They position the camera, light the fire, then point a dozen, one thousand watt floodlights at the fire to be sure we can see the flames. 🤣 It's just stupid with zero thought. If they'd just turn off the lights, it would look like a fire is supposed to look.

So… I picked up an English rifle made in 1840,,something. It’s a cap lock with a 40 bore. Like .478 caliber.It’s proof marked with the early British proof marks. I did some barrel bore cast’s and miked them out,,, and I’ve acquired some vintage moulds. The rifling looks its Henry barrel. Made in Shropshire, a “Park Rifle” octagonal barrens.. a gentleman’s deer rifle, pristine condition. I have a couple containers of the original “caps”, un opened from 1870 ?? Anyway this nearly 200 year old cap lock rifle is waiting for me to get the wood stove going in the barn, and cast up some projectiles. What did Santa get for me this year ? A 200 year old fine cap lock rifle, and some bullet moulds!

Strange how the old (or not so old ..... it depends which end of things you are on) works. You are there poking the old broiler with a piece of birch bark and WHAM! ...... I am back 50 odd years and watching my parents (and Grandparents ..... I said it was strange) lighting the old coal fired fairy machine. They would get it going a bit and load the coal on and whip a sheet of newspaper flat across the open fireplace. If there was a touch of heat in the chimney there would be Gods own Bellows set up and the fire would start to draw with the noise of a Dragon! Eventually the battle between heat and newspaper would be lost and with a deft swipe they would crumple the burning sheet of yesterdays finest news and cast it into the fire to see it sucked in and consumed. Not bad for a 50 odd year memory. Of course we needed those fires because we had windows you could hear the wind whistle through, even with a towel stuffed hopefully in the cracks. That would equate to windows that we would wake to find iced up on the inside ..... but if we had banked her up right and damped the chimney down correctly there would still be a few glowing coals to ignite the next one with. I do not remember having a Guzunder but even so a nighttime trip to the loo was to be put off until the last moment of desperation because it was Cold outside the bed with 5 or 6 blankets on it! I do pity those kids growing up nowadays with central heating not knowing the joys of watching the Faeries dancing on eather coal or wood and the sheer pleasure of poking the beast with a wooden stick! Happy Christmas whoever and wherever you are ..... every single one of you!
