Santa Barbara's Hardest Hike: Three Peaks Loop

The Three Peaks Loop is notorious for being the hardest hike in Santa Barbara. The route to Arlington Peak, Cathedral Peak, and La Cumbre is almost completely off trail, with plenty of bushwhacking and spicy scrambling galore. We found the Three Peaks Loop to be the perfect amount of challenge and adventure, and it is really Southern California hiking at its finest!
This is the start of our Santa Barbara hiking series! We can't wait to show you all the beauty that hiking in Santa Barbara has to offer :)

Hubby (aka Mayhem) grew up in Santa Barbara, and we met there on a hike to Montecito Peak! We have hiked all over SB over the years, and the Three Peaks is one of our favorites, although I usually get confused on Arlington in one certain spot. I think I have it figured out now after all these years. Love hiking in SB so much! So much to explore. Thanks for sharing and bringing back so many great memories!

2 hours later, I finally finished watching the feature. What a great place! I was really impressed with the bouldery nature of those mountains, just like in Riverside and San Diego counties. As far as hiking in the fog... Turn your calendar back to Fall of 1966. Our scout troop travelled to the Angeles Crest. We hiked into Chilao, on the Lone Moccasin Trail. The next day, I hiked by myself back to the car. It was in the fog. I felt strong, unlike hiking in Sequoia the preceding summer when I felt miserable. The fog added to the Gestalt of the journey and gave me a sense of power and dominion. Then I got to the car, and suffered through the long car ride back to Santa Monica Canyon. I think back then we took surface streets. Great job with all the scrambling!

That's a super cool way to think about the fog and your place in it, Randy. I will for sure try that approach next time I'm fogged in! Yes the boulders were awesome -- Adam was having the time of his life climbing all around on them, and I went up quite a few as well! ❤️ --E

The quality of the rock looked insane, such a fun-looking climb! As far as fog, I can enjoy a hike in the fog because of the coolness and the mysterious feel of it all, but it’s always better to have the open views and also to be able to see the trail out in front of you or behind you, to see where you came from!
@LiveHardxLoveHard

That's exactly how we felt, Colby. It really was cooler and that helped because it was so steep and challenging, but those gorgeous views -- and being able to film them for you guys -- would have helped even more. Still, a super fun climb and the rock was absolutely perfect -- not crumbly at all, and lots of interesting character to make it grip-able and fun. ❤️

I've been wanting to do this hike a long time. I started on the first peak, Cathedral(?), but as I was by myself I started getting shaky scared, so I turned around. Previously I saw that a meetup group I know was going to do it, but the leader won't let me come. I've done Rattlesnake near big Iron several times, so I know given enough time that I will be able to do it. Really I need a patient hiking buddy or a paid guide. Bear claws are delicious -- and apple fritters! And maple old fashioned. I pretty much like all donuts. Yes that's true -- we only passed two other people on the whole route, and the best part is they were fans of the channel! Builder bars are these tasty and very light weight protein bars, whereas Pop Tarts have basically no protein but lots of simple carbohydrate (sugar). So the Pop Tarts are a great food for long, challenging efforts when your muscles might run out of glycogen. Protein bars are better for shorter hikes where you just want to eat a healthy snack. ❤️ -- A

Awesome choice. I've done a few solid trail runs and with strong elevation gains/descents on the repaired ankle. Amazing how much undergrowth there is because of all the rain in the last couple of years. Some trails are barely passable in places. Feeling ready for my next climb. This'll be on the list, but maybe something a little less bush wacky!!

That's really great to hear that your ankle's holding up! Yes we've been finding a lot of amazing trails in the SB area, so you don't need to do one this bushwacky! There's another way to get up high in the same area, called the "tunnel trail," that would make a great trail run. ❤️

Thanks Kari, those are good questions! Thankfully we didn't have to downclimb the cliff faces -- there's a nice path that winds down around the backside. The rain held off until 2 minutes after we made it to the car and then it let loose, so we got super lucky with the weather. You do need some upper body strength for these, but honestly just like rock climbing if you use your feet and legs well it's not too bad. We were only in France for a week, but did one other really fun adventure through a river canyon that we'll edit and put together for you guys next week! ❤️

ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. It is a hike in unusual landscapes, the geology of the terrain is dotted with what looks like huge pebbles deposited by giants, and the fog gives an almost mythical atmosphere lulled by the voice of ELISE. But the sun soon scatters all the clouds to let you enjoy your famous snacks. Kisses to you both. After seeing the Cumulus clouds above the ocean then rolling into the higher elevations, I would define those as low clouds and not fog, but I can see why it can be a bit confusing. The low clouds created a surreal lighting for the video in places along the trail which made everything look like I was actually there. A nice day hike with an ocean breeze....travel on !!

As for fog. Yep. It will burn off. 😅😂. The Naciemento Road. From Hunter Liggot to Ragged Point. I always take Cambria over other towns. Sand dollar beach is biggest one along coast. Those mountains up the coast are absurdly wild. Desolate. I like Andrew Molina Mile or so out to beach. Lobos loop/coves is top 50 in USA. 10 miles out of Monterey. Obviously San Simeon to Carmel section. Naciemento Road. Lots of mountains 7600. IF THE FOG EVER LIFTS THE VIEW FROM ABOVE HWY 1 incredible. Thousands of hikes. I stick with easy coast ones parks. 165 miles to get there. Only way in out is 1 Gilroy James Dean Junction Monterey

Wow.. always on the move !! I have a technical question for you guys.. .. Are you still using the Hero 10, right ? What setting do you use on the gopro for video mode (5.3k 60fps ?) , color profile (flat, natural, vibrant ? ) and sharpness (low, medium, high ? ) Your videos always look so sharp and detailed, I have been using the Hero 8 for a few years and I don't get the same clarity. Recently I have bought the Hero 12 but it looks just the same as the 8 despite the higher resolution ! What is your secret ?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback! We are still learning with our camera work as well. We are currently using the 10 with 4k/60, vibrant. I think we do sharp but I can’t be certain on that. Honestly what makes the difference for us is the editing in post on FCP. GoPro footage often needs heavy color correcting no matter what color profile you use, and depending on the conditions (super yellow rock in the area or super white snow) sometimes the post editing can take ages!

How often do you guys come across rattlesnakes while hiking in SoCal? I'm not from the area, but it's always a concern when I am hiking out that way. I saw one on Potato Chip Rock down by the lake a couple of years ago and with the way Zuma Canyon has grown up, I almost don't want to hike it anymore since you can't see where you are stepping for a small section of the hike.
@LiveHardxLoveHard

Bryan I totally understand where you're coming from on that. We've seen quite a few snakes on our hikes, and it makes me very anxious when I have to go through high grass and brush where I can't see what I'm stepping on. But I just try to remind myself that despite my deep fear of snakes even rattlers are rarely lethal to humans, and the odds of catching a snake bite are very small. --A

The reason nobody goes above Santa Barbara is those mountains are high rough and not convenient to get to. These are technically included above Santa Barbara. North is The Coast. If you want to Argue ask why Hurst Built his Castle there. Pasa Robles. Last big flat area. Beaches. Hunter Liggot is so remote not even the Army wants it. Santa Barbara area is tame compared to coastal range up the coast. It is about the drive! San Simeon is the fatal funnel. Go there your day is done. THE DRIVE. Why? Because you can cover from Santa Barbara to Monterey in a long day if road isn't buried. You can turn from the Hwy 1 up Naciemento Road. 2789 feet above ocean. 7 miles up. Fog covers ocean until noon. Often. Pinnacles National Park is the representative park. By the time you drive to it you can drive up Naciemento see Redwoods to. And rocks. San Simeon and below are dry. Er. Mediterranean.

From where do you find these “hidden” hiking locales and what criteria do you use to expend effort to conquer them?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 ай бұрын
A lot of times it starts with viewers' recommendations, Werner, and this was one of those times! One of our favorite things about this community is that people always let us know about the super hard and interesting hikes in their local areas, and then we research them online and if they look cool, which they usually do, we add them to our list! The main criteria are: is it challenging, is it interesting (in terms of terrain, and/or what's required of the climber), and is it beautiful. If it has all three of those things going for it, we will most likely do it! ❤️

Pilots must be IFR rated to fly in the clouds, because without a discernible horizon to instantly know which way is up and down they can get disoriented. I wonder if climbing in the fog can make a climber loose their balance?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 ай бұрын
That's a really interesting question! For us it's ok as far as balance because you can still see and feel the rock at your hands and feet. But it is really hard in terms of navigation, because you can't see far up ahead at all so it is really hard to figure out the right route unless there is a clear trail to follow. ❤️
