukraine Issue has "united" them. But for how long?

Still wouldn't be a bad thing for any nation in Europe to join NATO, but be out of the EU. It would be a useful buffer whilst not tying down your economy with the other nations. Full independance is not a safe place to be when one borders a nation like the USA or Russia. I myself also got plenty of problems with the EU, but not necessarily with NATO. Ukraine situation will unite them until a new issue is brought up that divides them or enough time has passed, simple as that.

It is important and a positive development that Prime Minister Marin has condemned the war crimes of Putin on behalf of the courageous nation of Finland that resisted Russia for many months in World War II. Like Finland, all nations of the world need to condemn Putin's war on Ukraine, which was inflicted without any provocation whatsoever. Russia has flaunted international law and will be held to account for leading to the deaths of thousands of innocents and brave Ukrainian armed forces. At the same time it is very disturbing and despicable that former President Trump has not condemned Putin as a war criminal and instead has praised Putin. Trump is an embarrassment to my country, the United States, and most of us Americans are appalled by Trump's acting as a pawn of war criminal Putin.

The four Estates of occupied Finland were assembled at the Diet of Porvoo on March 29, 1809 to pledge allegiance to Alexander I of Russia. Young Sanna Martin doesn't ABC of what she is talking about! Leaving the old neutral stand (Kekkonen LIne) will be a disaster for Finland! If Finland or Sweden want to join then that should be taken up in peaceful time. Not as a consequence of this nonsensical Ukraine Issue.

Yes, joining NATO itself is a thread to Russia. NATO itself created this war in Ukraine. Joinig right now NATO would mean that ..it might start really Big war in Europe really..We dont need that.

Perhaps she should ask President Niinisto his opinion, he's old enough and wise enough to know not to intimidate the bear next door. Just remember the Winter war and the consequences that followed.

@@tepaforssa681 It's infuriating. Did they think we had a good time or something? People going hungry, cities bombed, mass relocation of people having to leave their homes and belongings behind, not to mention all the people who died in the war.

Finland and Sweden joining NATO is a suicidal recipe for WW3. The best thing would be for these countries to maintain their individual neutral status and for NATO to make an agreement with the EU to extend the provisions of Article 5 for the entire EU, should an attack on any EU country occurs. This could be done as part of the discussed European Defense Initiative. In this way all non NATO EU countries will be covered from aggression, while Russia will not have to fear NATO directly reaching it's borders.

It seems that joining NATO is a shortcut for some political clowns to become super star. But I don't enjoy your show, I'm not a Finn, I don't want to be dragged into this shit, don't create a third world war!!!
