Tom was the coolest. When i was about 13 or 14 he was in Bakersfield and was skating what we called the McDonald's banks. It was a small 3' bank behind McDonalds. He hung out with us the whole day and was just down to earth and super Cool. Im 45 years old now and have never forgotten that day.

So that's why it took so long for Tom's board to come out. I met him right after that competition and he showed me his board before it came out. One thing I learned about skateboarding from him was not that he was technical.... it was that he was consistent. He would do simple tricks, solid. He was very controlled. His runs were solid. He would never remember me but I skated with him on about 5-6 different sessions. Twice in Visalia, the rest in Bakersfield with the guys from Wavelengths.

I remember a quote from Tom from a 30 year old interview: Once a skater always a skater. That kick flip wall ride 30 years ago on a bulky deck by today’s standards was insane. These kid’s today doing stuff using DIY videos from KZbin have no idea how hard it was to learn a trick and not have anyone to teach you. We rewinds vhs tapes over and over just to rewatch a part. And if your VCR didn’t have slow mo....well your screwed trying to figure stuff out. We didn’t have smooth surfaced skateparks. We had rough rugged terrain and police making us leave. We didn’t have these decks modified to the designs of spin/flip tricks like today’s skaters. We had fish tailed/bulky decks that took a lot of time to learn a trick. Learning a 360 flip back then(last trick I learned) was hard/painful yet was gratifying. Nothing was giving to us easy. We worked for it. And I wouldn’t trade my youth for anyone of today and their experiences

I always liked Tom Knox. That interview where he ollied four milk crates made my bedroom wall much nicer looking. I was never much for Santa Cruz boards, I was more into H-Street at that time. One if my friends had that firat graffic as his first board. He got it with venture trucks and cockroach wheels. Another friend of mine that ripped was a diehard Santa Cruz guy. I can only remember him riding one board that was not NHS. He had the Tom Knox black flag board and a lot of those first ever-slicks of Tom's.

Just found out that there is another tom Knox! Kind of embarrassed, in my first deck, was a late 80s, Tom Knox Santa Cruz, with pink grip! It may have had gullwing trucks, or maybe they were variflex! The wheels were crap!!! I had bought it in 1990! LOL (pretty late!) To add insult to injury, I then, got a spare pair of Indy stage sixes, on the setup! This would begin, a history of bad setups for me!
